Not the Smothers Brothers appearance. This is for french TV, recorded in December 1967, at Revolution Club in London, alongside Tales of Brave Ulysses and Spoonfull.
@cbblazer too bad the camera man blew the shot.. never saw a note of the solo only the back of the neck.. great video otherwise..saw cream reunion MSG.. awesome..
Three guys, a guitar, a bass and a drum kit. Guitars plugged directly into amps, no light show, no swirling airborne drum kit. No auto tune or back up singers just massive talent with minimum technology.
In 1992,at the now defunct"the Ritz" in Roseville Michigan.I had the awesome opportunity to see old man Ginger Baker playing drums for the little known but bad-ass"Masters of Reality". The funny part was, they had chicken wire in front of the stage.Old Ginger beat that drum kit like it owed him money. Also saw Robin Trower there, never heard such a depressing(but awesome)version of"Bridge of Sighs" .I wanted to shoot heroin after hearing it live.
Cream what a great band. you had Ginger Baker Pounding on the drums Eric Clapton playing some killer riffs and Jack Bruce Playing some tight bass. They should have stayed together longer and made some more great music.
baker just hangs his mouth open because it lessens the tinitus (ear ringing) pain caused by bruce's amp. he's not that much of a psycho. get all the baker and bruce footage you can, neither one of them will be alive in 5 years.
I didn't read all the posts, but this is NOT FROM SMOTHERS BROTHERS! That live clip has Jack and Eric facing large mirrors with their backs to the audience. Ginger is in the middle and faces the audience.. This is a great clip tho! And Eric played the guitar line with double notes during the verses on the Smothers Brothers clip.. (the audio is on the CREAM box set)
actually jimi needed time to do that, he only started to be the better one after cream stopped, his 67 early 68 live shows are not freed of the studio solos, which hold him back, and without claptons change to fender who knows how good clapton would have been in the 70s with a les paul or sg.
Who considers Eric Clapton the father of guitar?? He is amazing and obviously one of the greatest guitar players that have ever lived. However he learned how to play by watching American jazz and blues guitarists....
@666frankiller Eric Clapton is on lead guitar, Jack Bruce on bass guitar, and the out-of-his-stoned-mind, Ginger Baker is on the drums. I saw them in 1967 at the Grande Ballroom in Detroit and them were great!.. The roadies had to nail Bakers drum set to the floor because he played so violently.
@bze2nlz4 I hope you realize your "friend" bze2nlz4 (chris)is a very known PEDOPHILE on the tube here, maybe you should have investigated more before befriending "it". Have a good day now, Yara. ;o)
All in Cream were doing things with improvisation that most bands of the time couldn't touch & Ginger Baker did things others COULDN'T do. Actually I think there are more technically good musicians now but with less individual creativity. You'd have to know what most guitarists were doing at the time to know how great Clapton was.Camera on drummer during guitar solo only tells you how stupid the cameraman was but w/ Cream all of them improvised during a solo.
Some of you realize that one should look at this in the context of the time 1967 ish and some are only thinking of current standards. At the time there were basically 4 or 5 guitarists that were thought of as the 'cream of the crop' , Jimi Hendrix, Jimmy Page, Jeff Beck, Eric Clapton and maybe Alvin Lee (of 10 Years After) most everyone else was thought to be lesser (I'm sure people will add Frank Zappa or other more obscure guys to the top tier but if so they were'nt as widely known as those 5)
@originalwolfboy Keep your sexual fantasies to yourself.Eric clapton is nothing special,at all.a good guitarist yeah,but basically a follower,not a leader,not an innovator,just a translator thats all...
@CJbass420 Yes that's Jack Bruce and most assuredly that is NOT a cigarette! LOL The camera DOES show you Jack Bruce's fingerings though not Claptons (dammit!) Ginger Baker is the shit, man...he's lovin' it :D
@CJbass420 Dude... baked to a crispy crunch indeed! And loving every minute of it. Dont you just love it when Bruce and Clapton sing together? I think that both voices are amongst the most identifiable in rock and roll.
@wildh0rse yeah i prefer jakcs voice but they go to together like a bread and butter, all thre of these guys do they're three of the most musically talented human beings on the face of the earth and i i wish i could just watch them jam even if for just a few minutes its would be amazing and a half. i also want lessons from jack for bass and vocals.
@CJbass420 Read about Jack on Wikipedia... he is supposedly considered not just great, but one of the GREATEST rock/jazz/blues bass players of all time. Oh and I re-read your original comment lolol yeah I did know the fur hat was on Jack (it looks soooo cool on him, even in 2010, no?)
I wish every 15 year old would watch this video once. They would quickly realize that the current state of popular music is a disgrace. This was, AND IS, what innovation and musical creativity is all about.
@Sincopare I know right! Us guitar players and onlookers need to see the badass solo's of the Clapton, there's just not very many even on tales of brave ulysses they don't film the solo! One of the most epic wah wah solo's to date in my book too! We all love Ginger but fuck filmin' his high herione usin' ass, Clapton! Every Zeppelin vid I watch the camera's film every one equaly and zoom in nice an close on Jimmy Page's solo's when he doesn't turn his back on them. True statement thow man.
@Nigel1792 come on! Guitarists get all the love all the time. Let us bassists have some glory for a bit! It's tough to film a band like this when you have 3 phenominal, gifted musicians. No matter what, you miss one of them doing something amazing.
@montereypopfestiva67 Your right this is for you guys and I respect your comment. Don't get me wrong thow I love the bass and drums but they could have shown a little more of Clapton on some of his best solo's, what they needed was at least two camera men filming everyone that would have been great, but yeah your right man, bassist's and drums don't get enough credit and they are the foundation of the band, more bass pplayers need to come up with stuff thow so it will be more evened out ya know?
@Nigel1792 haha I was just teasing. People with no knowledge of music think guitar solos are what defines a great gutiarist and musician. They don't care about bass and drums. Clapton could tear the neck apart, and he did, but he proved throuought his career that just because you can doesnt mean you need to. I agre with you, it would have been nice to see more of Clapton.I would have loved to see 3 cameras and a 3 way split screen. You wouldnt miss a thing. The world needs more Cream!
@Nigel1792 I'm not implying you dont know music or are someone I am criticizing, so dont take that the wrong way. I'm just saying that your average person doesnt pay attention to drums or bass anymore because they dont see them as essential. thats why people need to see more of this old stuff, where drums and bass are not only amazing, but showcased. (The Who, Zeppelin, Cream, etc)
@montereypopfestiva67 I agree with everything you said 100% man it's the trith people don't give a flyin' flippin' fuck about music anymore or at least most people, at least there are people like me and you out there who know what good music is and cherish it :)
@VictorRechnageL For real man from a young a very ealry age music had a big effect on me, unlike most kids I try to deciffer the lyrics to find out the true meaning behind a song or what it means to me, music is my everything and I'm happy to share my thoughts and feelings on what it's becoming and what music is, you have some valid and very good points I agree with you completely.
What I'm saying is not, that Jimmy was a better musician, just saying that he got a lot, lot more time on the camera, whereas Jones was almost never filmed.
@VictorRechnageL I don't think the trouble is with my ability to read, but your ability to properly articulate points using text. There's no point in the post you made that specifies that you mean camera time.
@RastafariPoet agreed... they also influence eachother, you can tell in Cream's 3rd album in uses of the Hendrix dominant 7#9 and arpeggios he throws down... SICK. and hendrix used to play cream songs live. such as this one
My mates band supported BBM Baker ,Bruce and Moore ,man they were awful that night ,Baker tried to walk off stage half way through white room lol, but love cream ,was just dissapointed on the night
I don't see a need to argue about anything. The groups, you and wolverine mention are ALL at the tops of many 60's favorites list. I don't see a need for anyone to be critical of any of them.
Even stevens I'd say. But, I'm guessing you're an American: remember that the Jimi Hendrix Experience were 2/3 British; and Mr Hendrix's talent was only recognised for what it was when, as an unknown, he came over to Swinging London.
The thing is though it's all good to me: Cream, Hendrix, Doors, CCR, Airplane, The Stones & The Who. Don't matter what side of the Atlantic they were from as they were all the dog's bollocks, during Rock's golden age.
This Disraeli Gears-era stuff gives me chills. I like Clapton with John Mayall's Bluesbreakers, but Cream was something else. Cream wouldn't have been jack without Jack Bruce--what a great bassist, with a soulful voice--and Ginger Baker. Fantastic stuff.
Some of you criticize this but you dont realize how inovative this was for the time.I will say this, the quaity of rock music nowdays is pathetic. There were so many great musicians back then.
@akbill2 For the time? This song is still innovative by todays standards! One of my favourite features are the rests in the chorus, The pauses in between the next chords. Adds so much more depth to music! Very under used by artists of today.
@akbill2 There are many great rock muscians today, the only problem ut either A: They arnt recording anymore or B: They arnt famouse and cant get out of clubs cause of crap "artists" are taking up the limelight
@maximusrvb You realize you spelled realized completely incorrect? That's factual. And you, in saying I am incorrect, are a fool because what I said is subjective. Also, you're a jackass for giving Eric Clapton alone so much credit. They're a BAND. Each member was just as important as the next, but you'll probably never understand that.
@cheesebowls Perhaps if I lived in America with morons like you who believe the entire world strives to live as the great Americans do I would spell 'realise' as 'realize'. Eric Clapton is considered the father of guitar how can you argue with that? They all complement each other but saying the drummer makes the band is like saying you can run a v6 with 2 spark plugs.
You're really going to criticize a whole nation? I know the United States has some problems, but don't act like we're all the same. I'm not saying the drummer made the band, I was saying they all worked together so harmoniously. So, fuck youuuu haha.
So has anyone else noticed that Eric is tuned down a half step in all the videos that take place in this theatre? I didn't know he tuned down ever until I just tried jamming to it.
Zappa, is the shit. But is he better than Clapton? I really cannot make the decision. Although, I can say Zappa was smarter, and a greater visionary. Zappa was as smart as Einstein, and I'm really pissed how people now overlook him in classic rock. I personally think he was one of the greatest composers ever, his music mixed rock and Jazz, and it was AMAZING!!!! R.I.P Zappa, BTW I just say his son Dweezil Zappa play a concert, quite amazing.
Might as well end this whole drummer conflict, Danny Carrey? really? John Bonham I can understand, but seriously? Keith Moon, Neil Peart. Enough said.
LanceVsWild: OR Here's another end to it, maybe we can all agree that people have different Idea about what the "Best" drummer is, and coming to that conclusion, that not one person that anyone says is right or wrong, because no one's opinion can be wrong.
@bassgroove21 who gives a damn what he looks like?its not a beauty contest, this is the great Ginger Baker, you get a drummer like that behind you as a musician, its just heaven, believe me...he fucking swings man, just look at his technique..
@bassgroove21 Thank you for proving my point. p.s.- "Through"= Throo or thru. If you want to THROW a ball, it's spelled like this T- H-R-O-W. Dumbass.
totally awesome!

I don't see a need to argue about anything. The groups, you and wolverine mention are ALL at the tops of many 60's favorites list. I don't see a need for anyone to be critical of any of them.

Jack Bruce wrote the song. He sings the song. The cream of Cream is Jack.

Correction (wolverine37x): Cream were 3/3 British

the album version is poor compared to this, thanx.
hendrix took stuff from cream its in his book he loved em.

Don't matter what side of the Atlantic they were from as they were all the dog's bollocks, during Rock's golden age.
wolverine37x in reply to TTmaniax (Show the comment) 2 years ago 2
Hendrix was awesome, but he cant hold a candle to Cream
emonster2001 in reply to TTmaniax (Show the comment) 2 years ago 2

CREAMBLUES1968 2 years ago
This Disraeli Gears-era stuff gives me chills. I like Clapton with John Mayall's Bluesbreakers, but Cream was something else. Cream wouldn't have been jack without Jack Bruce--what a great bassist, with a soulful voice--and Ginger Baker. Fantastic stuff.
morgmagg 2 years ago 2
also...this is the speed of the original song. They jacked up the speed over the years for the new generation because everything sped up.

Oh Jack Bruce. You sure could sing.

This isn't the Smothers Brothers show - it's at the Revolution Club in London - without an audience.
Why oh why did so much of Cream's live footage have to be so badly filmed? :-(
fuzzface100 2 years ago 2
clapton yes, hendrix can never be overrated, guitarists still find it near impossible to match his standards and that was 50 years ago or whatever
tiddlywinks98712 in reply to Neptuneaus (Show the comment) 2 years ago
Some of you criticize this but you dont realize how inovative this was for the time.I will say this, the quaity of rock music nowdays is pathetic. There were so many great musicians back then.
akbill2 2 years ago 37
@akbill2 I agree, Cream ruled, and Zeppelin took it to the next level. great.
metalfiend124 in reply to akbill2 (Show the comment) 1 year ago
@akbill2 For the time? This song is still innovative by todays standards! One of my favourite features are the rests in the chorus, The pauses in between the next chords. Adds so much more depth to music! Very under used by artists of today.
LowEndDream in reply to akbill2 (Show the comment) 1 year ago
@akbill2 There are many great rock muscians today, the only problem ut either A: They arnt recording anymore or B: They arnt famouse and cant get out of clubs cause of crap "artists" are taking up the limelight
aaronaaronjarvis in reply to akbill2 (Show the comment) 1 year ago
@akbill2 Criticize? I would have to say that 129 likes to 0 dislikes is pretty fucking good. This is a great performance.

I feel as though the drummer set the stage for these guys. Like without him, they wouldn't be near as great of a band.

@cheesebowls if any one of them wernt in the band it wouldnt be near as good as they are
thedirtybubble2 in reply to cheesebowls (Show the comment) 1 year ago
@cheesebowls You realise Eric Clapton was in this band right. You realise he is considered the father of guitar. You sir are incorrect.
maximusrvb in reply to cheesebowls (Show the comment) 1 year ago
@maximusrvb You realize you spelled realized completely incorrect? That's factual. And you, in saying I am incorrect, are a fool because what I said is subjective. Also, you're a jackass for giving Eric Clapton alone so much credit. They're a BAND. Each member was just as important as the next, but you'll probably never understand that.
cheesebowls in reply to maximusrvb (Show the comment) 1 year ago
@cheesebowls Perhaps if I lived in America with morons like you who believe the entire world strives to live as the great Americans do I would spell 'realise' as 'realize'. Eric Clapton is considered the father of guitar how can you argue with that? They all complement each other but saying the drummer makes the band is like saying you can run a v6 with 2 spark plugs.
maximusrvb in reply to cheesebowls (Show the comment) 1 year ago
You're really going to criticize a whole nation? I know the United States has some problems, but don't act like we're all the same. I'm not saying the drummer made the band, I was saying they all worked together so harmoniously. So, fuck youuuu haha.
cheesebowls in reply to maximusrvb (Show the comment) 1 year ago

So has anyone else noticed that Eric is tuned down a half step in all the videos that take place in this theatre? I didn't know he tuned down ever until I just tried jamming to it.
musclecarfanatic 2 years ago
Don't think he is tuned down dude. The video transfer of these clips was done at the wrong speed. It should be about 4% faster than this.
fuzzface100 in reply to musclecarfanatic (Show the comment) 2 years ago

LanceVsWild 2 years ago
LanceVsWild: OR Here's another end to it, maybe we can all agree that people have different Idea about what the "Best" drummer is, and coming to that conclusion, that not one person that anyone says is right or wrong, because no one's opinion can be wrong.

bassgroove21 in reply to aliceborealis (Show the comment) 1 year ago
@bassgroove21 Thank you for proving my point. p.s.- "Through"= Throo or thru. If you want to THROW a ball, it's spelled like this T- H-R-O-W. Dumbass.
