@James0022ify - Jim, the writer of both songs is P.F. Sloan who wrote many of the Grass Roots songs with Steve Barri. That would explain some of the similarity!
Logging in from Wellington, New Zealand. Great song. It charted top 10 in NZ in 1966. I have their "All Time Greatest Hits" album and I never get tired of listening to it.
I AM SO SAD THAT ROB GRILL PASS AWAY THEN I READ HIS ONLY SON PASS AWAY OF CANCER MY HEART GOES OUT TO THE GRILL FAMILY THEY HAD SOME CLASSIC SONGS REST IN PEACE WITH YOUR SON ROB.
She just moved out on the 1st and already wanting me to do stuff a boyfriend would do ... "BFJ BABEY" I told her 'BFJ?" she asked ... 'BOY FRIENDS JOB" LOL ... THEN I PLAYED THIS SONG FOR HER .... GOOD BYE .. GOOD RIDDENS.
THANKS FOR "WHERE WERE YOU WHEN I NEEDED YOU " !I'VE ALWAYS LOVED THIS SONG. IT WAS ONE OF THE FIRST SONGS I SANG WITH MY BAND IN'60'S! DO YOU PERHAPS HAVE THE KARAOKE VERSION OF IT? PLLLEEEZE!! (I SEE GOLDIE4MORE ALSO REQUESTED IT)
They did this song among other wonderful hits they had at Happy Together Tour in Dayton, OH this week-the Grassroots' music just makes you feel so good!! And, of course, they spoke about Rob at the very beginning...I'm sure I wasn't the only one there with tears starting to well-up at that moment. Great performance and a great tribute!!
The music quality of this video is just wonderful!.. One of the best I have heard here at You Tube. I was greatly saddened to learn of Rob Grill's passing. The Grass Roots were such a part of my teenage years.
Goodbye Rob...your music made the Grass Roots, the likes which will never be seen again....your music brought us all through a bad time....RIP brother
This is a pre Rob Grill et al Roots, in its infant stage with P. F. Sloan and Steve Barri doing most of the playing and singing in a pet project of theirs, along with some borrowed talent from L.A. session players of that time, the guy handling the lead vocals was neither Sloan or Grill, his name escapes me at this moment! Anyway, thanks rwells47 for the upload and the Tube for the power & space!
@redsfanstu Bill Fulton's vocals. This is the same vocal as is heard on the 45 that another YouTuber has posted. According to PF Sloan there is no version with his vocals in circulation.
For some reason, this song has been playing in my head today. Didn't even remember who sang it. Surprised that it was the Grass Roots- they must be able to put on a great show even today with so many great tunes. Is this great or what?

Such memories. The Grass Roots were awesome, but my favorite group from that era was The Cyrkle. Red Rubber Ball, Turn Down Day, How Can I Leave Her. They were special.
For the last time.... the voice on THIS most-popular version of "Where Were You" is not Rob Grill or PF Sloan ...the haunting vocal here is none other than BILL FULTON. He was the GR lead singer before Rob Grill took over.
I believe Rob Grill played on the 3rd version of this song. The Original was P.F. Sloan...the original Grass Roots was actually a band I saw in San Francisco...The Bedouins. a San Francisco group named "The Bedouins" and that band's lead vocalist was Willie Fulton. (I knew him as Bill Fulton) who is clearly heard on: Mr. Jones (Ballad Of A Thin Man) ...this band toured for months as The Grassroots....A second version of the song was released and went up the charts...then Rob Grills version
Lets get this "right" The lead singer of the Grass Roots SINGLE "Where Were You When I Needed You" ...the version that got to #28 (ABC #4029) is not PF Sloan (he's the songs co-writer and released the 1st single, which barely charted); it's also not Rob Grill (he recorded a version thats only available on GR albums), ...no, the singer you're hearing on rwells47's posting here, is "BILL FULTON "...who was GR's lead vocalist before Rob Grill. Bill does an awsum job with his haunting vocal!
@James0022ify- it's no wonder why it sounds that way Jim! P.F. Sloan is actually the lead singer on this early Grass Roots hit. P.F. Sloan is a co-writer of this song AND P.F. Sloan wrote "Eve of Destruction"! Ron
@rwells47 The song was also recorded with Rob Grill. In all, I believe the song was recorded three times with three different lineups of The Grass Roots.
@rwells47 This song was also recorded with Rob Grill. All told, I believe there were three different recordings of the song with three different lineups of The Grass Roots.

It reminds me of my ex-wife, then and now. One of our first dates was at a Grass Roots concert, and the lyrics are applicable today.
Where were you when I needed you, Dorothy? Sorry that "thing" didn't work out for you, but I have a new life now.
