The most meaningful reason they changed sound from 1991, actually was that they were afraid of being marked as "Sell-outs", and also that the thrash movement faded away slowly in the 90's, and for that, Metallica had to move away from thrash so they wouldn't fade away too. Can't blame them, the Black Album became a HUGE accomplishment.

IMO pretty much all of these newly released songs trump the ones they released for the album... not sure why they didn't release these at first... would have been great touring songs. I hope they don't stick with Rick though, they need to find a producer that knows how to mix their albums. If you listen to their first albums they sounded epic because James' vocals weren't quite as loud and the drums/vocals had small amounts of reverb on them on many songs. Rubin's approach is fuzzy and distorted

@CarlsonsRaidersUSMC if you knew anything about composition or music in general you'd know that the black album is not shit. each song has an idea that's proliferated throughout the song and follows the flow of the music without loosing it in complexities. their earlier stuff does the same thing and is even more complex. this new stuff doesn't seem to flow quite as well. the complexities seem to be placed simply for complexities sake and the idea tends to get lost at certain points.

My Jazz band teacher bragged about how Kirk Hammet used very well put together Jazzy passages in the Black Album, In terms of skill they rank as one of the best thrash bands, bands like exodus are heavy but aren't as skilled as Metallica.
