  • get rid of the senate

  • lol is this really our senate?

  • abolish the Senate completely ..

  • once again that chair is a jackass......how are our taxes paying this asshole??

  • this is why no one wants to move to canada except while they are waiting to move to the u.s.

  • Canadaians don't elect senators?

  • @ToxicOdiousOne

or the leader of the opposition.....

  • @ToxicOdiousOne

No, they are appointed by the Prime Minister of the moment...which is why they command little respect

  • I'm no expert on the issue of senate reform by any means, but I honestly don't see how my country is being benefited by paying these gentlemen to bicker about nothing all day.

  • Wow, Those People Are So Old, Its Been 1 Minute & THey Forgot What They JUST DID! Pay Me $200 000.00 A Year, & My Buddys.

  • We need an elected Senate to get these old Liberals out of here.

  • theyre all the same

  • I agree, we need an elected senate.

  • lol the system works!

  • Trust me, no other committee is like SCONSAD

  • The kind of response from Sen. Tkachuk is disturbing and make one wonder who in the heck ever nominated this guy into the Senate of Canada, boy o boy, what a mistake!

  • I don't know who nominated your Senator in question but the Chair was nominated by Trudeau...............Fuddle Duddle!!!!!

  • Senator Banks is awesome.

  • And guess who pays for all of this?

  • Does anyone here knowledgeable on the topic know whether Kenny & Tkachuk is right on the question of what what proportion of the members is needed to rescind a previously-adopted motion? Tkachuk is claiming it's 2/3; Kenny is saying that's wrong. In general, it tends to be that same proportion need to adopt the motion in the first place. What's the story for RONR ("Rescind, repeal, or annul") motions in Senate committees?

  • Sorry: I meant Kenny *or* Tkachuk

  • What an embarrassment. I am ashamed to be Canadian.

  • suck it up you pussy

If you're actually ashamed over a few senators bickering then you've got some emotional problems.

  • lol this is so bad...

  • Hats off to Senator Tommy Banks here for making an honest effort to make the tone of the meeting civil and move things along by bringing the two parties together.

The others should look to Senator Banks as a role model for future meetings. This should not be about egos, or partisan sniping, but serving your country.

This is an example of where partisan politics does not belong in the Senate.

And sadly, this little display did a disservice to hardworking Senators from both sides.

  • This is really not bad at all. Have you seen parliamentarians in other countries???? They have fist fights and insult each others openly. Again, we are waaaay too politically correct in this country and that is why our political life is so freakin' BORING.

  • Boring is good. I have been medically boring my whole life. I have never had someone try to shoot me or stab me in my entire life. Bombs have never flown above my head, nor have missiles. I have never had to fight someone over food or water, I have never been forced into war, and as much as I wanted to fight people and for things to be "exciting" when I was a kid, I have grown up since then. Hopefully you will too. I am happy to live in a "boring" country. It will last longer than the other ones

  • Oh man. At one point this committee had never had a not unanimous vote. If they hate the Senate this much why the Hell did they take the appointments.

  • you've got a good point.

BUT, I think that Canadians really need to be more vocal when it comes to issues that affect their lives. We need to learn from the French. People tend to complain about government's actions all the time, but nobody's willing to demonstrate in the streets and make their voice heard. That would make our political life more "exciting" and that will make politicians more accountable to their citizens.

  • Everybody please remember this next April 30th. What a waste of my money.

  • Another fine example of Senators incompetency featured in this video:

    watch?v=-ABCLvOu-9Y

  • your out of order...no no YOUR out of order....nonono this whole damn system is out of order..lol

  • Your wrong Chair! who put that guy as the chair?? what a goof!

  • The Chair has a difficult job, made more difficult by members of his committee who stalwartly refuse to abide by Senate rules of order. What is he to do when members exhibit childish behaviour, stamping their feet as it were like three year olds? He remained calm and did not depart from established rules of order. Good for him, and the CONS call him a bully for it.

  • (2) An order, resolution, or other decision of the Senate may be rescinded on five days' notice if at least two-thirds of the Senators present vote in favour of its rescission.

  • Boy oh boy oh boy. Kenny has an agenda. He's ramming stuff through. He should be forced to step down for the sake of better communication between the council members.

  • FAIL

  • Senator Tkachuk is a piece of work, ain't he? Check out Sen. Day's look at 7:00 - it's funny how serious they all take this.

  • These conservative clowns are just trying to create problems. You've got to be brain dead to not read between the lines and see what they're doing. I applaud Senator Banks (a conservative) for trying to bring some peace and collegiality back to the meeting. He seems to be the old school kind of politician - the one who respects his political opponents.

  • Funny... I don't see it that way.

Though I am not familiar with committee protocol sounds like the Grits were skipping procedure.

Either way, we need more of this in the Commons to embarrass our politicians into carry out real work for the country.

  • Banks is Liberal nice try

  • Comment removed

  • I don't even know what they're talking about anymore.

  • Useless senate. What's the next vote? Who gets to use the bathroom first and in what order?

  • wow this is nothing, there's footage from other countrys with fists and feet flying and chairs smashing.. This is just some crappy bickering, how this made National news I'll never understand...

  • yes but this is canada.

    hissy fits galore

  • "deal with him any way he wants?"

    -WEDGIE TIME!-

    tired of these conservative hacks.

  • Senator Tkachuk is correct on the necessity of a 2/3rd's vote in order to rescind a previous motion and Colin Kenny arbitrarily cuts off any questions whatsoever. What an effective system we have when unelected officials who can ignore the rules they are under have the ability to grind our government to a halt.

It's well past time to get rid of the Senate and any other government position/group/official that has unelected and unaccountable control over decisions effecting every Canadian.

  • This is ridiculous! Get rid of them all - we need a new system. A system that represents the people of this country and their concerns. Why are they bickering over a border crossing visit? What can they possibly accomplish by visiting our border crossings anyway? Abosolutely nothing, that's what. The same thing they accomplish everyday on the job....the whole five days they work each year while we pay for their useless border crossing visits and committees. Does this make sense to anyone???

  • what did they say after, "this brings us back to senator..." sorry I fell asleep. lol

  • In Canada:

We don't elect our head of state.

We don't elect our head of government.

We don't elect our senate (shown here).

Our democracy is quite similar to China in that we merely elect a regional representative (our Member of Parliament).

We of course have a free press and rights and freedoms. But our democracy isn't so democratic.

  • "Free press" -- you serious? As for rights and freedoms, more disappear every day.

The PM also appoints judges, heads of committees, cabinet, etc.

  • It is wonderful to see our tax dollars hard at work.

  • Even though i agree that the paranoiac attitude of the conservatives is slightly "over the top"... however... it does appear that the chair is legitimately trying to thwart the Conservatives view... i hate to say it... but the chair is really ignoring protocol and is bias against the conservatives...

it must be frustrating for the Conservatives...

  • freakin retards in charge of our security........pathetic just pathetic..........

  • Conservative conspiracy theorists.

  • these meetings are more ineffective then the ones at my work.

  • We need electoral reform. We need a system better than first-past-the-post. We need a run-off election like the federal parties use.

If there is 3 people running (for example) the one with the least votes transfers his/her vote to his second choice on the ballot.

This way only people with majority support are elected. Currently if 5 people are running a person could be elected with 21% support.

    Ridiculous.

  • So when are we shutting the Senate down, again?

  • I feel like every word they say costs me twenty bucks.... I wonder what they are talking about

  • Full marks for the combover!!

  • It ain't pretty, but it works.

  • HAHAHAHAHA!!! awesome

  • I have watched both Senate committee videos, that just re-affirm my belief that partisan politics over-ride any concrete benefits for the general public, and that the Senate should be abolished or at least elected by the public, not appointed with a vested interest by the party in power.

  • I've just watched the two posted videos and they do not behave 'badly'.

There are definitely issues which need to be addressed.

I hate to say it...I'm a Liberal after all...but the Liberals where arrogant, dismissive, controlling and down right ignorant. Embarassing myself and my party. :(

If anyone behaves badly it is Kenny he does not deserve the position.

  • I have no idea what they're trying to accomplish. Is this a committee to plan trips for themselves? Trying to figure out how to spend their funding? Just wasting our tax dollars by sitting in a group, wearing suits, and passing wind? Fire all these useless gas bags.

  • The Chair is the authority here.

  • The Chair Colin Kenny is abusing his authority by stacking a committee investigating expenses claimed by Kenny and other Liberal Senators for extravagant things like a junket to Dubai.

  • "It failed!"

    "Why"

"Because I said so that's why!"

    "You are out of order!"

"No, you are out of order!"

    "I challenge the Chair!"

    "I challenge your momma!"

    (sigh)

This is like watching a Strata council meeting. People act like this in any committee, on any subject.

  • This is painful to watch. Who are these people? The conservatives don't seem to know ho it all works.... they are just looking for reasons to pick a fight. what a total and complete waste of time, money, and human life. a bunch of low life's in suits.

  • actually--not to start anything, just a matter of clarification--the liberals technically picked the fight in this instance.

  • do people not know the procedures of the Senate anymore?

  • this is disgusting. Chair seems to have a control issue and seems to think his position gives him the right to make rules. It is true for 2/3 vote, Kenny stated he can make the rules. Why are we screwed up as a country??? Now you know, we all disrespect lawyers, but let the crooks run our country...

  • Conservatives are just a real useless peice of skin. If they don't get their way they act like spoiled little kids and throw a temper tantrum.

  • But he was right about this. Besides, the chair is an ass.

  • lol at 9 minute mark "Alberta border thing"

  • Nice comb over JACKOFF! Ha!

  • Colin Kenny treats taxpayers' money like it's toilet paper.

    ABOLISH THE SENATE NOW!

  • Don't shout.

  • I second that!

Either "Triple E" or complete abolition.

  • this is hilarious

  • Collin Kenny adds considerable weight as to why the Senate should be abolished. For the record an excerpt from the rules of the senate: Rescinding of orders (2) An order, resolution, or other decision of the Senate may be rescinded on five days' notice if at least two-thirds of the Senators present vote in favour of its rescission.

  • I think that the chair's ruling was based on the idea that it was not a ruling of the committee, but the ruling of a sub-committee. if this is the case, I'm not sure that the rule you cite is relevant. Either way, these guys are arguing about who gets to go on a trip to Alberta.

  • Senator Collin Kenny

    watch?v=k2Wc3DGb_Nw

  • What a shame.

  • Looks like some of the senators don't want to do their homework on what is standard procedure, and do not keep themselves up to date with the rulings of the committee.

  • "You're out of order! You're out of order!"

    Everybody's doing Al Pacino impressions!

  • That is one sad looking committee.

  • This was the big deal re: elected senators; the point of all of the arguing and posturing?

Get rid of this nonsense as a good cost saving measure . . . particularly in these tough economic times. These idiots do nothing worthwhile for our country. They could take this talk to a bar and produce the same good.

  • The whole time that poor clerk is thinking "I went to law school."

  • lol. i bet that is exactly what she is thinking!

  • Cunstervatives behaving badly, as usual.

  • Parliament is full of useless clowns and they should all be fired.

  • Abolish this waste of tax payers money...one house of parliament is sufficient..

  • Colin Kenny is a knob!! I see why he's in politics cuz no one would hire a pinhead like him.

  • Colin Kenny is a totally idiot!!!

  • And we pay these IDIOTS!!!

  • WooHoo! Go Senators Go!

  • Nothing new as far as politics go. How disgusting, though.

  • ... what a bunch of goofs eh? ...

  • I'm really happy with our country's leaders and decision makers.

  • I want to have a point of order...on your face! booya!

  • Senator Tkachuk is a jerk! He's the problem!

  • you know, i'm a Liberal, but this guy Kenny is totally off his rocker! If there's a procedural point of contention, there are resources available to make sure the rules are followed.

  • @karine2881 Im not Canadian and I think Kenny is acting like a child.
