@BrendanRoganArts lmao, "power sliding" is drifting. I don't think you really know much about drifting. Instead you like to call others "noobs" and pretend like you know something when you don't.
@BrendanRoganArts I like how you don't know what welding a diff will do to a car's handling, yet you seem to think there isn't a difference between a power slide (real racing) and a drift (Japanese n00b car sliding).
I'll admit drifting is cool, but it's completely useless in the real world.
@TehButterflyEffect IDK about welded diffs? I do know, you can confirm in various drifting forums that: it reduces traction by turning both tires at the same rate in a turn, making it easier for cars to slide and can be dangerous in the rain on regular roads. It's also funny how you insult drifting and then claim that it's used in racing. Any sliding, no matter where even during a race, is called "drifting." It's also funny how you say its is useless compared to racing...
@BrendanRoganArts cntd. I'm sure racing is soooo useful "in the real world," that's why granny goes racing every weekend and it's part of Driver Ed. courses in every high school.smh
In "the real world" racing is just as useless as drifting (for the most part),they are both just sports that require skill, but to not acknowledge drifting because it has nothing to to with being the fastest is pretty lame and narrow-minded when it comes to auto-sports.
@BrendanRoganArts Welded diffs increase traction to the point where it makes it very difficult to turn. Once you are sliding (as long as you are rear-wheel drive) it is easier to control the slide with welded diffs. With front wheel drive, welding your diffs would make it completely impossible to turn.
Again, you are refusing to acknowledge the difference between a drift and a power slide. There is a difference. "Drifters" may not think so, but any rally racer will disagree.
@zbabar3000 I'm not sure myself, I came here because I wanted to find out how LSDs help with drifting I had heard in the past that LSDs helped somehow, but I also heard that people who drift welded their diffs to make it easier to initiate drift. I wouldn't recommend welding a diff on a street driven car though because it might make it more difficult to control for regular driving.
If I spin a wheel backwards (like if it was in Reverse) they both spin in the SAME direction, both at the same time! But If I spin them forward, the other wheel doesn't spin at all. So do I have an LSD or NOT???
Lsd give the car better traction between wheels. There are different types of lsd, but I only know a little about one type. It uses blocks of friction material like a clutch disc and it rubs between the 2 output gears. When you make a corner, it rubs the blocks and the wheels turn at different speeds, but when you are on snow/ice, the two wheels should turn together and get more traction to the ground. Otherwise you would just spin the one wheel and not get anywhere.
@AWDfreak this method is used to identify all types of LSD's cone type or clutch type but the best method is to try an turn each drive shaft in different directions.
i much prefer my limited slip rear over a posi rear that i had on another truck. when going around corners at a high speed the rear doesnt bounce with limited like my posi did. posi is great for racing but every day driving...i prefer the limited slip. with the limited there is extra "ass" when you need a little more push than standard.
with lsd both tires spin in the same "proportion" lets say, so its easier to powerslide, but also the thing about lsd is that it prevents excesive wheel spin, so it´s easier to powerslide, but harder to mantain the powerslide
@rs05uk Why do people comment on the material in other languages if all the other comments are in English? The guy basically said that he hopes that now, after watching the video all various arseholes will know what limited slip differential is. Gee, learn languages people!

That all depends on the options selected when the car was new, unless its been an optional extra or fitted afterwards as mentioned on the post to 905th below, I cannot say yes or no that, use the info below to find out if you have an LSD.

That will be standard 905th, you can find out for sure if you either burn off :D and see if its left 2 marks on the road or if its just 1 its not lsd, OR...you can jack the rear end up and spin a wheel...if the other side spins the same direction your in business, if it goes the opposite direction (which it probably will) its not an lsd.
Im not sure the 318is would have one standard, though it might have been an optional extra.
See what happens, sorry i cant help much more than that.
LSD are rare becuase they are for sports/race usage they require more skill somewhat to keep the car pointing in the correct direction and although it may be funny to watch old margaret do a tank slapper down the street its not very practical and for that reason I'll guess thats why they dont appear on every vehicle plus they cost alot more to make!
Anybody who knows better than I please Correct me.
No. They will spin the same direction, this is because there is no load on either wheel, for instance, you park on mud, half your car is on the mud and half not. On a non LSD equiped vehicle this can be a problem since the standard differential will be trying to put all of the power down on the wheel with less traction (The one on the mud), whereas on an lsd, mine for instance,
there is a 25% lock on the opposite wheel causing both tyres to spin the same direction, although the one on the mud will spin up the other 75% the other wheel is locking up 25% causing the power to go to both wheels at the same time. im not sure I explained this right.
This is a slightly dumbed down version of how it works.
PS, They are only spinning opposite directions because the power (from his hand) is going to the drive shaft, rather than being put in from the prop shaft. if he turns the prop shaft end they will spin the same way. but as you can see the difference between the 2 the lsd makes no difference.
I have a LSD in my 84 rx7 but when I burn out I only get one tire to spin, help?

Dude...
I don't thing this applies to viscous-type limited slip differentials...
I believe this method of identifying differentials applies to the mechanical/clutch type only.
Nonetheless, thanks for uploading! It has probably helped many people who need to identify their type of diff.

lsd is better cause open will just spin one wheel where as lsd will spin one to a point then spin both
locked is the best where you just weld it all together and both wheels spin at the same speed at all times

rs05uk 3 years ago
If the wheels are raised off the ground in a standard differential and you put the car in drive, will the wheels still spin in opposite directions?
n40798 3 years ago
No. They will spin the same direction, this is because there is no load on either wheel, for instance, you park on mud, half your car is on the mud and half not. On a non LSD equiped vehicle this can be a problem since the standard differential will be trying to put all of the power down on the wheel with less traction (The one on the mud), whereas on an lsd, mine for instance,
rs05uk 3 years ago
there is a 25% lock on the opposite wheel causing both tyres to spin the same direction, although the one on the mud will spin up the other 75% the other wheel is locking up 25% causing the power to go to both wheels at the same time. im not sure I explained this right.
This is a slightly dumbed down version of how it works.
Hope this is ok for you.
Rich
rs05uk 3 years ago
PS, They are only spinning opposite directions because the power (from his hand) is going to the drive shaft, rather than being put in from the prop shaft. if he turns the prop shaft end they will spin the same way. but as you can see the difference between the 2 the lsd makes no difference.
