  • fantastic i adore horne

  • they need a cake in the face

  • They don't make 'em like these two anymore.

  • This is where the Studio sysytem was a God send to all of us who love to be entertained. They gave us Talent that lasted & entertained us long after Movie business declined & TV took over. We get to see what real acting, singing & real entertainment is. Legendary moments by legends. Even though the Studio system controlled every aspect of their Stars' lives particularly Judy's which ruined her self esteem & well being. The Studios trained them in their craft. Today if u look hot then u are a star

  • Judy had the show business end of her. She was a showman. Lena was a singer.

  • RIP both Lena Horne and Judy Garland! They really inspired me to sing and act.I love them to death!!!!!!

  • Dresses down to the floor....now thats CLASS.Im lovin this.None of that dumb sex stuff just pure unadulterated Talent.R.I.P. Mother Horne!!!!!!!

  • I love Judy and Lena's Dresses here!

  • Wow, what a fantastic gem this is. These two legends together, how cool to see! Thank goodness for YouTube! I just found out today that Vincente Minnelli discovered Lena Horne and he got her cast in Cabin In the sky. I also heard that Lena said that Kay Thompson (Liza's Godmother, and Vincente and Judy's good friend) taught her how to sing. So they seem to have been not just fellow performers but friends. Thanks for posting this!

  • Judy was far the better performer then Lena . Dont get me wrong Lena was a great performer but she didnt have the Garland Charisma. But still a great clip!

  • R.I.P. Soror Lena Horne.

  • lena i still cant believe that your not here anymore! you were one of the last jazz icons we've had!!! love you miss horne!

  • okay- a lot of people here seem to be comparing judy garland and lena horne on their vocal style/ability and trying to say that one is better than the other when in all honesty, i think they compliment each other perfectly... nobody can harmonize like these two and that's why it's so amazing...

  • this series had the most amazing clothes Garland looks fabulous in every clip

  • Wow...never knew these two particular ladies performed together- two of MGM's hothouse orchids, re-invented in the 1960's as legends on television. Wonderful clip, thank you.

  • I LOVE watching her face while she sings. She is amazing!!

  • RIP LENA HORNE!!!!

  • A Beautiful Artist & An Inspirational, Brave 7 Loving Human Being!

    RIP Lena!

  • RIP LENA HORNE - You have earned your reward. Y+You have always been a part of history. A shining example of what a legend is. I will miss you.

  • A great lady, a great singer, a great actress (as we found out AFTER her film career), a brave human rights activist, a courageous American. Lena now becomes part of history. Forever!

  • Thank you Lena for the music..... thank you.

  • i dont have enough words to say how much i love you miss horne, the only word that came to my head is THANK YOU... thank you for so much joy you gave to my life.. i know that you are better now doing what you really wanted to do baby.. now you are maybe singing with miss fitzgerald and miss holiday in heaven and with all your friends, its been a long time gorgeous, now sleep and sweet dreams miss lena.... see you soon

  • Gotta get that show on DVD. Thanks for letting me know there's one. Esp thank the contributor for this gem. I had no idea they ever sang together!!!

  • Что теперь сказать о покойнице? У нас в Союзе её и не знали. Вот такой был железный занавес.

What now to speak about the dead woman. At us in the Union it also did not Know. Here the Iron Curtain was such.

  • I have this show on DVD.

  • Heaven's a better place now - it's got TWO singing angels. :)

    Rest in peace, Miss Lena.

  • They're doing it in heaven together......R.I.P Ms Lena....

  • Lena Mary Calhoun Horne (June 30, 1917 May 9, 2010): was an American jazz singer, actress and dancer. [R.I.P.]

  • R.I.P baby

  • R.I.P. Lena.

  • RIP LADY HORNE! I'm so appreciative of every talented, motivating and impacting effort she's made in her career. What a legend, and a class act.

  • @love4myclarks7 A class act is right. A truly inspriring lady, brave and beautiful. Now she met up with so many others who left before her, now she's hanging with Judy and her best buddy Ava Gardner. Rest in Peace, Miss Horne.

  • @SoCalGal52 INDEED

  • Lena Horne, a true American Classic !

  • R.I.P., Lena--you will always be a legend! And we will miss you...

  • @littleprincey She was a trailblazer in every way! This Lena/Judy is one of the highlights of Judy's series for CBS!

  • And the angels sang. We'll miss you so much.

  • RIP Lena and Judy, classic

  • I read the Gavin book (he can't write worth a damn btw, want a bio?, read Bogle). The drama was minor, Garland was a super quick study and felt Lena was the same so they didn't need much rehearsal, Lena saw it as Garland being lax in preparation, but they wound up enjoying working together.

  • @Geezyone regarding Garland's quick study, it's a good thing since Horne never showed up to that special and Garland had to memorize her(Lena's) parts RIGHT BEFORE the curtain opened.

  • This video IS the special

  • @Geezyone No, this video is "The Judy Garland Show." I'm referring to another engagement that Horne blew off at the last minute (with no warning) because she was in a foul mood. When I find the title, I'll list it.

  • @Geezyone (p.182): "Horne hadn't shown. Twenty minutes later, word came that she was indisposed. The news threw Roger Edens into a panic... He rushed to Judy Garland's dressing room and told her she would have to sing... Garland didn't quite know them, but she and Edens scrambled to find a piano. A famously quick study, she mastered both ballads, and sang them to wild applause."

  • We're talking about two separate events. This video is from the Liza special Liza subbing for Lena was on different occasion.

  • @Geezyone JUDY, not Liza. And I know, I already said I was referring to another engagement.

  • I agree the Gavin book is a hard read. Lena makes a drama out of everything, only different from the way Judy made dramas. People like to view Lena as 'perfect' but of course she'a a diva like everyone else.

  • The real Diva's. (Meant with the utmost compliment.)

  • Mercy sakes!! I just plain enjoyed it!!

  • Part One: I received a great note from Ed (I deleted your mail, I do not have your screename here or I would have thanked you also by email). Edgar wrote suggesting two books ""The Other Side of the Rainbow - With Judy Garland on the Dawn Patrol" by Mel Torme and "Rainbow's End" by Coyne S. Sanders. (Torme, a regular on the show). Seems this particular episode of Ms. Horne and Judy was indeed a 'fight'. Ms. Horne was indeed very displeased by Judy's 'no show' at rehearsals and verbal about it.

  • Part Two: I have not gotten the book by Torme but the book by Coyne S. Sanders is really interesting. Besides explaining why this particular segment looked and 'felt' the way it did because of the tension Judy caused Ms. Horne (Torme agrees saying 'Lena Horne was storming over Judy's lack of professionalism') it details --- episode by episode-- Judy' show. Really interesting and a great look at how the show and Judy spiraled out of control but managed to have more than its share of brilliance.

  • Lena's thing was the distant ICE QUEEN on stage -- on the nightclub stage where her career really took off in the 1950s. Lena is a perfectionist and was indeed very unhappy with Judy on this show. More info to come I'm sure in the new book on Lena by James Gavin -- coming out in JUNE.

  • Forget the assumed drama, the harmony is impecable. Who cares? Amazing!

  • UHHH???? WHAT??? The harmony is not impeccable but very enjoyable. Assumed drama? No, just history ... And asking to forget drama with Judy or Lena's music is like asking somebody to listen to their music with a tin can and string, you might hear something but you aint going to get deep enough! Excluding drama from Diva .... LOL

  • Part 4 ...LOL THE POWER OF THE HORNE !!!

  • Interesting comments on Judy/Lena. Merman wasn't "cold" w Judy--just perfomimg in her usual to the balcony (in China!) mode. She was actually quite amusing in their duet and Garland enjoyed it too. THIS (Lena) was something else. Aside from the not-showing-up-for-rehearsals thing, Lena was in splendid, strong voice. Vocally in better shape than Miss G. And Judy's little tricks, which she used in solos and duets, weren't working. Miss H. was not amused and not giving up one octave to Miss G.

  • umm first of all as great as lena is I think that she had a chip on her shoulders stemming form the MGM days because it was all about judy. sh was in fine voice yes but judy on a bad day is better than anyone...sorry lena

  • Well, as much as I adore Judy, I am not one of those fans who says (or thinks) that "even at her worst Judy was better...etc" That just isn't so. When Judy went off the tracks, she really derailed and there are a number of those train wrecks in her series. She was a genius, and a superlative talent, but she was a mere mortal, and her voice and manner suffered a great deal from medication, emotional problems and over-work. Lena is in better voice here. That's no slur to Judy.

  • Hardly (as much as I love Judy)

  • well we can agree to disagree

  • @waif55 the balcony in China LMAO!!

  • Part 3 Judy is singing but in a tone of "I know I am in trouble for something". Judy then begins to throw Ms Horne off by signing the wrong line or at the wrong time. Judy is snapping her fingers and giggles and laughs a bit but Ms Horne does not miss a beat and looks Judy right in the eyes, first time they make direct eye contact. Ms Horne may be singing but her deportment tell Judy "Get yourself together" ... scared Judy so much she stopped snapping for a bit but then Judy DID get it together

  • Judy ALWAYS looked at/often touched those with whom she sang; she was a giving, caring performer, and showed respect and warmth in duets. In duets, performers SHARE with each other. Miss Horne, like Miss Merman and a few others, didn't like duets; they sang in "solo" mode and completely avoided eye contact, an attitude which many critics described as "cold" and "aloof." Often insecure, Judy loved singing with others, but singing w/Lena proved to be a challenge, as she had enough ego for three!

  • HUMMM, I absolutely agree that Judy could be a 'hands-on' performer and could certainly effect, in her performances, warmth towards not only performers but the audience as well. However this not the point of my statements as Judy's performance follows her typical pattern. My point is specific to this one performance, between Ms.Horne and Judy, the history surrounding it and why the performance between both performers looks and 'feels" the way it does.

  • It fairly obvious that Judy is trying to do exactly what you feel she does with other performers. What is interesting to me was the reaction of Ms. Horne which was in direct contradiction to Judy's "warmth'. I cannot speak to assertions by critics who you claim found Ms. Horne and Ms. Merman to be cold because none of these critics are named or references provided. I can say simply typing in "Horne Duets" and "Merman Duets" in a YouTube search seems to disagree with their assessment.

  • In the videos listed bellow Ms. Horne sings with from one other performer to about 30 other performers and is anything but cold and very engaging to other performers. There is not one moment of the personality exhibited during the performance with Judy, which only serves to highlight how unusual Ms. Horne's actions to Judy were in this particular segment of the show.

  • Additionally, a search of Ms. Merman reveals the same interaction with other performers and includes performances with Judy and Barbara Streisand. In fact, Merman sings from the audience then joins both Judy and Barbara onstage, hardly a 'cold fish' or someone who seems objectionable to the occasional or frequent duets.

  • Okay your analysis is more than a LITTLE far fetched...

  • HUMMM (again) well yes it was my analysis and seemed, well, fairly obvious. However, it turns out it was not far fetched at all. A YouTube viewer sent me references to two books regarding this show and in each they mention this particular episode with Ms. Horne and Judy and verify what, I felt, was so easy to see. So its less of it being "a LITTLE far fetched ..." and more of it being MORE than well documented --- I mean in addition to being just obvious. (Wink)

  • Part 2 . Judy is trying to make eye contact Immediately but Ms. Horne is having none of it, acting like Judy is not even in the room ...LOL (see time code :51 - 1:07) pretty funny. Finally Ms. Horne must realize she has to give in at some point but pretty much wants to just deck Judy one. Listen to the way she says "SHINE" (check Ms. Horne at 1:06 she really makes a fist sign along with exasperated eyes). Poor Judy is still hanging on and has not been even glanced at yet.

  • Part1 A side note on this performance. Judy rarely could or did show up for her show's rehearsals. Ms. Horne was very professional. She arrived on time and in condition to sing. Not seeing Judy there to rehearse with her and being the host must have really tweaked Ms. Horne. So prior to this song Judy and Ms. Horne have not seen each other or much of each other.

  • Yep,...that's why it was called 'THE LENA HORNE SHOW' !

  • Before hearing that , you can be sure whith Lena and Judy to be on top... 5 stars BEFORE to see...
