There is a whole story behind that clip, and not just strictly fun as kamerunzz wants you to believe. The members of that group are scattered all over, but the army band still remains up to date.
can i know the meaning of this song? Obviously Shakila didn;t understand it either coz she said in an interview that it is swahili song
Hello, I will attempt an answer to your question, and not go offtrack as my brother MrMandrass has done.
Like in every other country, the Police, Marine , Airforce Army etc all have bands, be they brazz marching bands or orchestras, with the idea being to provide music during official and un-official ceremonies.
The Group Zangalewa was the Musical arm of the Army here in Yaounde Cameroon, and there are scores of military bands operating now in Cameroon. Zangalewa was one.
Zangalewa pgroup played this song in 1981, I was in the University of Yaounde by then, and they used to come and stage it at the Amphi 700 of the University oo Yaounde.
These guys were great bold enough to mask the political atmosphere in Cameroon with a military song mocking Paul who came to power through sly methods to brace up well to should the weight of a nation. The military warned him not to offend them in any way either through salary cuts or forced retirement and Biya understood the message.
Oh, this song has brought so many memories.. How old was I? 8yrs old. Hahaha... It suddenly caught on to put clothes under shirts & shorts to look like them
shakira knows this song because this song was played in barranquilla colombia when we were young i'm around her same age from barranquilla colombia...all sort of african music is played in the north coast of colombia they called it champeta or terapia and this is one of the most famous of them zangalewa in barranquilla we used to called it waka waka...all she did was pay a tribute to africa by using their own music...get it right before you post stuff you know nothing about.
@juanchoquilla I am totally agree with you, as I was born in barranquilla, too, but I raised in Santa Marta.
people fron North Colombian Coast had heard this song years ago before Shakira sang it, but what she did was a tribute to African music. you and I understand cause we are Northern Colombian or well-known Costeños. so, people shouldnt post thing without knowing anything at all.
OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!....i remember watching this song when i was young on afrobeat in zimbabwe,,,,had no idea what the guys were saying but we thought they were so funny and entertaining.....i know people say shakira's version is better but hey the fact remains the song is not hers...lol.. anyway big up 2 e group....
@nat3asha this is not the version Shakira copied from look up one written Zamina (Waka Waka , time for africa) African Version song. This is just one of the songs on the albulm. You will realise Shakira's version is not better if you are african because the song is original rhumba
A ver...
I'm also from Holland, and like lahmzak is saying this song is used as ending tune after our world cup review program. Fantastic song. Great choice of the program maker. The Netherlands World Champion 2010!!!
whats wrong with you guys. before Shakira sang the song only few of you listen the song and now the whole world is listing the song. you must thank Shakira.
Shakira's version is more professional, and presentable than the so call the original. anyway non of them can claim ownership, they both picked it from the streets. this song has been there for years before the so call original version was recorded.
@Thegrafias They both picked it from the street? are you kidding the Zamina passage has a few lines the song last 11 minutes. They can in deed claim ownership if it was not them Shakira would have never heard of it. Or you try to say Shakira used to hang out in cameroonian streets and picked the lyrics to record the song. "The so called original version" as you call it is the work of this Band hate it or Love it wont change nothing Nobody cares if shakira's is more professional Its a mere Copy.
The song is still used today almost everywhere in Africa by soldiers, policemen, boy scouts, sportsmen and their supporters, usually during training or for rallying. It is also widely used in schools throughout the continent especially in Cameroon as a marching song and almost everyone in the country knows the chorus of the song by heart. The song was also popular in Colombia where it was known as "The Military" and brought to the country by West African DJs.
CUAL ES LA BRONCA CON SHAKIRA, POR ALGO LA CANTO! O ES QUE CREEN QUE EN COLOMBIA NADIE SABE DE DONDE VIENE ESTA CANCION Y LA TERAPIA , LA CHAMPETA......! CUAL ES LA ENVIDIA, DISFRUTENLA , QUE BASTANTE QUE ME TOCO BAILARLA! Y AHORA ME LA REPITO.....COMO LES QUEDO EL OJO ; AH Y ES COLOMBIANA Y COSTEÑA LA SHAKIRA!

It's embarrassing that a protest song is reduced to a low level piece of PLASTIC like "Waka Waka" ... Promoting those Capitalist Circus...
I hope no POP singer ever touch Mercedes Sosa, Jhonn Lenon or... oh sit THEY ALREADY DID!?

OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!....i remember watching this song when i was young on afrobeat in zimbabwe,,,,had no idea what the guys were saying but we thought they were so funny and entertaining.....i know people say shakira's version is better but hey the fact remains the song is not hers...lol.. anyway big up 2 e group....
nat3asha 1 year ago
@nat3asha this is not the version Shakira copied from look up one written Zamina (Waka Waka , time for africa) African Version song. This is just one of the songs on the albulm. You will realise Shakira's version is not better if you are african because the song is original rhumba
01mandi 1 year ago
@01mandi This one is the original version any other version you will hear is a copy.

A ver...

Shakira's version is more professional, and presentable than the so call the original. anyway non of them can claim ownership, they both picked it from the streets. this song has been there for years before the so call original version was recorded.
Thegrafias 1 year ago
@Thegrafias This is not the song she copied its one on the same album
01mandi 1 year ago
@Thegrafias They both picked it from the street? are you kidding the Zamina passage has a few lines the song last 11 minutes. They can in deed claim ownership if it was not them Shakira would have never heard of it. Or you try to say Shakira used to hang out in cameroonian streets and picked the lyrics to record the song. "The so called original version" as you call it is the work of this Band hate it or Love it wont change nothing Nobody cares if shakira's is more professional Its a mere Copy.

electra2303 1 year ago

The song is still used today almost everywhere in Africa by soldiers, policemen, boy scouts, sportsmen and their supporters, usually during training or for rallying. It is also widely used in schools throughout the continent especially in Cameroon as a marching song and almost everyone in the country knows the chorus of the song by heart. The song was also popular in Colombia where it was known as "The Military" and brought to the country by West African DJs.
