@crunchycrispybacon The crew seems to be from RNoAF. I guess if the plane is owned by them, then money is not a problem:P F-104 have a reputation to be a hard plane to fly.
@jimmythesnagglepuss i think its just the thrust, the old v2's didn't have any wings and the thrust was enough for them. Don't quote me on that though its just what i think
@dave1the1deer1hunter It's not just thrust; though the F-104 has a lot of thrust, it doesn't have enough to support its weight, as many modern fighters do. The F-104 depends on high speed to fly. Its stall speed is around 200 mph, so in effect it must generate a wind well over a Category 5 hurricane to stay flying.
This plane was the most stupid design ever put into service; what some money can't do. It crashed, time after time all over the world (look up the records of the German or Dutch Airforce) and never was a match to fighters of the USSR or similar at the time. It's achivements? A place in a low-cost-museum. To be forgotten, but well payed for by the loss of so many good pilots.
@bernard71000 The F-104's primary mission was fast interception of enemy bombers. It was designed for this role from the start, and it was well suited to this mission. Many other design parameters were left by the wayside in order to create an aircraft that could be up at speed and up at altitude very vast and deliver a few missiles to big lumbering bombers. It was never meant to be a dogfighter, so comparing it to other fighters is not useful. But I agree - many crashes, hard to fly, limited.
@Tsiniastje Don't they start signaling by 20%? Cause most engines are spooled up to 20% before fuel is ignited. 1 finger: 20%, 2 fingers: 30%, 3 fingers: 40% and 4 fingers 50%
Screw the 104! I want the NEAT little truck :)

Can you guys afford to fly it, or do you just drive it to the airport bar and back?

Thank you espenjoh for this video. I have worked first at this aircraft engine tech. for 1980 in Balıkesir-Turkey.

I still have no idea how this thing flys - those wings just seem so tiny

Is the pilot signaling percent RPM numbers to the ground start crew?
rickey5353 2 years ago 5
@rickey5353 Yes: every finger is 1.000 rpm, so at 4.000 the engine is self sustaining.
