why hasnt this video got a million hits? gatton, mason and scotty anderson have got to be the most underrated players out there, no matter what style of guitar you love.
His right-hand pick and finger technique is simply amazing..... the indepedence between this fingers and how he can execute so many different ideas all at once. And so creative.... just mind-blowing.
And Rolling Stone Magazine named him 63rd out of the top 100 Guitarists of All Time. It would take 62 guitarists to play that much if they all played at the same time!
@GeorgiaBoy1961 Thank You! I've been saying that for decades! Rolling Stone magazine, historically, is nothing but a hippie/leftist, self-appointed "authority" on popular music. The idiots there insist on rating guitarists in some type of order that they think is best, with no regard to genre or differing techniques. How can anyone in their right mind compare Wes Montgomery to Chet Atkins? There are guitarists out there today, like Johnny Hiland, that can blow their favorite away in 2 seconds...
Take at look at his fingerboard between 1.34 and 1.40 and then think of all those other 'great' guitarists who just have isolated patches of wear !!! Wow!
@flinx649 Right! I feel the same about DG and the other great Tele giant, Roy Buchanan --- such a loss especially in the ways they both chose to end their days.
Folks, you have to have a natural gift to play like this. And the ones of us, like me, who didn't get it, will always stand in awe at how easily Danny makes it look. Infreaking incredible. RIP Danny, the world and guitar junkies lost another great musician.
It amazes me the way he had such good aspects of his playing, not only his hybrid picking and chickin picking, his chord vocabulary and distinctive voicings stuns me everytime.
As for the gig, I sat (with my first wife) at the table directly in front and at the center of the stage so I could be as close to that energy as possible and try to learn something. What I learned was that the music he communicated was more effective than any words. He took me through every conceivable emotion that night. There were moments I laughed, moments I had to wipe the moisture from my eyes, moments I felt so deeply in love with my wife..... and that only vaguely scratches the surface.
I was in a US Army school at Fort Eustis Va when I found out Danny was playing at a little bar call the Jewish Mother in Virginia Beach. I arrived early to the bar and got to watch the soundcheck. I had my Tele in the trunk of my car, and asked one of the bandmembers (I don't recall who) if Danny would mind signing my guitar. They were very friendly folks, and Danny was gracious enough to accomodate me right after the soundcheck. This was about two months before he left us.
may be a stupid question, but is his fretboard black, due to all the use it went through or a combination of that and spilled beer and other substances on to the fretboard? Either way, amazing guitar, and an incredible player, that went way before his time...God Bless and RIP Mr. Gatton
@chase1410 -Your first guess is the correct one.It is a Maple board so worn it looks like Rosewood.
It's interesting to note that usually one will notice patches of wear around the middle of the fret board and closer to the headstock but given Danny's singular mastery of the instrument the wear is evenly dispersed along the entire neck, illustrating his technique and knowledge of the whole guitar.
@bluesborn Thank you! Noticing all the significant and evenly disperserd wear is quite amazing..It amazing to see how effortlessly he moves along the fretboard, never missing a note....What a talented guy....
You know what's not funny? I know lots of decent muso's, mostly guitarists but they don't seem to have heard of Mr Gatton.. WTF is that about.? I have Rhythm master for those how are interested but don't know how to upload.....
@flinx649: A good friend of mine - an absolute authority on Danny - and I were fortunate enough to see Albert Lee, Vince Gill, Ricky Skaggs and James Burton at a club in Chicago. We met Vince, who is a very nice man, and asked him about Danny, and he got real quiet and then talked about how no one could touch him in terms of what he could do with a guitar in his hands. The best players - the very top guys - still admire and respect Danny's playing a great deal. Gone but not forgotten.
@flinx649 Danny W. Gatton. The "W" stands for "Wipe the floor with you". Danny was and still is the best. I don't think there will be another. SRV clones are all over the place, but nobody has tried to be a DWG clone (can't be done), or Jeff Beck clone (can't be done) I'm glad I have great taste in guitar players, it shine through when I'm talking tone. any 3rd grader can play rock guitar. I feel sorry for those guys who are 50+ and STILL play heavy metal. they are stuck in highschool
TeleMaster -- Danny Gatton just floors me everytime I hear him play. What a loss, feels like he never got close to get the recognition he deserved, he was a true giant.
@twixttime Poor guy killed himself after years of suffering from depression. I true guitar legend and genius who could outplay anyone - Clapton, Beck, Hendrix, etc.
I can listen to his music all day long. I love metal the most, but man Danny is so special. Genius, one of the best guitar players ever.
