Great video. The sad thing about this is as visitors increase to see the bus so will the grafitti and souvenir hunters. Ryan's Daughter, a film by David Lean was made here in Ireland. They left the schoolhouse depicted in the film and I visited in 1970 when it was intact. I went back two years ago and its a ruin from trophy hunters taking bits away. It starts with grafitti and then they start pulling strips off. It should be left as a monument to the man. Look at some of the recent clips.
That's the best you could come up with you ass!? I'd say it was a little too late now that I've seen the video! I didn't write I didn't like them, I do in fact like them, I dont, however, -now read this nice and slow you moron-, I dont like their video for the clear reason I described. Now piss off you douche bag, you're out of your league.
Your careless video inventory of Chris' stuff marked all of that for theft by the assholes who find it a thrill to go out there and ruin it for everyone else by way of their guns and sticky fingers. How amazingly irresponsible for two adult professionals that should know better. Im not impressed.
i don´t get how people can be so ignorant by calling chris an idiot for not having a map! not knowing it better, doesn´t means that you´re an idiot! you´re an idiot, if you know it better, but acting like you don´t know!
This one guy, Ron Lamothe, who made a documentary about McCandless claims that Krakauer actually not only knows Chris DID HAVE a map with him but is also distorting the truth to make the story more appealing. He's debunking some other Krakauer/Penn stuff, too. The documentary is called The Call of the Wild, and the website has a section dedicated to this.
great video. tells and shows a lot about how people criticize other people. i for one have respect for Chris and for the people who did / do the things that he did.
but he wasn't on a blank spot -- he stayed in a well traveled area, less than 30 miles from a park highway. Imagine that - starving to death, in the summer, less than 30 miles from civilization. living in an old abandoned vehicle with a wood stove in it is hardly being "in the wild"
It doesn't surprise me that Hollywood is making him out to be something great, I mean, that is how they get us all to the movies, but how this guy became a hero, I will never know. Many have done more.
@Dix994 exactly!....Sean Penn should read the book "Alaskas Wolf Man" by Jim Rearden, NOW THAT would be a great movie. Thousands have done what Chris tried to do, you dont get second chances in AK.
@Phatberry how can you assume how I will die? Do you know me?
There are so many more people who have contributed or are contributing so much more to the world. If what this guy did is all that it takes to inspire you, you must not get out much, or have done much with your life.
I can assure you, I LIVE A HIGHLY MORE ACTIVE AND INTRESTING life then 95% of the youtubers on this page. The fact that I see, countless people live clean cut, straightline predictable unchallenging lives, scares the shit out of me, and to get out the rat race, you need inspiration.McCandless is that inspiration
@Dix994 what inspire you then.......money? the spawn of all evil....i can assure you i watched my cosuin of 26 die infrotn of me last year, And at his funeral, people neevr remember him for his money, but for his memories....And im sure mccandless has a hell alot more then you
@Phatberry I've enough $ 2 be comfortable, which is necessary unless u want to live in the gutter like a crackhead . Inspiration to me is those who R proactive in life, not the ones who r on a desperate search for inner self. Everyone goes thru that, in their teens, early 20's. & then you grow up, & find a balance between the life you want and what is necessary to survive in this world.
Millions have done what CM did, u just don't hear about 'em cause they didn't die in the process.
@Phatberry the stuff you say sounds pretty ironic after checking your channel if that reflects your hobbies?, golf&party is hardly living outdoors or living at all, its just the stuff for ppl in the unchallenging boring rat race or hamster wheel
Yes, I understand, but since my party/golf life style i have been amongst my cousins dead due to cancer, which is vitalized my life to whatr im doing oday which is quitting my job sold my car, sold all my posessions, and heading to Australia with a one way ticket and seeing where the road takes me.
Thanks Good video I kind of wish there was a way to preserve the bus as people have gone there and destroyed it.Its a monument!I cant understand why somebody would trek all the way there and not see the beauty that Chris did.
I think that people who dont understand did what society told them to and now they are miserable.red1100cc thinks were on acid?Where did he get that?Miserable creep with lousy attitude.
Don't let my possible tone downplay my love and respect for Chris, but the simple fact of the matter is that he starved to death. He burned off more calories than he was consuming and there went the ballgame. So why lie? The truth is far more ironic and tragic than Krakauer's version, does it not mesh with his romanticized outlook at Chris: the before-his-time young man who wanted nothing to do with a diseased world when in fact he had every intention of rejoining it? At least to write his book.
Why did Krakauer lie about Chris's death? His SOS note says that he was injured - his infamous self-portrait in front of the bus shows a shoulder injury. His map wouldn't show the tram downriver and with such an injury he must have known he couldn't simply take the miner's trail over the river and hike back to Healy. Krakauer only mentions, however, that Chris mistook two different species of sweet pea after eating the "safe" one for months and/or ate massive amounts of moldy seeds and/or ...
People say he stumbled upon the bus thats not correct , the magic bus was a part of hobo, drifter lore for years. Chris went there purposely Alaska is a big place you don" just stuble onto the stampede trail and wind up at the bus.
How can they say that he did NOT have a map when the coroners report listed a map in the personal possessions that were found?????????? It's time for the truth to come out people.
Krakauer wanted to romanticize Chris; he was an angry young man with a vendetta who was so incensed at the world his parents had given him that he burned his money and identification and walked Into the Wild without a map in order to "find a blank spot" (we know, of course, that that latter scenario is untrue). Not only did Chris NOT destroy his identification or leave his road map behind, he also brought to the bus $300 and his library cards. Let me stress: his library cards.
When Chris first started his journey, he burned his money in Detrital Wash. He may very well have gotten another ID card when he was working again in "civilization" at the MacDonald's.
Before he left for Alaska, he had worked in Carthage, SD and made a bunch of money...he didn't destroy it, but used it.
How can you assume that everything you pointed out in Krakauer's take is false...especially since he wrote the book based on extensive interviews, research, and Chris' own journal?
Yes he had a U.S. Geological Survey Map, I believe that Krakauer is not denying that in the book. It really depends on the scale when the mao could be of much use around the bus or was it just for a very general orientation?
Road map. "The only navigational aid in his possession was a tattered state road map he'd scrounged at a gas station" (p. 5) which is then omitted from later pages in the book (p. 131 there's no mention of the map) and the movie and, oh, this program. "'He didn't even have a fucking map! What kind of idiot.' That was the point. There's no blank spots on the map anymore, anywhere on earth. You want a blank spot on the map, you've got to leave the map behind."
yes, there are very few if any maps that come of much use around the bus. The stampede trail is barely even visible on the map that encompasses all of Denali Nat'l Park.
They had some worthy hits, but they went way downhill after roger hodgson and richard palmer left the band. as for the "forever" thing, they haven't had any hits since the eighties, but we will always cherish them as one of the definitive bands of their time.
after he gets out of the river i half expected him to say "i battled some gnarly waves bro!" then walk up and punch the camera man in the face.
oh man he should have said "fuck this story of a rich brat who got himself killed like an idiot, i'm making fast times at ridgemont high 2! and this time you're gonna choke on that pizza mr hand! you dick!" LMAO!!
you're dumber than a dried up dog turd, pulverized by a lawn mower on a hot summer day, as is anyone so lazy they would abbreviate "you" and "your" with "u" and "ur." that's stupid kiddie crap only used by morons.
oh jeez you got me! i'm just typing because i enjoy the sound of my own keystrokes!
i read it, then i frisbeed it into the fireplace in disgust. young college grads do what mccandless did all the time. they hitch around with little more than a copy of "walden" or "on the road" trying to add some grit to that pre-packaged identity their college sold them. he only became a legend because he did something extra stupid and died. pretty selfish too, what he did to his family. mccandless was a shit.
if no one cares why are they asking? if you don't care why are you responding?
Do me a favor and come up with an original insult. 'You idiot' is the cliche-est cliche that ever cliched.
