Cringe, the cameraman used pontificate as a complement, Wallace handled it well, then upon reflection seemed to consider he might be actually coming off pompous. Poor guy.
Why do people cheer when there are no dislikes? Like consensus is gonna tell us what is good? I like the guy too, but i wouldn't be sad if someone didn't and went to the extreme step of clicking on that dangerous icon. Just so funny to me:)
@simonyricools it is haha:P The the thing about this video I like the most is that people who read his book are seemingly susceptible to low IQ trolling attempts like on the first vid someone said: ''lol nerd killed himself'' and farmed many angry responses rofl. Those reactions almost make me me want to re-evaluate what I'm reading if some of its detractors are so.... shall we say: 'pedestrian', it's a snob thing:P
Not entirely sure -apart from total ineptitude- why the camera man butted in the way he did; sure the curtain is gone; but if DFW was "pontificating" and moving -he is moving more out of focus....
The dynamic DFW has with the cameraman in this interview is almost as interesting as what he's saying. If you look at his expression at about 3:05 he looks past the camera and smiles apologetically, maybe because the sound is still awkward, but it's as if the cameraman was pulling a face at the unwanted clarity of his last answer.
the bit where the camera man is so disrespectful and philistine, when the guy's clearly suffering and anxious, it almost made me lol seeing a genius like DFW getting that level of shit. and he was a gent about it!
its funny to see people use pop psychological slogans like "suffers from depression" and act like they understand him when you're the type of person he's viciously mocking
the way he looks at the end of the previous video/beginning of this one expresses more about his sadness than anything else written about it before or since
I think europeans that havent been to the usa have ignorant views. This is intern of how americans are depicted on television. i.e. as stupid money grubbing rednecks.
The 'um, er' that punctuate the interviewer's questions are excruciating. I think I stopped hearing the questions somewhere ten minutes in and just waited for the next 'um' with heavy dread.
The interviewer realy could speak a better english. Sounds like right out of Gymnasium. Why wasnt she accompanied by a translator? Would have been easier for everyone this way.
One of the fundamental fallacies of our society is the tendency to discount the insight of those suffering from depression. Depression isn't as simple as a chemical imbalance. The umbrella term "depression" doesn't begin to cover the layers and nuances that comprise that kind of suffering. Not even compassion is enough to soothe the tormented soul; it takes true understanding and reciprocity. For someone as intellectually alive as DFW - how impossible that must have been, I can't imagine.
@smurfieboo that's very simplistic. americans are devoted to these grammatical ideas that make everyone sound very similar, and we're concerned with words as blocks in a sentence more than the life in words. grammar should be mastered only in order to gain the freedom to escape its strictures at the right moments. the good american writers have known how to punctuate conversational prose--the language spoken by their sets--.with "big words"...
All his interviews are like this. He looks a wreck in this one-- facial hair, shirt choice (not ironed), and oily hair that has not been washed or combed. He is anxious and nervous. Depressives ruminate; his eyes show this process.
@Namely82 you're an idiot, basically. if you'd read jackshit about his work, you'd have some sense of the basic respect he had for other people's inner lives. the reason wallace is so contemplative in his responses is because he's trying to dignify the interviewer's questions with legitimate, meaningful answers.
@IncredibleGoliath Again, you have to know about Df Wallace before you say this. He is not a speaker. He is a very eloquent writer and thinker. Also, he had been on anti-depressants for years, which changed the way he came off in speech. Read his books and then come back to this.
What the FUCK is the camera dude’s problem?

Why does he speak about Americans in a detached manner?
Is he not American? Or is that for the woman?

I believe freedom of choice is slavery in a very commercial society. People need boundaries and disipline in order to live a satisfying life.

@abeeraj Well she's not a native english speaker. But yes she is admittedly kind of underwhelming intellectually for a grad student.
