  • Not Sonny Payne....it;s Rufus Speedy Jones.

  • also notice that Rufus Jones plays a double bass drum setup. However, behind Frank on Fly Me to the Moon, there is a single bass drum. Sonny Payne

  • That is definitely Sonny Payne playing behind Frank!!

    Sou trombonista!!rsrsrsrs.

  • DEFINITELY Rufus Speedy Jones on drums for the first half of the vid.

It even says so on his right bass drum, albeit a bit tricky to read.

3.49 onwards must be from another show - different drum kit and band seating. Probably Sonny Paine on drums when Frank is singing.

  • In other words- WOW! does it get any better? Hell NO!

  • It's Sonny Payne on drums

  • That's Rufus Jones. Not Sonny.

  • WHEN YU compare era's to all this archived Stuff -Greatness ,have to call out the truth's , its all over Today,....

  • Rufus Speedy Jones on drums...

    Fantastic!!!

  • I've also been been searching for this episode of the Hollywood Palace since Frankie is my all time favorite. Hope they will keep us posted if the whole show ever emerges There were other great performances by Frank contained on this best episode of the series. (Thanks!!)

  • Jesus H Christ, that drummer is insane! The trombone playing, wow!! Smokin'.

  • The second part of this post with Sinatra singing it looks and sounds like Sonny Payne playing instead of Rufus. They either switched drum sets and drummers or the second part is from another show.

  • @stevebul Steve, I'll be damned if you're not right. If that's not Sonny Payne, then I don't know what is!

  • Could you post more from this show PLEASE!

  • This is VERY rare to see Rufus "Speedy" Jones playing drums with Basie. Rufus was Duke Ellington's last drummer mid to late '60's until Duke's death in 1974. When Sinatra did "Sinatra at the Sands" in Sept 1967, I saw Frank do the same show 3 months earlier at the Civic Arena in Pittsburgh with Buddy Rich and his Orch. Buddy played that whole show which was rare because Frank usually had his own drummer (Irv Cottler). To this day I still say that THAT show was the best I ever saw.

  • @DrumTchr That must have been AMAZING! I saw Frank in the '80's with Buddy and yes, Irv DID play Sinatra's part of the show. I'm told that the Live At The Sands recording had Sonny Payne on drums at Frank's request. That's what I heard anyway...

  • It sure was amazing. To see Buddy (with his band) play Frank's show in 1967 was incredible.

These guys are all very nice people too. Rufus Speedy Jones (in 1973) was playing with Duke. I was 18 then and about to study at Berklee in Boston with Alan Dawson. Duke and the orch came through my small home town and played a concert/dance at the local country club. Duke and Rufus let me sit in with the band. Lucky I have pics or nobody would believe me. Steve Maxwell has the drums Rufus used then.

  • Cool! Never saw Duke. I saw Basie several times when he was still alive. Greg Field was the drummer. When I was singing with The Tommy Dorsey Orchestra we worked opposite The Basie Band at The Hollywood Bowl. Duffy Jackson was the drummer. I saw Buddy's Band several times. Sinatra several times and got to be friends with Irv. Nice guy!

  • @DrumTchr - there's at least one other Basie clip on YouTube with Rufus "Speedy" Jones on drums - it's entitled "April in Paris (Thad Jones NOT solo)"...

  • Zoot, thats why I said it was rare to see him. In 1973 he was playing with Duke (as I mentioned) and they passed through my hometown and Duke's Big Band did a gig at a Country Club there. Both Rufus and Duke allowed me (at 18 years old) to sit in with the band for as many tunes as I wanted. Luckily I have pictures of me playing with the band (and with Duke) or nobody today would believe that I played with Duke Ellington and his Orch. Steve Maxwell Drums has that drumset.

  • could someone upload him singing the gal that got away its was up before but got taken down

  • Wow! Great! Looks like Quincy conducting the band there on the right. Great days and legendary nights. What an era. Thanks for posting this.

  • this is good ... basie kick ass

  • Sinatra and Basie both in fine forum. At their best making great music as always.

  • a master class in performance!

  • This kicks ass

  • where is this video?? i like. buy original!!

  • Sorry never released in my country Nippon

  • Did this come out before the Basie Sinatra album with fly me to the moon on it? When he starts to sing there really isnt a reaction by the crowd...

  • Probably not a live show and had the clapping added during production.

  • wrong.. this was a live show! It was at the Hollywood Palace!

  • Lockjaw has a sound all his own and I didn't know that Al Grey was as sharp as he was. Rufus.....WOW what can you say!!

  • Rufous --he the cat

  • Simply amazing.

  • Wow, that was awesome. Thank you for uploading this. I knew Rufus Jones was great but had never seen him on video before until now.

  • Synergy!

  • sinatra's voice in 1965 + basie band : the best of the best

  • Wow, I never knew this even happened!
