so refreshing to see that there r still so many sudanese ppl with pride, who r not ashamed to stand up for themselves. it s funny how none of the pro-arabia racists know nothing about the atrocities that took place in history when arabs invaded africa. but yet they r so passionate about their own opinions as if they "are" fact. there is a difference between the two and facts never miss the spot. I wonder if u will all be brave to stand b4 Allah (Al-Muntaqim) with the same conviction u have now.
@MonkeymagicsMum - It's Sudanese. It looks the same but it is Sudanese. You know, despite what your white washed BULLSHIT history books says Africa and Asia traded and was far advance. You don't think Indians have black blood? You can't have brown skin without it PERIOD. It's Sudanese so stfu.
@callmetricia Dear me, I really have struck a raw nerve there, tricia, haven't I? I think yours is what would be called a disproportionate reaction to a trivial statement. Perhaps you should get out more, instead of stewing over comments on a computer screen.
no she iis 100 percent sudanese. being neighbours, it is not surprising for sudanese/ eretrian and ethiopian traditions, customs, music and dress to seep across borders.
The costume is adorned by northern sudanese women on their henna night- gold from head to toe, red 'tobe' (the wrap dress), henna on the feet, legs, hands and arms and commonly a long, synthetic braided hair wig.
It is the crescent shaped gold pieces that you can see the bride wearing close to her ears that indicate that the custom is sudanese. These pieces, singly referred to as 'hilal' are NEVER absent from nothern sudanese wedding rituals.
@crazyabeer Thanks for the info. I appreciate you answering my questions. I've met a few Sudanese people while in Ethiopia, but I've never actually seen any of their customs. Can the hilal actually be worn in the ear? Do you know where I can get them outside of Sudan?
ur welcome. Unfortunatly I have no idea whether it is possible to purchase a hilal outside of north and easty africa and the middle east. I believe most people obtain theirs from sudan in europe and the u.s. I am not even sure if the hilal is individually sold because it is usually attached to the head piece ( the wig i told u about before is sort of like a woven hat at the top with the gold attached and then the 'hair 'flowing from the the bottom).
The hilal isn't typically worn on the ears, but i guess if one can obtain them somehow they might be able to detach them from the wig and use parts from old earrings to create hilal earrings???? But the success of this would certainly depend on how creative a person is.
@crazyabeer Three final question. Is the henna night part of the wedding ceremony? Is it women only? Is this woman someone famous since her henna night is televised? And I think I know the common thread between the Sudanese and all of the other tribes I mentioned; they're all predominantly Muslim. Religion translating into common "culture" despite geography and disparate tribal affiliations. Thank you. So often you come to sites like this (culltural) and people just ignore you.
@jadapoo1 the henna night constitutes just one part of the lengthy sudanese wedding ceremony, which can extend over a period of of several days, and includes aspects such as the dancing of the bride, where she will perform a choreographed dance routine for her audience and the jirtik, which involves the couple spitting milk on each other. In the past, there was no such thing as sexual segregation in the celebrations.
@jadapoo1 Today, islamisation (albeit that when these practices were introduced the population was already muslim) has meant segregation, so yes, the henna and bridal dance routine are mainly 'pour femme'! However, the henna night has been recently modified so that rather than the traditional drums (daluka), a modern keyboard is used and both sexes attend the party. The bridal dance though has not undergone such a transformation because the bride dances provocativly in revealing clothes.
@crazyabeer From what I understand the dance you speak of is considered "low" by many Sudanese. I've learned that the dance has been around for thousands of years before the Muslim religion was introduced. At one time the bride would dance nude, but for a waist belt before members of the groom's family, her family, the bride's female friends and of course the groom; to showcase her beauty and grace. So you keep your old ways alive? That's wonderful.
@jadapoo1 No..We dont consider the dance 'low', far from it. Yes, it is a very sensual dance with lots of provocative moves and shows of flesh, but it is the highlight of a wedding 4 us. According to islam, the dance would be wrong, pure n simple, but in sudan, religion is put aside where culture is concerned and we tend to do things like dress the bride, rather than allow her to be seen semi naked, as a sort of compromise that allows us to engage in religion AND tradition simultaneously.
@crazyabeer I was watchin "Brides of the Nile Dancing the Sudanese Bridal Dance" and it was mentioned by the commentator at the end of the dance that the Sudanese find the dance to be "low". I'm a life long Westerner, so to me it's pretty tame. It's a very beautiful dance.
@jadapoo1 The woman is not famous, she is merely an actress or a model, filmed in TV studios. Yes islam is 1 link (islamic radicals would actually criticise dance, music)!!. But The similarities also arise from proximity, inter-tribal marriages,cross-border migration .Also, theres an ancient bond between these people. We love 1another and readily adopt elements from each others cultures. 1 example is the incorporation of ethiopian shoulder shaking into the bridal dance routine more recently.
@crazyabeer I haven't met many Ethiopians with Sudanese family members. Maybe there are more along the border areas. I will agree that there is a bond among the people. I like Ethiopian shoulder dancing. It'spretty cool. The Sudannese wedding ceremony must be an experience. How much of the wedding ceremony has remained intact since you all became Muslim, Christian?
@jadapoo1 Sudanese men in particular are infatuated with the beauty of ethiopian women (not all-b4 any youtube users jump down my throat).
Most of our ceremonial aspects are still in place- the smoke baths, the scented oils, the 'hareera', the sandalwood incense, but other aspects are being subjected to modification in accordance with religion n the times. For ex, many brides now accessorize in silver rather than gold and others wear 'tobe'in colours other than red.Modernization kills culture.
@crazyabeer No one should jump down your throat. Many people find Ethiopian women attractive, but I have to say Sudanese women are gorgeous as well. I met a honeymooning Sudanese couple in Ethiopia. The woman was very striking. So much so that I had to speak to the couple. She looked like the "bride" dancing in this video (facial shape, color) with features of the lady at 1:12 thrown in. STUNNING...Her nature was very "soft", feminine. Sudanese men are VERY fortunate.
@crazyabeer ahahahaha sudanese men like ethiopian beauty? obviously u have NEVER seen the queens of the nile(sudanese) they reign in beauty! I can show u sudanese women that will blow any woman in the world out the water. nobody wants diseased ethiopian women im sorry. you do NOT speak for sudanese men. ethiopian women run to sduanese men becuz theri own men arent real men...sudanese men are known to take care of their women. i seen ethiopians, theyre nothing compared to sudanese..this is a fact
@doublew84 shut the fuck up! obviously u havent seen northern sudaneses so shut ur mouth! Sudan is the most diverse country in africa!! we have people who are very dark skin in the south and medium brown and we have sudanese who pass for spanish/italian/arab! so shut your mouth, Speak for your own self! theyre not wannabes u dumb prick ,they have arab blood! shur ur jealous ignorant ass up and watch the vid! u really dont wanna talk when u dont know shit
