In all fairness, the old dogs deserve the utmost respect for getting mma on the map but that's about it. The biggest factor that never should be overlooked is how fast the game is progressing. The younger guys always have the advantage b/c trainers are still developing techniques for conditioning, mechanics, gameplan's etc. that will best suit mma. Not only that but with mma attracting more attention, recruiters are able to filter through a higher level of potential from a wider talent pool.
@nibbles1637 kids are now growing up "with" the sport and developing a natural sense for it. By the time they are old enough to get into a gym, they can take every lesson and fly with it. Not to mention that every big name in the sport has a target on their back. Every spectator knows the range, speed, techniques, etc. of their favorite fighter. It was Tito Ortiz that told Ken Shamrock that it's all about "In with the new, out with the old". That proves true as he is now on the other side.

He kept his distance from Diaz and lead with his face against Diaz's punches. Those are signs the guy who was dominant for such a long time, is no longer there.

Yes. B/c these guys never know when to quit. Look at Fedor, Nog, Brock, Hughes, etc. So, again: Yes. Frank showed up to a) get a paycheck, and b) do what he likes. It worked against Gracie and Baroni, and probably would've worked against Le had he not fucked around with not using his catch-wrestling against the Ssanshou specialist.
At some point Frank correctly realized that getting paid mattered most than getting punched in the face and so he fought less and less.

In all fairness, the old dogs deserve the utmost respect for getting mma on the map but that's about it. The biggest factor that never should be overlooked is how fast the game is progressing. The younger guys always have the advantage b/c trainers are still developing techniques for conditioning, mechanics, gameplan's etc. that will best suit mma. Not only that but with mma attracting more attention, recruiters are able to filter through a higher level of potential from a wider talent pool.

@nibbles1637 kids are now growing up "with" the sport and developing a natural sense for it. By the time they are old enough to get into a gym, they can take every lesson and fly with it. Not to mention that every big name in the sport has a target on their back. Every spectator knows the range, speed, techniques, etc. of their favorite fighter. It was Tito Ortiz that told Ken Shamrock that it's all about "In with the new, out with the old". That proves true as he is now on the other side.

That's why he will always be "The Prototype for modern MMA"....but remember that the very concept of "prototype" means that it was always intended to be surpassed, inevitably.

@TheDubeo It was actually three years and that time difference is pretty big as far as combat sports is concerned. It's the same thing with guys like Penn and Couture. They were on top of the world in 2007 and 2008, but then two or three years go by and they are retired.

@4R33D0M For as long as Shamrock had been fighting, it was the equivalent to Couture's age. He started fighting when he was 22 and pretty much retired when he was 35. That's a long time for fighting, especially the way he fought. That whole myth about athletes peak performance is bullshit. If you prepare the right way, you can perform the same way at 40 as you did at 25.

Because that seems to be the case for Chuck Liddell, Wanderlei Silva, Randy Couture, Both Shamrock Brothers, Tito Ortiz, etc. Your Gracie fact has no influence on the fact that back in 2006 and 2007 Frank Shamrock was on the top of his game and that 2-3 years later, he was old.

If Frank was old, then he was already old when he beat Gracie, who was as green as green comes--either way, three or two years, and receiving two ass-whoopings, later does not prove your argument that the Frank that Beat CEsar Gracie was hot shit and then wasn't.

@unabomberman Frank cheated in the Renzo fight first off. That's a big difference from "fucking him up." Renzo was winning that fight too. Anyone can beat Phil Baroni. It wasn't Frank's fault Strikeforce didn't have a deeper middleweight division back then, but Frank was the same exact fighter he was when still fighting in the UFC to when he fought Cesar and Renzo. But taking a year off in between fights decreases a fighters skills. If you knew anything about fighting, you'd know that.

What I'm trying to reason with you, whoever you are, is that Frank wasn't hot shit at any point even when he fought newbie Cesar Gracie, Cung Le, or even Nick Diaz. He fought twice in 99, once in 00, once in 03 against a nobody, and once in 06 against Gracie.
Frank used to be hot shit but then he did other stuff with his life and then just showed up to get paid from time to time. This even goes agrees with your ring-rust argument.

@unabomberman Frank wasn't the fighter he was when he faced Cung Le or Nick Diaz. When he fought Cung Le, he tried to kickbox with him which was fucking retarded. All he had to do was get close and get a trip takedown at least and submit Le. When he fought Nick Diaz, he did the same thing BJ Penn did. He kept his distance from Diaz and lead with his face against Diaz's punches. Those are signs the guy who was dominant for such a long time, is no longer there.

Yes. B/c these guys never know when to quit. Look at Fedor, Nog, Brock, Hughes, etc. So, again: Yes. Frank showed up to a) get a paycheck, and b) do what he likes. It worked against Gracie and Baroni, and probably would've worked against Le had he not fucked around with not using his catch-wrestling against the Ssanshou specialist.
At some point Frank correctly realized that getting paid mattered most than getting punched in the face and so he fought less and less.
