I'd say it is because the generation the past 30 years were unable to see Howe in action. So watching Yzerman, grow into the player and captain of his caliber. Thats what makes him the formittable face of Hockeytown
It was really great to have all the Red Wings legends there to be part of the ceremony. Ted Lindsay ranks among the all-time greats of his sport. It is fitting that the award given to the most valuable player as chosen by his peers is renamed in his honor.
While I don't dislike the Red Wings, I'm not an actual fan. But I only say that because, it's still making me really happy to see a city come together over it's hockey team and have a good time and reminisce. Go you guys for your camaraderie. =)
Yzerman is one of my all time favorite players. Superbly talented, but didn't allow his natural talent to affect his work ethic. He could be flashy but never shied away from unglamorous hard work. He was a complete player. If something needed to be done on the ice, he'd be there trying to do it and most of the time succeeding often spectacularly.
Brings tears of joy to my eyes to see the Captain retired. He was One of the Best in Detroit History. Detroit loves you, #19!!! You will ALWAYS be a Red Wing forever!
if anything osgood is fine but no where close to the class of yzaerman, lindstron is right up there they will retire his number, osgood wont get his number retired uhave be a wing ur whole carrer, like the other greats from the 90s with yzerman, for example Gretzky, he plaied every where, but who retired his number?
91 will not be retired. The guy held out almost he entire 98 season and the fashion in which he left the team solidified his status as just a great, not a legend. Lidstrom will be 40 next year, ozzie is only like 37, so i'd assume #5 will be next to be raised
I agree that people should respect his number and it shouldn't be worn, but I don't know that a career cut tragically short truly warrants a full fledged retirement. One thing I respect most about the red wings is they only retired the numbers of thier truly legendary players who were in most cases red wings for life. Then you have something like Colorado retiring Ray Bourque's number, and while he was a legend, he only spent 2 years with them, I think it cheapens it all a bit.
@DrunkSpleen the reason why the Avalanche retired Ray Bourque's Jersey is that he waited 21 Years to Lift the Stanley Cup and he is a Legend....so to have someone else wear the #77 on the Avalanche would take away from what Raymond did that year with the Team....That's why they wanted to honor him and retire his jersey and remember that he was the last one to wear the #77 in an Avalanche jersey
@SlotShot87 federov is one of my favorites but he showed that the team didnt matter......and its unfortunate.... he would have definitely had it retired...
Thank you SO much for posting this. I had to work the night of the ceremony and ended up forgetting to tape it...I was really disappointed to have missed it. I've watched the Wings since the season they lost in the finals to the Devils (when I was 13) and on, so obviously Steve Yzerman means a lot to me. It'll be great when I get a chance to watch these. Thanks again.
datsyuks number will definitely be retired

All due respect to Gordie Howe, but I personally feel as though Stevie Y is the face of the Red Wings. Obviously it's just one humble mans opinion.

Stevie Y is on the Mount Rushmore of Detroit sports. What a classy player, a great player, a great leader. Captain for 20 years. What a guy.
Lidstrom is up there as well. He will be in the rafters in the next ten years.

#91 for federov will be retired before lidstrom's. The guy won mvp in a red wing uni and helped bring the cup back.

Osgood jumped around teams. Lidstrom has been a Red Wing for his entire NHL career. #5 will definitely be retired first, if anything.
