Odd... I do like how he sings it, but yet I don't like the accompaniment. I read how a few others said it fits perfectly with being like an ocean, but I didn't hear that. All I heard was that it was "thin" as an accompaniment, and I wanted something thicker. Still great presentation of the lyrics and story. Except for the guitar.
What de "light" ful version of Dar's song. I love what Peter has done with the song. It commnicates the intent of Dar's lyrics while maintaining the mystery and playfulness of the ocean. Love it! Go Peter! Great guitar playing, too.
wow. this is really awesome. i sing, play acoustic, and write. i do "the ocean" a lot. it is a great tune. i love the way he does it. if anyone has any other good Dar covers, please let me know. thanks.
It's weird comparing this version to Dar's. I mean... I'm so very partial to Dar's voice, but his version really works with the lyrics. It's like... they're too different. Both great. I've never heard Peter Mulvey before, though... gotta find more of him!
I just watched Dar do this on Youtube, having never listened to her before, and i gotta say, his version communicates the power of the lyrics SO much more clearly. Her's is so meandering and spooky-Tori-Amos-fairy-goddessy, and I even think there's an ASL interpretter on stage with her, it doesn't have the impact his cover does for me. Dylan wrote a great song, but Hendrix sang "Watchtower" so much more effectively
"Rapture" is a CD from Peter Mulvey you can easily buy at Best Buy. If you go listen to it start to finish, I guarantee you will not only come back here and admit you were incredibly off comparing his material to David Gray's, but you will apologize to me for writing him off and thank me with sexual favors for opening your eyes to a truly phenomenal musician. $50. Right here. I'll bet you in some offshore account somewhere.
Agreed. Peter Mulvey has more emotion & feel in his little finger than our friend David Gray will ever hope to have. aliceprin go see a Mulvey show and be humble.

This is one of the first live songs I'd ever heard Peter perform. Now, 10 years later, he is still special and spectacular!
