  • Oh my!

  • Aqui no Brasil é diferente....

  • WHATS THE NAME OF THIS SONG?????

  • Esse samaba e meio africando ! pessoas confundei samba brasileiro ficam falando mal,so que existe muitos sambas pelo mundo , mais o samba brasileiro e o mais conhecido !

  • Great dancer! But this is nothing close to samba, not even the music THIS IS NOT SAMBA PPL!!!!

  • This is great! I just started taking ballroom lesson....You make this look soo simple!

  • Great Demo!

I like the song too :o)

What's the name & artist/band of the song?

  • I like it Monika!!

  • She sure moves very fluidly. May I have the next dance?

  • Impressive how without the man I can recognize some steps from what one day was maxixe. I totally agree that you need to formalize to preserve. But Ballroom samba was formalized essentially by european dancers. And it is usually "sold" in shows as a Brazilian thing. This is some how disrespectful with peoples culture, specially when nothing is similar, not even the music

So history, it should be called international maxixe and not international Samba.

Yes it is beautiful and fun, but not samba

  • Cubans feel the same way about rumba. Ballroom (partner dancing) evolved separately from the local dances and then started bringing on steps from local courts (think French king's court in the 16th and 17th centuries) which then picked up the flavor of the local dances but had to be highly formalized. If you watch local dancers perform the local steps, to local music, there is very little consistency in the timing, specifics of the step or lead cues, so it is very difficult to teach.

  • My apologies, I meant 1600s and 1700s, not 16th and 17th century. Ballet and all it's offshoots developed the same way. Imagine you can lose your duchy because you messed up a step. How would you tell? It would have to be formalized. That's how partner dancing and even ballet evolved. It's like a local soccer match versus the World Cup. Rules are different because they HAVE TO BE. Before you get upset, learn the history.

  • Too much arrogance here!!

  • i really can´t imagine this girl with a really Samba Batucada in Brasil hehehe

  • i think your movements are beautifu! good job :)

  • Is it weird if a dude does the hip movement like you did? Well not quite that extensive but you now...the wiggly thing :)

  • Esse samba nao e do Brasil !!!

  • isso nao eSamba

  • OMG im so sick of all these ballroom peoples!! samba is samba, strictly Brazilian music.... and u people act like we are belittling their dance, no these people dance amazingly.....sadly it's just not samba, can't you guys be creative and use your own name??

  • it's not a matter of disrespecting the origin of samba, they're just trying to explain that this ballroom samba is way different than Brazilian samba, because most people misunderstood this fact. nobody's stupid, and don't ever question one's professionalism because it's wrong. perfecting ballroom is kind of hard, you know.

  • @fyllipy Thanks

  • It is sad when people name any music samba. I do not know where she associated this to samba. If is the samename for different thing. This sounds to a African tribe soundt. I dont care how whatever specialist she is. She or whatever should to study samba. This is ridiculus.... lol Saamba de gafieira... Whatever...

  • kkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkk

  • love fluid movements and isolations :D yeah unfortuately there are 100s on youtube who don't dance and than they are experts in telling dancers what they don't do themselves! lol sad but true - we call them wanna be experts! cyber space dancers

  • why r these stupid people allowed to comment on here when they dont know what there talking about..this is great what your doing, this comes in our bronze and silver routines(HERE IN ENGLAND,HELLOOOOOO) whether it be for kids or adults....you stick to your way in brazil (, A LOT OF HIP MOVEMENT ,,GREAT, NEXT BIT PLEASE) WE LIKEOUR WAY YOU STICK WITH YOUR WAY.OR WHY DONT YOU LEARN INTERNATION LATIN..MIGHT DO YOUR COMMENTS SOME GOOD, ,we need whole bronze/silver ect routinesplease plea.......se

  • @cydneylola123 yes. In England, Poland, hell this is samba.lol I am amazed be called stupid. But Samba music isnt a African tribe sound. lmao...Isn't your way or my way....It is the only way the correct one. Sounds like you dont respect the origem of anything.

  • I used to teach ballroom samba and found the structure to be too rigid for my tastes. I am currently performing Latin fusion belly dance and couldn't be happier. You describe the technical aspects of this style well :)

  • would you please share the name of this song & its artist instead of bickering over whether this is considered samba? thanks :)

  • I don't know what the hell is this but it's not samba. I'm brazilian, don't screw up our dance, thanks.

  • What`s the name of this song?!

  • WOW!!! I like it, She is very good teacher :), I will be very happy if someone could tell me what are the names of the steps? I think that the first one is a "whisks", but I'm not sure about the last one. Thaks :)

  • Dance with a partner next time. :D

  • wow you these moves look way better than the dancing with the stars aerobic tape I got LOL.

  • i would like to say thank you.

i've been looking for just a simple video to refresh my knowledge of the step, and i found it right here.

  • This international Samba shouldn't be called Samba, it doesn't look not even a little bit like the real Samba. That looks more like a Capoeira attempt or Axé, even the beat.

  • OMG,THIS VIDEO IS HORRIBLE.this look more like salsa move 2 me. ;O

  • how come it doesn't like like the dance Carmen Miranda did? She was so graceful.

Also this doesn't look like the type the Barazilian Samba Schools do.

  • not bad..maybe

  • can anybody tell me what music/artist this is? I find it quite hypnotic. and yes I did read the comments on samba and /or not samba or samba gafieira. I love the rhythm of samba, even in this slight alteration of it. Beautiful music.....

  • whast the first song called

  • Parece salsa step!!!

  • hot!!!:P

  • It is very sad when people want to appropriate things, transforme them and keeping the same name. I am brazilian from south and it is an ......... to SAMBA. If I was from Rio where the samba come from?! I will be furius.Nothing personal, but if you decide public your dance movies and named them the way you want, you have to be open to listen and read criticism. And if many people show desappointment, you should think about. Maybe something is wrong.

  • @arajakurzeme Yes, ballroom dancers are aware that ballroom samba and authentic Brazilian samba are different. Just because the international ballroom style of samba is not like Brazilian samba does not mean it loses legitimacy as a dance form; in fact, this style of "samba" is widely studied throughout the globe as part of ballroom dancing. From Russia to the U.S.A., many dancers use exactly this style.

  • Why are people commenting about it's name? It clearly says 'Samba' and not 'Samba de grafieira'. So stop being so small-minded. The world is about sharing and bringing something new to the dancefloor.

  • something like what they did to tango...

3rd gafieira : kind of a mix of those to... you still have the feeling from samba no pé but know you can move around and then do some tricks and dance in pair...

i´m a ballroom/latin dancer and i know what i´m talking about... that is samba (not very well thaught thats a fact but...) you learn that when your starting the rythms,,,

    dont be so squared and keep an open mind about things... you´ll live happier (;

  • you assholes... do your research first... there are 3 world recongized sambas...

1st: ´samba no pé´ ... its a rythm with very few steps almost standing steady in place but very demanding...

2nd: ´ ballroom samba ´ ... its something that were made by europeans that took the feeling from brazilian people but made it more soft because it was considered some sort of slave dance or whatever... and they couldn´t dance to that... or whatever...

  • Well...first off everyone...she is doing the international and american style basics ballroom samba. She is not doing brazilian samba. More specifically, she is repeating steps called whisks and voltas. However...her technique is not that good. She has the steps correct, but her hips are not quite correct especially in correlation to her whole body. Anyway...she did an ok representation, I instruct ballroom dance and the job was ok.

  • this is not samba... is more like hindi music.

    Oh my God !!!

  • if you assholes want brazillian samba look it the fuck up!!!

  • your so fucking stupid thats not samba music and thats not samba dance...and yes im from rio de janeiro BRAZIL and the unike thing that i can say about your stupid video is.

if you dont know abouth south america dances or music, please dont do nothing

  • @pachukodeazcapo

    this is not traditional samba.

  • Only change de name of video..... because this is the controversy.

  • Monika is a great dancer.

But why is this a samba??? "International samba" looks nothing like brazilian samba and most of the time the dancers are actually dancing to salsa or some other latin beat.

Samba comes from Brasil and this international samba has no hint of the classic features, heart and soul of where its name comes from.

So why is it called samba?

  • @Jovitinha - cars coming from (invented in) europe... Therefore, threre are no american cars, no japan cars - only european cars... right? And later invented "automobiles" does'nt look like first Benz's model... etc... etc...

You probably disagree - now, try apply the same logic to the ballroom-samba/brasil samba too... :) Brasilian samba coming from brasil - ballroom samba was "invented" later...

  • @jm496 A volkswagen beetle still looks like a volkswagen beetle. It's recognizable from it's original coz it's most famous for one thing - not its engine, not its brand name but its shape. This dance could have been called anything with a Spanish name, but samba, and no one would ever thought it could remotely have anything to do with samba.

By the way, I have no qualms about Monika's talent as a dancer, it's the name of that dance I'm questioning.

  • To all brazilians This is NOT samba de gafieira!

This is International samba from International Dancesport TOTALLY DIFFERENT but still a samba

  • I am a Salsa and Samba Instructor and the steps Monica is doing in this video, including the swing; is purelu from SALSA moves, There is no a hint of Brazilian Samba in these steps....and by the way I am half-brazilian. half-cuban so I grew up with both rythms.

  • this is not samba, at least not have it here in Brazil. Every time I try to see the samba that you learn me down. Nothing to do with Brazil. Nothing to do with samba. False advertising. Word of Brazil, you are being deceived!

  • Hi, Monika! My goal is to learn ballroom style samba at some point as soon as I have some time. Thanks so much for posting videos on actual technique!

  • this is also samba created BY Brazilians! so now ur insulting ur own country. good job

  • No, this isn't samba created by Brazilians, so he wasn't insulting his country; just giving it a bad name by being a moronic dick.

  • Hello Monika :)

I am a Brazilian and have a classical and comtemporary formation of many dance styles including ballroom. I teach Brazilian Rhythms ( all types of Brazilian samba AND BALLROOM SAMBA ). So I would like to speak from All Brazilians and professional dancers that your dance is GREAT and right. Keep it up girl :)

  • Her samba is excellent. I really enjoyed it. I trained in ballroom style dance in the U.S.. I arrived in Brazil last year and discovered that Brazilian style samba is very different from international ballroom style. The styles (International and Brazilian style) are different and both are beautiful.

  • To those who think I'm a beginner.

For your information, I'm a former Polish youth champion and current US Rising Star Champion and Open Finalist in both Latin and Ballroom!!!

I think you need to check your facts first before you make any comments about someones dance instructions... For your informations (you "blinds"), those steps I'm demonstrating are just few steps which are used to dance in Bronze- "SAMBA" NDCA and ISTD Syllabus... I think I know what I'm doing!

  • You are right! They must think first before commenting and look for the history of International Samba Latin. For them it's very easy to post comments while looking the ballroom dances but i hope they will try to undergo training so that they can realize how hard and beautiful the Samba Latin. Thank you and peace to everyone!:-)

  • you are a great teacher! very good on techniques and explanations. i like all your videos. and thanks for sharing! God bless!

  • Hi, Monika!

You are doing a great job!

And, okay this is International Style. But there is something that makes all Brazilians sad when we see it (being you or anyone else dancing): it lacks the main Samba features and soul.

Well, as you are someone well known for your work, I would like to ask something: could you use more Brazilian rythms, music and footsteps? This would bring at least a bit more of our country... I am open to sugest some material for it.

and sorry, no much space to write.

  • @dancewithmonika jestes kapitalna!! :) chodzę na kurs tańca i Twoje filmiki są doskonałym uzupełnieniem! pozdrowienia z Krakowa :)

  • Comment removed

  • You can do that of course as creative human beings you are. But, please don't call this samba, a mean be respect to the peaple that originaly created and developed it in Brazil. THIS IS NOT SAMBA!!!!!!!!!!!! FULL STOP.

  • @dancewithmonika I know that this a late reply but I just want to say you are a very good dancer. I am a dancer as well and the technique and steps you are demonstrating is exactly how I was taught. :)

  • @dancewithmonika just change the name to the video Monika... that is maybe NDCA and ISTD "Samba".... but not (just) "Samba"...

As a professional that you are, you know that this is not "Samba", but "Ballroom Samba" or however you call it... then don't call the video just "samba" because when we use a seach engine to look for REAL samba, we find your "special samba" and it is not fair with people that don't know the real samba... got it?

  • @felipelopezhill - Guys, don't be angry with the name or the style.. Both come from the past where on some European dancefloor, people were told that there is a new and exciting dance called Samba and it comes from Brazil. And it was long before International style itself was organized. Now the International dancers just follow the rules of burocracies - kids grew up learning this way. However, the cultures are open to the world, and many "Internationals" go and learn the Real Samba. I do!

  • @cry4dance - ..continued..: and I do recognize the steps now, where they are coming from, and what's the real feeling for them. I enjoy it a lot. I can't change how burocracy works, but I can change how I dance Samba.

  • @dancewithmonika - You are a beautiful dancer, and devoted teacher. but competitive dance is comparative. For instance, a couple who were in front of you in top 12 in US open Latin ranked only 217 at Blackpool (out of 260). Some dance students all over the world (especially in US) take lessons with coaches who took 1-st to 12-th place at the same Blackpool. So they have a different veiw on dancing cause they have more information about it.

  • genteeeeeeeeeeee!! pelamor.. que que ela ta fazendo?? isso não é samba!! nem o ritmo nem a dança!! e ela ta se achando ainda, a professora!

  • hahahha

    this is NOT samba!!!

    somebody please help her!!

  • in Brazil, there are two types of samba. the samba of the carnival parade, and the ballroom samba ("samba de gafieira"), which are completely different.

Besides this dance not be like of the two types of samba, neither the music is samba.

    So why call it samba?

If it is not to be like the samba, find another name for this!

  • You obviously have the wrong idea about what the term "ballroom samba" means internationally.

  • That's not samba AT ALL!! Please tell Monika not to screw people teaching that... dance?

  • AAAAARG, damn people do you really never learn?????, ITS NOT BRASILIAN SAMBA, its INTERNATIONAL BALLROOM DANCESPORT SAMBA, fuck how many times does this need to be said to make you people understand, damn. Same name for diffrent thing.

  • @Raikara 05-E In other words: Samba is a lively, rhythmical dance of Brazilian origin in 2/4 time. There are two major streams of samba that differ: the modern ballroom samba and the traditional samba of Brazil. The ballroom samba has its origins in Brazil at the middle of the 20th century, more precisely 1940-50.However in Brazil the modern ballroom samba is known as Samba de Gafieira the gafieiras are the ballrooms where people dance ballroom samba (what a surprise).

  • @Raikara really? then the solution is simple: call the video "INTERNATIONAL BALLROOM DANCESPORT SAMBA Demonstration" and not just "SAMBA"

  • Comment removed

  • @Raikara no such a thing as 'brazilian samba' and 'international samba'... samba is samba. Of course this is not what you're going to see during the Carnaval or in a Pagode party, it's not quite like the Gafieira (watch?v=jj2GrLegy4I too see what i'm talking about) but... well, samba is samba. She is not doing it wrong, quite the contrary, the technique is right... but it doesn't matter what u say, the song she's dancing is not samba. And I'm not saying this as a dancer but as a musician :)

  • @tieppofer musicians and dancers have different languages when it comes to their craft. A Bolero musically and a Bolero as a dance are two completely things. As a dancer, there are different styles of dance, modern jazz and classic jazz, both are jazz dance, but different. You may be right about there being only one Samba music, but there is more than one Samba dance.

  • she is not in music!

  • Its probably a problem with youtube (audio and video out of sync). You can notice that on a lot of other dance clips, too.

  • I don't think the probelm is that she is a beginner -

I actually don't think she is - it's just something else that she is dancing.

  • nn mi sembra che vada a tempo ....

  • Gennnnnnnte isso envergonha a cultura do samba, nao chega nem a beirar o ritmo...Ridiculo....

  • I have seen some classes from Monika. She is a really good teacher and dancer! I am not questioning this. But i affirm, this dance is not based on samba. the principle of samba is the movement of your feet, not roll your waist. the movement of the waist and the butt is just a consequence of the steps. It is just one of the examples prooving that this dance is not samba.

  • She dancing not in the music. She is very beginer.....

  • This is definetly NOT samba!

Not the dance neither the music!

Look for "Samba gafieira" at youtube and you'll see that it is very different from this mecanical dance!

If this is a new dance based in samba, find another name for it.

  • actually this is samba. its the ballroom samba tho. lol the samba ur looking for is in february with the almost naked ppl lol

  • No, my friend, i am not talking about the carnaval parade samba. im talking about the original samba, that came before the parade, historically. look at the samba dance video in my favourites and you will see that this ballroom has nothing from samba, just the name.

  • What was that? Could anybody tell me, please? That was surely not Samba.

  • Ballroom Samba. Different from the Brazilian one. Inspired actually by the Brazilian one :P

  • Some people are small minded. They think they know everything about dancing. But they forget, there is more than just their world of dancing.

Next time, look as it is a different style of dancing. Appreciate it, because if we all dance like you do, then there would be no point of dancing at all.

  • u are right about that there is differend styles but, the ones who upload the video should know better and write something more than just samba, thats why the missunderstanding among few..

  • Yes, and that's why I wrote "...more than just their world ..."

Samba here in Europe looks exactly like what the demonstration video shows. So to me, the name is correct. The figure she shows is "Samba Whisk".

  • yes I agree on that too, when I see that moves I refer to salsa basic and I am too live in europe, well you are right that move is samba whisk to you, salsa basic to me and something but not samba at all to others here . one thing is for sure, if you learn that move and go to a samba party among latin people, they will probobly say : thats not samba.

  • I agree with you ;) Samba & Salsa have the same rhythm. Samba has 1 n 2, 3 n 4 counts, while has Salsa 1 2 3 5 6 7 counts. You can dance salsa on samba music and vice versa. However we do our salsa basic differently (front to back). The figure in the demonstration movie in Salsa would be the "Paloma" (if written correctly).

  • are you crazy?? samba and salsa the same rithm?? in what planet?

  • Yes I'm crazy. Salsa, Latin/Ballroom, Streetdance and Breakdance. I dance it all. However here in the Netherlands Salsa (Cuban i think) and Samba (Ballroom) have nearly the same rithm. I know Salsa have Puerto Rician/ Colombian/ LA and Cali styles aswell. They don't match Samba for sure.

  • can you send me a link where i can hear this other samba you say? all this ballroom samba dance i saw, they are not dancing with samba i know. not even looks like, so, i presume those music are not based in samba rithm. And if you don't dance in samba rithm, it cannot be called samba dance.

  • You can dance salsa to just about any latin beat. Now while I'm not that familiar with Brazilian samba music, I can tell you that salsa works pretty well with just about any ballroom samba music.

  • this is ballroom dancing--samba, n she dance quite well

  • this definatly isn't samba, even the music, maybe this is ballroom samba

  • this is not samba

  • Does anyone know the name of this song?

  • WTF is that?? im brazilian and thats definetly not samba! get outta there, looser! go learn some samba before making a stupid video and putting it in youtube! GEE!

  • how u gonna call her a loser, spelled with one s by the way. No one called u a loser because you cant spell. This is ballroom samba so she is showing a form of samba. Sum brazillian u are. Have a nice day!

  • this is not samba but a sort of ballroom dancing

  • What is this song I love it!!

  • that sounds more like bellydance and samba but you dear are lost in some moves like ballroom dance and who knows......you are completly bud buuuuuuuuuu!sorry

  • what more, there is no technique...

  • Do you hear the music Monika? There is smth like rhythm ....

    And where is your bouncing?

  • I do hear the music hun! It's just we have a problem with Sync of the video and the sound!

  • And this contract and release thing she explains in her other videos seems quite antiquated because samba has not been danced with contraction since the 80s as far as i know

  • Why says everybody that this is no 'real samba'?! There is no 'real samba'. There are just different kinds of samba.

There is cheese, but you have also different kinds of cheese. But it's still cheese.

Stop arguing if it's a samba or not.

  • Yup this is not brazilian samba. Read the tags, this is ballroom dance type of samba. You could say it's the american social dancing style.

  • In fact, it looks more like a rumba, and this music is not samba.

  • samba???? where????

  • THIS IS NOT SAMBA!!!!

  • wonderful dance!!!!!!!!!!!

  • What's the name of the song?

  • Wendy, denk je nou echt dat een danslerares niet weet hoe ze tellen moet en dat jij het beter weet? Pfft!

  • By the way... if you guys are learning samba like this... you are paying too much!!!

  • search for this video: Carlinhos de Jesus - A Cara do Rio

    because THIS IS REAL SAMBA.

  • hey... and this is not bad neither: Samba no pe (solo) demo Claudio Gomes

    I'm brazilian. Trust me.

  • tHEY DON'T HAVE FAT BOOTY OK..ITS CALL THICKNESS get it right...thickness wat white females don't have,, and dats why u think they fat

  • The count for samba is:

one, a two, three and four, five and six, seven and eight.. she uses the wrong count, what looks like she is not in the samba rythm..

  • you are absolutely right wendy! it soemhow disturbs me to see this... really!

  • @wendybosch: In ballroom samba the foot rhythm is a little bit off the regular ,,1 and 2" way of counting. You also dance 3/4 and 1/4 of the beat. Only the bouncing action is always on "1", "and" or "2" as far as i know. It's extremely complicated, that's why it's possible that she is sometimes off beat (rarely). But I'm wondering abouther voltas. I learned them in a different way with bounce and hip rotation instead of just bouncing.

  • because voltas should has bounce and hip rotation ...

  • right!! ballroom samba foot and knee count is: &A1-&A2. &=1/2 of "one" or "two". A=1/2 of &. on '&' you lock the knee, on 'A' move the foot, on '1' or '2' load the knee (bend it in bounce). Monica seems not to be 'pronouncing' the "&", confusing it with 'A'. looks like going ahead of rhythm.

  • WTF are yiu talking about guys? THIS IS ABSOLUTELY SAMBA! I've learned the same steps! Exactly the same and it was samba!

  • Absolutely SAMBA! I recognize the steps from my own lessons a couple of years ago.

  • its a samba!!!

  • does anyone know the count on this? Seems as if she anticipates the downbeat, but perhaps the first step is on "and?"

  • Where can I find this song? Please help!! Thanx
