God, what a ride! I never knew there was such a thing as a steam locomotive race for REAL, having seen such things only on TV and in the movies. Who won, by the way, or is this more for fun than actual racing? (Either way, it's awesome!)
Thanks a million for a posting this up, it really made my day!
G'day--great videos. I rode this line when I first lived in OZ in 1970-71 and I know the area well. Steam was still in use on some lines back then and I made a trip from Melborne to Canberra and one leg of the trip was still powered with steam. I loved it. We left OZ in 73 but the memories come back with these videos. Ta mate!
Thanks to those who work so tirelessly preserving important aspects of our heritage - and often with little help (if not indifference) from government and other other authorities. Its unreal to see these machines working like that and those skilled men feeding coal into their hungry mouths. Awesome.
Fantastic video, seeing those locies at speed and right next to you! I note that all three have been retro-fitted with large American chime whistles. Just adds for fun to the video.
It really starts to get exciting at 4 minutes in! I wish they had something like this with steam here in the U.S. We have the Great Steamboat Race held annually in Louisville as part of the Kentucky Derby Festival, but we have lost one of our great contenders, the Delta Queen. It has been replaced by the Belle of Cincinnati.
Not only have we lost the Delta Queen, but also her sisters, the Mississippi Queen and the American Queen.
This is brilliant. I was on the crew of 5029 Nunney Castle in the UK two weeks ago, would love to do something like this out of Paddington! Top notch! 5*
You'll never NEVER see anything like this in the US today. Too much red tape and bureaucracy.

Good video, also good to see there's no shortage of fare-paying passengers to help fund the continued operation of these trains!
Also love the gunzels in the locomotive cabs! - No shortage of people for that job no doubt!
