@BSRobbie You don't take a policy out on every object you own... You take a blanket policy to cover the cost to replace your belongings in the event of a fire/flood/break-in/etc. If you can't afford insurance, you probably can't afford the apartment. Do you drive without insurance? 99.9% of banks won't let you have a car with a loan out on it and not have full coverage. Just cover your ass and pay for the insurance. If you never use, consider yourself lucky. Better safe than sorry.

Even if he has some form of insurance it doesn't really matter anymore because he has no legal documents to even prove that he's himself anymore. You can't use insurance as a back up in this situation, that's not how it works.

However, there is renter's insurance which covers the possessions of the renter, not the owner (the owner has homeowner's insurance which covers the structure). As for not proving who he is, we had a flood and lost all our documentation, all you have to do is contact your birth hospital or the DMV, etc. to get proof of who you are.

People need to share the info with him on those ways to get his documents and he should also contact the appropriate local resources to help him out.

That sucks to hear! I too have lost most of everything I own. I have but a few pairs of clothes and my busted car, it is a tough situation but I take it day by day and keep my head up as best as possible. Best wishes to your friend Greg.

Greg wouldn't scam us and even if he had insurance, it's gonna take a while to get things together and for the claim to process. I'd say send what you can now. If your still skeptic, just think that sending money in this first week would be a true help! I had a friend in a similar situation and it took FOREVER for the claim to process and for the state help to kick in!

Is the apartment not insured? I pay for apartment insurance and I'm sure the owner of the apartment has her own insurance too. I feel bad for this guy but I'm sure he's not starting from scratch. A healthy check from the insurance is heading his way if he doesnt have it already and there is a lot of local help too.
