hi i tottaly agree wit all ur arguements i just wanted to know if u have any tips on getting a turtle to like u and not be aggresive cause mine seems to hate me if u could send me aa msg that would be great plz and thankyou
i have a questio idk if my turtles wanna mate or if it is dominace they are hitting maturity but i still cant tell the sex of both the turtles or eighter of them yet because they are still under 4 inches, how can i tell the difference
Females have a cloaca which is generally under the rim of the shell, and the tail is much shorter in females. As are the front toenails.
Males toenails at the front are quite longer than females ones. Often females tend to be a third of the size larger in adulthood. If they are both males you should be wary - my two are males and are adults. They nearly killed eachother.
I have two red eared sliders. At adulthood, they are very territorial and may need to be seperated if their both male.
well i know the difference between male and female but not of the terriotorial thing, cause they dont fit any discription, cause one of them has a short tail but the vent is not at the rim, and the other has darker and abit larger nails but not like omg huge so yeah they dont fight so i guessing it might be the mating... gessing..
Its hard to describe, but basically, if the tail ISNT really really stubby and small, its probably male. If the nails ARENT really really stubby and small, its probably a male. I know its hard. One of mines is definately a male and it has nails like a female - very short.
Colour, btw, has nothing to do with it.
The neck tickling can also be a sign of 'sparring' between males. Sometimes afterwards, if their adults, this can lead to vicious fights between the two of them.
well i think i have to wait there have been no figths their 4 years old and doubt theyll fight each other cause theyve lived together all that time, and there is hardly any aggression, ive only seen them fight once! idk y the small one just got up to the other and opened its mouth like to bite she/he but no hand motion, i migh think they are both males...
I dont know how old my two males are - we adopted them from a pet store that was about to otherwise 'dispose of them', shall we say. I've been a keeper of reptiles for many years, and I estimate my young male to be about 5. My older one to be between 7 and 9. I had my two seperated for some time because the younger one became very unwell, but when they were put back together the little one became very violent and kept trying to kill the bigger one. Strangely, the bigger one never, ever fought.
haha mine are like that too! not they fight but the small one is the more of the aggressive type, and the big one (he/she is only like 2 centimeter bigger maybe 3 l0l!) is always calm, when they beg the little one wont stop even after there is food in the tank! but then again they are so different! different coloring/ shell disign, and one really likes to bask and the other likes the water more foraging and wasting time relaxing
Maybe when the little one is older, I might try keeping them together again. Perhaps they become less aggressive as they age or something.
When we're talking about your turtles, are we talking about your RES's? Your video, red eared sliders on Saturday - I'm going to comment on it just now.
If you upload a video sometime of a close-up view of your turtles, from the bottom AND top, I can try my best at sexing them for you. I don't hold any promises though - they definately still appear quite young.
Kudos for using the correct eye drops though. I use those. I recommend "T-Rex Dry Turtle Formula", its a great food mix for all aquatic turtles.
ill try i think i have a vid of them close up that im working on ill post bt not sure... and thanks, yeah petco has come in handy, "T-Rex?" never heard of them do they sell it at petco? i feed mine shripms, wardley sticks and some growth balls
I dunno, we don't have a PETCO here in the UK, I just order mines through a local petshop. "T-Rex" is the brand, and the label just says "Aquatic Turtle Dry Formula across it. If you do an image search on Google you can find pictures of the tub. Its square with a blue lid.
It has all the vitamins and minerals and EVERYTHING all aquatic turtles need. Its basically a complete diet - I don't feed mines on much else other than this stuff.
haha i just googled it and the second url was petco! l0l i guess im in luck ill check it and compare to the foods i feed now, which are part tetra dried shrimp, wardley sticks and zoo med growth formula
I always thought Zoo Med Growth Formula was just for the hatchlings/young turtles, or if they have an infection/shell problem. I've never heard of wardley sticks.
I use the dried shrimp tetra stuff, but not all the time. VERY smelly. Theres literally no smell from the T-Rex stuff.
i think so but they havent finished it because when they were small (quarter size yes they were hatchlings when i got thme l0l) they didnt care or like them and they wouldnt eat them but now they love them so i dont see anything bad so ill feed them tat til it finishes and then buy some trex and this thing that enhances color
yeah high in red and yellow pigments are good for color, because mine are getting to be brownish green look cool doe but i will like their colors to be brighter u know stand out more
yeah it grows but they fish eat it and s do the turtles sometimes, because of their artifcial sun light lamp, it makes uva and uvb light i think (uvb makes heat only or one of them does...)
Did you know RES's actually manufacture their own vitamin b12? Which means they dont necessarily NEED lighting. Just a well-lit room. This is by no means to say you should keep them somewhere dark, but yeah. I've NEVER had lighting for my turtles. My room is warm, and they bask during the day when the sun shines through the window. And their quite happy like that.
i didnt know that! but their not next to a window, and that room isnt always well lit... l0l ill stick with the light but inteesting never knew that... COOL!
Sometimes they do this in a sign of competition between males - most of the time though, its a mating dance. If its to your fish, this could be just a hormonal male being a moron. Or it could be territorial - after all, you should never keep fish with a turtle unless their a food item for it to eat.
Often their just inquisitive and will do this simply to see what reaction they'll get. Mines are RES's. They'll do this, or bite at the glass when I put my finger up.
my female does the same thing. i have a video as well lol, it's kind of funny. the only thing that kind of scares me is that she does that to a baby turtle i put in the tank recently.
that depends on if they are males or females and if they are a m and a f &are they get along let them be they just wanna mate..if they dont get along and the female bites at the male he can loose his fingers or paws.(separate them at least for a few days) if they are 2 males they are trying to show dominance and want to fight. (good idea to separte)
why do in the pet shops say that they need a lamp and heat and all that but yet you see them in a cold pond or lake so im just going to get a terra\pin and put it in a bowl with cold water wot do you think will happen ? please get back to me asap
They live longer if their water is heated and they don't need to hibernate, and they need sunlight to survive (A sunlamp is an indoors replacement for it) Turtles can be pretty expensive to care for, so I wouldn't recommend you getting one unless you can afford all the equipment.
I disagree that handling RES's makes them more aggressive. I've found this to be the exact opposite with mine. I have 2 males that are 5 years old. They will literally swim onto my hand in the water, or climb up on it when they are out of the tank. If they are approached unaware, they will snap and hiss, so I don't do that.
My red ear sliders that get handled daily are very friendly and swim into my hand to get held. I also have 3 musk turtles which are generally aggressive but I handle them daily to put them into their feeding tank (I feed in separate tank so that their tank doesn't get dirty) and they are very friendly now too.
If my RES about 2 years old is really aggressive, i mean if i look at him he snaps his beak and then jumps in to the water, what should i do, is there anything i can do? oh and if a thin piece of shell one of the scutes comes off in a thin translucent piece is that shedding?
Red Eared Sliders are named sliders because of that shy behavior of sliding (usually not that gracefully) into the water when they sense danger. My older turtle sometimes snaps her mouth at me but only when I'm picking her up to move her. Sometimes she stretches out or has an itch and snaps her mouth while basking but usually not AT me. I would say that if yours is snapping at you, it's just trying to appear bigger and badder than it is. Warning you that if you get to close he'll bite.(see next)
This is normal behavior. Think if you were him, how would you feel? Make sure you're not handling your turtle any more than you need to as well. They don't like it and I've found the more you do it the crabbier they get. Also, shedding scutes and skin is normal.
@Pinkskullnxbones thank u very much! some much needed info for a 1st-time turtle/slider owner... question...how do u tell if they're a boy or girl? cuz @ the store they said my slider was a girl n we named her Rosy but im not sure...oh n another question...how much do u feed it? ive been feeding it 20 pellets twice a day...my Rosy does the same thing! ive wondered if she was ok after sliding into the water... :D also i dnt handle my turtle at ALL... only to clean the tank...
This looks very similar to the mating dance but it is in fact an aggressive gesture. It is not the mating dance. She is simply just trying to tell my finger that she is bigger and badder than my finger.
yeah does it much more with the fake turtle i have inside his tank its funny.I really like my turtle.Hey they are not slow like some people think they are i let my turtle out of his tank like about 3 times a week. And he runs all over the place hes not slow.^_^

Natural light will help this to some small degree also. But this will also mean cleaning your tank of algae all the time too, which is the down side.
