  • One of my most favorite bass lines is Hendrix calling Butch up to jam and them doing "Killing Floor", incredible. Jorma and Jack would jam in their hotel room playing blues. The then were a first act for themselves as Hot Tuna. They loved blues and left the JA that became Starship. Marty Balin was crushed by the death of Janis Joplin, did not sing when JA did 30 seconds over Winterland. Papa John played fiddle. Gracie learned to use PJ type overlays with her voice on Baron Von Tollbooth.

  • It's good song for me, she had a good voice.

  • Yes, it was Joey Covington. Bloomington, MN (a suburb of Minneapolis), May 1970. I remember it like it was yesterday--41 years ago. The next day Marty got busted for possession of MJ in the hotel. Acoustic Hot Tuna played in a small bar venue not 90 minutes away from home in the Spring of 2010. I planned on showing up with my vinyl Surrealistic Pillow and get a couple of signatures but I just couldn't make it. A great disapointment in my life. Go ride the music!!

  • Yes, this song shows Gracie Slick to be a dynamic presence in Jefferson Airplane. But the true genius in this band was Kaukonen/Casady/Dryden and with the possible exception of the opening instrumental of White Rabbit, this is Jorma and Jack and Spencer at their absolute best. I had the great privilege to see JA live but Spencer was unfortunately gone by then. Enjoy!!

  • @spcoz Agreed. Jack Casady is one of my favorite bass players, and ya gotta love Jorma's leads. Was it Covington on drums when you saw them live?

  • still, the best grace vocal ever...

  • Airplane music was always typically loose music but they could get it tight when they wanted to. This is a TIGHT Grace telling it like it is. She's right on the note! I am always thankful when Marty isn't trying to out sing her. and yes Grace, it feels good when somebody gives it to you right!! She's so fine!!

  • @terrikitties Marty always tried to outsing her and failed every time.

  • Vietnam was never so closely tied to a song. "So why not save all the little animals..." all 58,000 of them........

  • I've always loved this song. Gracie brings it home for sure. This was true BLUES! Poor little animals.......
