I can't help but hear a re-occuring theme of: "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen" in this song. I don't know if it's because it's Christmas time or what, but listen really close and see if you hear what I hear.....Love the post!
The subject or "theme" is really close to one of Bach's G minor fugues - but they do a great job making it their own and getting down that syncopation - sort of a neo-baroque that really swings. Closest thing I could find to this is Swingle Singers. Problem is it ends too abruptly.
Here is the Swingle Singers doing their version of swinging Bach -
Why does someone like this patoo 1000 joker feel the need to make that comment? Does he want us all to know how stupid he is? Okay, point made. You're still a child, we get it. Now go listen to something you do get, like maybe Locomotion.
No guys, this ain't merely a strict canon like "On Reflection." Check out the climax on a pedal tone; this is the real deal, a Royal College of Music (Kerry's alma mater) composition-class fugue. Which isn't to say it sounds academic or uninspired, not in the least; it sounds like the great mid-70s Gentle Giant. Somebody said the synths sound cheesy? Dude, they sound *analog*, that's part of what makes it so cool. My only crit is that they could've come up with a better ending.
...after almost 30 years without recording anything, "the boys in the band" or in this case "Three Friends" (Minnear, Green, Weathers) sound fantastic .. It is unfortunate that Shulman brothers not interested in a reunion again ..
The beginning reminds me of the music in 80's videogames... I hate myself for thinking that. And the first three bars or so only. Love this stuff though, never heard it before, thanks for posting it.
Indeed. Very, very few of today's bands can get near the level of performance and writing shown here, yet for these ex-Giant players, supposedly out of their prime, this piece is still just a walk in the park.
@Marcusvdgg71 I wonder when this piece was recorded? Since it's not actually a part of GG's released albums and singles, I'm thinking it's actually very much in the vein of GG's style. Minnear and the boys were excellent musicians who produced quite an eclectic style out of medieval folk, classical, jazz and rock influences.

This sounds wonderful. I bet Bach would have been impressed, But this isn't really a fugue. It is actually a strict canon.

I think the synth sounds are very badly choosen, but the composition itself is a wonderful fugue, very well written. I always loved Gentle Giant.

A very intelligent and well-written fugue by classical standards. And a very groovy track by rock standards. Bravo.

@b0ttomzone Well JS Bach did have something to do with it, remember. :-) Check out Tom Koopman giving BWV 578 a whirl.
