I did this to my right ankle and was out for 2 months, then went back to footie and did my left, ive been out about 3 months and its slowly getting better, im 40 now so i think ill not bother with surgery :( Its a horrible injury as its so slow to repair and you go back to playing too soon too easy.
Ruptured my Achilles in December 2009, my advice to anybody would be to go with surgery, and afterwards be very very strict with yourself in terms of Physio, I did my own physio 7 days a week, had my cast off on the 22nd January 2010(wed) and was walking (with a big limp) a week later, it is not a nice injury but think od it this way... you will come back stronger, Peace and Love Dudes.
poor sod....I feel his pain. I ruptured mine a few years ago. Though I'm back to normal now, there is still discomfort now and again.....wouldnt wish this on anyone
@Bandosdroppleasesme I actually didn't know that. Would casting it (and probably PT too) have as well an effect as surgery? Or it would but it would take longer?
@starplaya09 I believe that having surgerey will speed up the process, rather then just letting your body deal with it by its self, however if you decide not to have surgerey it can leave the damaged achillies vulnerable to future injuries in that area ( after the cast has been taking off obviously).
i was told non surgery with the cast would involve a full legged cast for 9 months...the surgery is a lot quicker and for me personally its been two months since i tore mine and im walking in my boot already. surgerys the way to go for sure
I just tested myself and I test positive for this. I went to the er at Palomar hospital, and waited and never saw a doctor. They took my vitals and brought me crutches in the waiting room and sent me home. I have lost several valuable days and now I am freaking out that they did not even touch my leg at all or anything and sent me home, and now I could be disabled.
How in the world did you preform this on yourself and what makes you think you will be disabled? Are you in pain? Have you had an accident?? They didn't look at your leg because you are probably wasting their time as well as your own.
If the tendon is ruptured (severed) then the two options are surgery to repair it or isolation using a cast with the toes pointed downward, the tendon will grow back together this way, in about 6-8 weeks. Surgery ensures alignment and lessens the chance of re-injury.
I just went through all this and am now hoping to be realeased tomorrow by my surgeon for PT. Ice is the key to pain and healing. Mine was completly severed and was stitched. I am now moving it a lot and am excited about walking soon.

This test isn't fool-proof. I damaged my Achilles playing basketball. This test was administered and my foot moved. 8 weeks later an MRI revealed a 95% tear. I was in surgery a week later. The surgery & rehabilitation were much more difficult because of the delayed diagnosis.
Did you experience muscle atrophy in your calf? B/c is was in a boot for so long, my left calf is noticeably smaller than my right. Any suggestions for building my left calf?
I had a boot on for 8 weeks once, not from an achilles tear though, but my left calf caught up to my right calf almost instantly just from running and walking. My left calf can now flex on command, which I've never been able to do.
rupturing the achilles tendon has happened to me not once, but twice! the first time was march 11th 2005 on my right foot...and get this, march 11th 2008 it happened on my left! weird huh? Did both playing basketball...doing the exact same thing: Exploding on the first step to the hoop. I had went through 3 different casts back in 05 ( with surgery ) and with the left one, i wont be wearing a cast at all..just a boot for 2-3 months(had surgery on left also with the tendon transfer)NO more bball!
hi...thanks for posting this video....i have a sir....when do u start putting weight on your injured achilles tendon? i have this injury 3 weeks ago and i'm still scared to put any weight on it....thanks
you don't get achillies tendonitis... if you can move your foot to a point then you have an achillies...just because you are flat footed doesnt mean you have "achillies tendonitis"
true and not true. he is right about the strain it can put on your tendon bc that is a place it is attached to. Really, your Achilles can cause lots of problems. For me, i had short Achilles which caused chronic tendonitis, and i also have short hamstrings bc of it. All that good stuff caused me to have a plate in my lower lumbar to not fuse together in turn causing a herniated/bulging disk in my lower lumbar . . . not fun and physical therapy wont help, and im only 16

surgery is the last option isn't it?? does anyone know how long it takes to treat a chronic tendinitis?

very long. for months or even years. i have chronic achilitis for 5 years, and I think I will go for surgery in near future.

if the tendon ruptures, there's no other choice but surgery.
starplaya09 1 year ago
@starplaya09 Infact, there are 2 choices, either surgerey or just laeve it in a cast and let nature do the work.
