I don't see any disrespect for GL, I'd be honored to see him in concert. If it were quiet I'd think something is wrong. That's people enjoying his ledgendary music. He's not the voice he once was, but none aren't at his age. Let's be happy he's still out there touring and producing music at the age of 70 plus. I only hope I get the chance to see him live.
I agree with many of the comments. This song is a "Legendary Love Song" ,written by a man who almost died. Most of this audience was not alive when he originally recorded this song in 1971. Give Gord a break. He might not be around too long. Appreciate the "beauty" of his music, and shut up.
Took both of my Sons to see this living legend ...hes in his 70's but is still the greatest singer/song writer our time has ever seen... go Gord!...you are the greatest!
From "I" and "you"--to "we". My goodness what wisdom comes from age? Anyone who is lost in a relationship should listen to this song. The depth of it is fathomless as it is timeless.
Damn audience!!! OMG,this brought a tear to my ear to see him, reminding me that he is not the only one to grow old, we all do. And I don´t know where we went wrong, but the feeling´s gone - what a line.....
@sigmundfloyder saw him tonight in winnipeg. it was great, he sang all his classics. he was quite funny too!! he said he is now 73, more power to him. have fun, you'll enjoy the whole night.
why do audience members feel the need to "whistle' that god damn shrieking, sharp, ear-deafening sound, while this legend is attempting to play this quiet, serene beautiful song? idiots........ Gordon appeared a bit distracted by such an interruption. fuck. are people so stupid? 'he's trying to intimate the song to you. this isn't a fuckin' Nazareth show, morons.
@drumdude46 relax dude..they're just appreciating a great legend.Nazareth??? who the fuck listens to them?? Except for 1970's left over dudes with Suzi Quatro hairdo's,1979 camaros with Cragers, and no clue that, that era is over.
@littlefuzzer you got a bit 'to the left' of my point, but..Ok. anyway, 'fuzzer'..i only used the "Nazareth" referrence to illustrate the "Loud, obnoxious" whistling and ear-shattering "Whooooo's...that basically were unecessary here, during a quiter, heart-felt 'hush' moment being engineered by Gordon. as for "Nazareth"..i actually dig them. but yeah, a band from the past. still, i don't like to label things from the past as necessarily, "Passe' old can be good too. :)
@littlefuzzer - I listen to Naz, hence our pic in front of their bus. I also love Gordon Lightfoot and have seen both three different times, cuz we love their music and we lived it, as well as the new music and none of it will ever be over, until we pass away...just sayin'...
i went to college in the 80's. Everyone loved the Car's, Eddie Money and so many other bands that I thought never compared to GL. He was such a romantic and different voice of the 80's and no one ever compared to the songs he published. I'm so glad for Utube and the opportunity to hear him now.
Gordons truly amazing! His talent and song writing talent has stood the test of time. You can spot a Gordon Lightfoot song quickly. It stands out . Excellent performance.
I must really thank you for sharing this video. You guys are so lucky to be able to watch him LIVE. I am from Malaysia and I must thank the world of Internet and You Tube. I grew up listening to this great singer and his songs. It really bring tears to me when I see him old and I forgotten I am turning 59 this December 2011, lol...
He looks as hard as the life he lived but there is no mistaking the voice. Damn awesome. Moving. Probably a small venue, that's why the noisy crowd is a little off-putting. A legend in my mind, no less.
the behavior of the crowd is what you get at all concerts now a days...why???...because unlike when I was young, the people can't and don't smoke pot...BUT they sure do sell alcohol at the shows...so now when I go to shows like this there are DRUNK MORONS....this is weed music...not drinking music....what do you think made the 70's mellow???
haggard? he looks great for his age and after recovering from his health issues--and the whisling and applause during the song is called having fun- lighten up- he smiles as if to appreciate it -
One of the great ballads of all time ... I love this song.
I saw him perform live about 10 years ago and, sadly, he looked haggard ... as if he'd been drinking. In this video, he looks pretty bad, too. But, his songs (I was in college when he was really popular) are some of the best. I wish him well and hope he has his health.
About the whisling? I know what you mean, but I truly believe that its just their way of letting Gordon know there with him and loving every precious moment,,,
"...the ending's just too hard to take.........just can't get it back''. He closes his eyes like no one knows this better (and not just about the girl) than he who wrote it.
just watched 3 live performances by gordon lightfoot, 69', 74', and this one, 2009...watch time do it's thing...you see the artist grow old, fade, but the song, like his voice, remains the same...something worth while being said and a wonderful voice to say it....god i'm going to miss life! i don't care if we'll all be heaven together for ever and ever...i love life!!!
@ricrefrat WOW! your last sentance just hammers me right in the heart. Well said. For i will too miss life. I love life also! At 50 now i can see that the journey is coming to an end. It was a great ride. Although it is not over yet i cherish every single day.
@ricrefrat Really great comment, I was recently diagnosed with a medical condition that is VERY rare, may or may not be fatal, but will shorten things up. It's amazing how much more you look back and appreciate everything-NO REGRETS!
@ricrefratLife is short this time, maybe 80 years or so. Don't forget about the meek, that will inherit the earth and reside upon it forever and ever.
It is so sad to think this type of music will never be seen or heard again. Gordon is a legend. Today's music is shameful. Long live Gordon Lightfoot!!
Hopefully this type of music will go in Ron Sexsmith another Canadian - please check out Love shines - He has a new cd out - Gordon Lightfoot rates him too - see bbc iplayer bbc4 - he went to see Ron play live - you see him on the documentary :)
It's not sad, it's just sweet and natural to see him grow old. It's so special but it's all so real. This is the greatest song ever written, a real anthem for humanity.
Great recording, but I really wish people didn't whistle and cheer during a song... Makes the crowd seem low brow and is disrespectful to such a cherished Canadian treasure.
What a great singer. Really love the music of Gordon Lightfoot. He's a proud Canadian, just like myself and millions of others. Love Gordon's music, love Canada.
