  • The child is absolutely enchanting but Richardson matches him every step of the way. Trust Sir Ralph not to be upstaged by anyone or anything, whether a charming child actor or the Russian Revolution.

What a shame this gem isn't better known and more widely appreciated.

  • Great film! Reed directed the actor who plays the child by watching him between takes and then incorporating his natural movements, characteristics, etc. into the film. The child was really just being himself, which makes his scenes even more realistic!

  • Yes, I enjoyed this movie also. Thanks for channel TCM I would never have heard of it. I put it on my Netflix queue.

  • Marvelous film, though quite different from the equally marvelous short story.

Superb performances from both Richardson, the consummate professional and Bobby, the completely natural child.

  • the novel is great, and so is the film

  • A superb film.

The kid in it is brilliant. He has a particularly funny scene at the zoo, which somehow, maybe because of its silence, feels about thirty years ahead of its time.

  • "BAAAAAAAAAAAAINES"!

  • this is one of our favorite films--made when films were crafted with perspicacious import--truly embedded with grace and gravity!

  • I like the plot
