I definitely agree that you have to choose happiness. You can argue 'oh, its easy to be happy when you have a family and job', but to me thats a lame argument. Are people saying you can only be happy if you have wealth? A marriage partner? Because you can find some pretty happy people who don't have those things. Happiness is subjective, it differs from person to person. And as far as depression goes, its called a _disorder_ for a reason. They need that extra help from friends/family/therapy...

I've been through depression, anxiety, panic attacks, counseling, suicidal family members, and all kinds of craziness... @MonkeyFunInc14 run, exercise.....do that daily routine, u will start loosing ur depression and it dosen't matter what's happening around you. Do this more and more and u will feel better about ur self....it's also physcially healthy too

Wow, people can get really sensitive over one man's opinion. XD As a person who has struggled with depression, I'm gonna say that I agree with Shay. Sure, you can't be happy all the time. Sad things happen, frustrating things happen, etc, but you can always choose to find things that will make you happy. Be with people you love, practice a hobby that you like, go crazy and do something different. Make your days worthwhile. That is all.
I honestly think Shay means that being optimistic is a choice, not exactly being "happy". When people are depressed it's not because they choose to be. But if someone's just a whiney, pessimistic bitch it's because they're choosing to be. Depression is all mental. The fact that there can be kids living in 3rd world countries who are happy with their lives means there is no excuse for people who can live comfortably not to be happy. I totally agree with you Shay!!

@SuperZ00M I know exactly how you feel. My dad died a few years ago from colon cancer and ever since then, my family hasn't been the same. They always yell at each other, and blame things on each other. We don't even have 'Family Wednesday' anymore, we are completely torn apart. At times, it does get really hard, but there has to be some times when it's all good. Even I have some good times. If you do feel down, talk to a close friend or adult and try to remember those times. I hope you can. :)

My Family never had something like "family wednesday or Sunday". It was all a mess since I was a child. But I never gave up the hope to help them fix theyr problems, but they don't want to be helped. Ask yourselves this, who wants to be depressed when you can be happy? If people have a choice wouldn't everyone want to be happy? It goes against all logic for people to choose depression/ unhappiness when they can feel good all the time. The idea that it's a choice makes it look like its people's fault if they are sad, unhappy, or can't get out of a depression. I don't think happiness is always a choice. Someone suffering from chemical depression, depression caused by an hormonal imbalance, or a severe mental illness like schizophrenia(which my sister has) can't simply choose to be happy. You can't just make a mental illness go away because you want it too. The brain is just like any other organ and sometimes things can go seriously wrong.
You're not in charge of your emotions. Quite the contrary in fact. That's how cognitive science explains it anyway, but far be it from me to try and convince a mormon of anything using science haha

@yourfairygothmother i have been diagnosed with bipolar disorder many years ago, and borderline personality disorder. so yeah i do understand that mental illness isn't a choice. however i do know that how you look at your illness is up to you. you can fight it and don't let this illness be a constant drawback on your life because i sure as hell know that i i didn't want my illness's to take control of me anymore, and believe me i was doped up on drugs for a very long time and that didn't help.

I do, honestly, believe that your outlook has a lot to do with how happy you are (My favorite quote is "Happiness is not the natural state of mankind, and is never achieved from the outside in" and I try to live by that), but sometimes, with your own mind pitted against you it's nigh impossible to choose happiness. @familyklok no you are wrong happieness is a choice. You can choose to do things that make you happy and choose how you act towards other people and kind of control who you are with. Love makes people happy, too. And then if you would take drugs you would choose to take them to make yourself happy. And if he didn't have all these fans etc he would just try to get his life done otherwise, like everyone else does. You got a crappy way of seeing things in my opinion.
Today, in my team meeting at work, we talked about this and I totally referenced this video. I suffer from depression, but getting help with therapy/anti-depressants/whatever is choosing to make yourself happy/better yourself. Another thing is that no amount of money, love or power will make you happy. It has to come from within.

@willem01 There is no "genetic obesity". There is, however, a genetic predisposition to store fat (gain weight) in a manner that exceeds the general population. I fall in this category with my particular genetic profile, yet at the same time, I have a low body fat percentage because I eat right and exercise daily. Shay may or may not fall into this category, but even if he did, his being obese has really little to do with genetics and everything to do with lifestyle. Shay is way beyond chubby.

Often optimism is just compared to idioty or dumbness but it's totally wrong this guy could be an astronaut. It's not anout ignoring all what is bad, or being unconscious it's about focusing on what is good. Thing is pessimism is in human nature because we are ALL GOING TO DIE, it's as simple as that. So when you think it's just so hard to be optimist, to focus more on the good things than the bad ones. Present can only be good. I don't hve his philosophy but i totally approve it.

There's no choice in depression, everything is normal you can have a great familly, a great jobs and great friend but suddenly one day you just feel empty. When you open your eyes the morning there's nothing to make you waking up from your bed, you finally do it because you have to do so but you are more like a zombie, you are just fucking empty. Being alone while depressiv is really horrible it's really a lot of suffering. It takes a lot of patience and help from the entourage 2heal from that.

Depression is all mental. The fact that there can be kids living in 3rd world countries who are happy with their lives means there is no excuse for people who can live comfortably not to be happy. I totally agree with you Shay!!

Hey shay, how can somebody be happy whos family is a mess. Everybody hates each other and there is no way to change that (tried many times). Whould you still say "just be happy" ? I cannot be happy when I know that my family is not happy. I bet that don't even read this comment....

@SuperZ00M I know exactly how you feel. My dad died a few years ago from colon cancer and ever since then, my family hasn't been the same. They always yell at each other, and blame things on each other. We don't even have 'Family Wednesday' anymore, we are completely torn apart. At times, it does get really hard, but there has to be some times when it's all good. Even I have some good times. If you do feel down, talk to a close friend or adult and try to remember those times. I hope you can. :)

My Family never had something like "family wednesday or Sunday". It was all a mess since I was a child. But I never gave up the hope to help them fix theyr problems, but they don't want to be helped. Ask yourselves this, who wants to be depressed when you can be happy? If people have a choice wouldn't everyone want to be happy? It goes against all logic for people to choose depression/ unhappiness when they can feel good all the time. The idea that it's a choice makes it look like its people's fault if they are sad, unhappy, or can't get out of a depression. Seriously if it is a choice we all would choose happiness.. don't kid yourselves.

I don't think happiness is always a choice. Someone suffering from chemical depression, depression caused by an hormonal imbalance, or a severe mental illness like schizophrenia(which my sister has) can't simply choose to be happy. You can't just make a mental illness go away because you want it too. The brain is just like any other organ and sometimes things can go seriously wrong.

@yourfairygothmother i have been diagnosed with bipolar disorder many years ago, and borderline personality disorder. so yeah i do understand that mental illness isn't a choice. however i do know that how you look at your illness is up to you. you can fight it and don't let this illness be a constant drawback on your life because i sure as hell know that i i didn't want my illness's to take control of me anymore, and believe me i was doped up on drugs for a very long time and that didn't help.

@beautifuledie I have Bipolar II disorder and choose to live unmedicated. I do, honestly, believe that your outlook has a lot to do with how happy you are (My favorite quote is "Happiness is not the natural state of mankind, and is never achieved from the outside in" and I try to live by that), but sometimes, with your own mind pitted against you it's nigh impossible to choose happiness. I don't disagree with Shay's philosophy, it's just his ignorant delivery. There's a reason so many are angry.

@familyklok no you are wrong happieness is a choice. You can choose to do things that make you happy and choose how you act towards other people and kind of control who you are with. Love makes people happy, too. And then if you would take drugs you would choose to take them to make yourself happy. And if he didn't have all these fans etc he would just try to get his life done otherwise, like everyone else does. You got a crappy way of seeing things in my opinion.

Today, in my team meeting at work, we talked about this and I totally referenced this video. I suffer from depression, but getting help with therapy/anti-depressants/whatever is choosing to make yourself happy/better yourself. Another thing is that no amount of money, love or power will make you happy. It has to come from within.

@willem01 There is no "genetic obesity". There is, however, a genetic predisposition to store fat (gain weight) in a manner that exceeds the general population. I fall in this category with my particular genetic profile, yet at the same time, I have a low body fat percentage because I eat right and exercise daily. Shay may or may not fall into this category, but even if he did, his being obese has really little to do with genetics and everything to do with lifestyle. Shay is way beyond chubby.

Often optimism is just compared to idioty or dumbness but it's totally wrong this guy could be an astronaut. It's not anout ignoring all what is bad, or being unconscious it's about focusing on what is good. Thing is pessimism is in human nature because we are ALL GOING TO DIE, it's as simple as that. So when you think it's just so hard to be optimist, to focus more on the good things than the bad ones. Present can only be good. I don't hve his philosophy but i totally approve it.

There's no choice in depression, everything is normal you can have a great familly, a great jobs and great friend but suddenly one day you just feel empty. When you open your eyes the morning there's nothing to make you waking up from your bed, you finally do it because you have to do so but you are more like a zombie, you are just fucking empty. Being alone while depressiv is really horrible it's really a lot of suffering. It takes a lot of patience and help from the entourage 2heal from that.

I have had problems in my life, some far too painful to mention. However, it is in the past, and there is nothing that can be done to change that. Maybe Shay's been obscenely lucky, and has had a great, happy life. Or maybe, he has gone through those "few problems," and so has a greater appreciation for the positives in his life.
