  • IR, infrared. Not RF, that's radio frequency.

  • Lol its the same shit.

  • I like the old macbook pro Design

  • Hey, this kid did his best to do a comparison video. Give him some credit and stop bashing his video!

  • Both are penryn.

  • i love the old one :L i miss ya 2008 macbook pro :'(

  • in all ways, the new macbook pro is much better than the old one. i think you know that but trying to avoid the reality. just admit it

  • I love my early 2008 macbook pro 15", fuck the 2009/2010 ones, but man the 2011 ones are fucking insane! :)

  • The design hasn't changed greatly? Lol. NEXT. Yer vid is biased and sucky. Your old MBP is fine, but don't kid yourself.... kid.

  • What do you mean by Penryn?

  • @The1970sInfatuate "Penryn" was the codename of the particular generation of Core 2 Dou processor that the early 2008 (non-unibody) model used (which is the model that I still use daily).

  • Very helpful vid, nice breakdown, wish I could merge both designs have the best of both worlds.

  • I went back to my Penyron and am selling my unibody. I love the old style better. Everything works great and the battery lasts longer than the unibodies. Actually allot of locals like the older style better. If I could find one brand new and cherry in the box I'd buy it.

  • i dont get it. so you recommend us to replace the Harddrive with the power on? huh?

  • @Desmonddd2002 seriously! wtf?

  • the 2010 mbp 15 doesnt have a user replacable battery

  • even fast XD lol

  • Thanks good watch, you new unibody is way ahead I reckon

  • This was a very helpful video for me. I needed to know which model type I have, in order to get some repair parts, and this video was exactly what I needed.

  • The matt screen on the Penryn is much less reflective which I prefer. Also the Penryn's speakers are a lot louder! My boss had to borrow mine for a presentation (he has the Unibody) because his was far too quiet. The keyboard is much better on the Penryn as well. I could by a new Macbook pro tomorrow if I wanted but for now I'm sticking with the Penryn! I think Apple have just found a way to produce it cheaper and more efficiently but it's not necessarily a better product.

  • no offence u look like me on halloween

  • You are unable to afford macbook? There is giveaway at macbook7 . com You can get one NOW

    like it

  • What fan controller/ temp. monitor are you using?

  • What is the unibodys specs?

  • butt sex

  • for some reason i like the older macbook pro

  • @amberasamber Yea me too, and I just got a 15'' off ebay for $650!

  • @InterestingChild

And i got mine with photoshop cs5, a 250 GB upgrade and a magic mouse for 900 euros, and it´s the penderin one (i like it better because that black thing is kinda ugly and i still use infrared remotes for multimedia and the other one was too expensive, and the old one has almos the same specs)

  • @amberasamber

Me too I think the design of the old macbook pro is much better.

  • no offense but ur whole video just seems like you wish you had the new one and were doing pointless test to try and make yourself feel better, the new one is better in almost every way look at the benchmarks ps you didnt say anything about the led display

  • @ropguitar1 He's just showing that there wasn't a terrible difference between the two systems, it was an unbiased review. He pointed on some highlights for both systems. He did miss some important things like the trackpad being multi-touch. The LED display was already shipping in the older macbook pros since late 2006. I have the original 'core duo' macbook pro that shipped early 2006 and it's the only one that used CCFL. It is junk by todays standards but still very reliable and useful.

  • do u wish u had the new 1?

  • If the old one had the trackpad that the new one has, I would prefer it.

  • the new one sucks because all the ports are on the left, so if you plug in a mouse then the cord has to come all the way around , if you are right handed, which 90% of people are, then this sucks.

  • @GabeZTV I'm left handed, and I still use a mouse right handed..even my trackpad lol

  • The new unibody is way more curvy! The older design is ok, but the keyboard is a little bit too incompatible with the design!

  • i just love the design of the old one!

  • According to tests I have done the spaced keys type faster

  • thanks for the vid !

  • The reviewer is obviously jealous over his friends new MacBook Pro unibody.

  • I have the old macbook pro but i want the new one idk something about just makes me want one maybe the keyboard?

  • what app tells you the temp and fan speed and power usage?

  • @mrwireful10000 smc fan control xD

  • Comment removed

  • nice vidéo

  • damn your ugly

  • i have the old macbook pro and i love it and i prefer it over the new macbook pro

  • My white late 2009 MacBook unibody has 5502 mAh. That's more than the Unibody MacBook Pro!

  • how do you check the core temp, while its processing things and all the other stuff you had on your tab?

  • Thank you for this comparison. Very useful..

New Unibody looks brigter for me. I want to send my windows out and found a new possibility to using computer..

  • I have a unibody MBP too but I prefer the aesthetics of the old Macbook Pros and Powerbooks. The black keyboard and screen surround make the unibody look like a Sony Vaio.

  • Good comparison, I want to buy a Penryn MBP from ebay, I always liked the cosmetics.

  • nvm, i just had time to actually watch the video., lol thanks anyways.

  • how long does the battery on the newer macbook last?

  • they say on their site that the macbook pro gets about 7 hours.

with brightness on half, and using normal, everday use, i got about 5 and a half hours (and about 3 hours of sleep time)

  • I have the Unibody, but I almost like the Penryns a tad more!

  • my macbook pro is not like the new one i cant see the battery and i don't have an express port maybe because i bought it before 2 months

  • kingston lock xD

  • great comparison buddy!

  • Hey can you tell me how to get all that info in the toolbar?

  • Yes can anybody tell us, please?

  • thanks for this video

  • Penryn is just a codename of an Intel processor. The MBPro also uses Penryn chips.

  • ha owned.

  • @rihanna72 Well now in 2011, they use Sandy Bridge Processor

  • Great review! I'm going to carry on with my MacBook Pro Penryn classic until Apple do something spectacular.

You just saved me about £1400 or alternatively you just cost Apple £1400.

  • It ran cooler on the unibody because you didnt have the discrete card.

and the battery isnt using the power.... thats how much power is being drawn from the battery T_T

  • the unibody macbook uses penryn too?

  • same performance?? i dont think so the unibody has the geforce 9600m gt i think that will impact on the performance

  • maybe 10% if that

  • 10%? with what benchmark stats? the performance gap would differ greatly especially playing games or application that require graphics power

  • Nope, look it up the 9600 is essentially just a revision of the 8600 which runs cooler but otherwise comparable, google it ^^

  • Nice review. This should notify people about the changes between the older version of the MBP and the Unibody version.

  • do you own both of these computers?

I really love the new macs. I'll get one when they're up for redesign. Though I love the new design.

  • -.-

Skip to 5:22 and listen to what he says, for the answer to your question.

  • hey look its harry potter

  • lol ur an asshole

  • how do you get all that info on the toolbar?

  • istat menus

  • Thanks Mate!

  • great review i have the unibody macbookpro.i got it a few months ago

  • its not a rf sensor its ir lol just a heads up not trying to make fun of u or anything

  • best review ive seen on this topic

  • I've the Early 2008 Pro, and I'm loving it. Somehow, the over-engineered feel of the older one is brilliant, compared to the strictly bare bones new one.. Like how the hooks on the lid are brought down by magnets as it gets closer to the body and then finally latches on. Feels a bit like the Mercedes's of the 1960's-70's :)

  • great job!!! I have the old one))

  • Good review, idk, I really like the design of the new macbooks.

  • the new one looks goo, but the old is better

  • i like older

  • i think old pacbook pros keyboard looks better then unibody

  • I used to have the Penryn one and it was a great machine but I sold it and got me a Macbook unibody because I wanted a lighter notebook. The thing I loved about the Penryn a lot was the backlit keyboard which would turn on during in a low light condition and turn off when light came out. With these unibodies while there's light the backlit keyboard stays on unless a lot of light enters and then the lights wlll turn off. The screen on the unibody are much better.

  • the reason for higher consumption and temp on the macbook penryn, is due to the "permanent" 8600GT graphic card, where the Unybody has both an integrated GF 9400 and a 9600GT available.

Obviosuly for power saving the 9400 integrated card is way better but also way slower.

Be sure to have the unibody running on the 9600GT and check the new results

  • kensington lock

  • The app is iStat ;)

  • its way nicer

  • Really good comparison vid, nice thorough testing. I do definatley prefer the newer MBP my is coming in about 3 weeks yay! :)

    Thanks.

  • how do you get that heat application i have to know please message me back

    thanks

  • i love the classic design of the white macbook and the "pendryn" mbp

  • i kinda like the old one!!!! i only want apple to just put the magnetic thing instead of the lock and just keep it like that! apple, please make the old macbook pro avalible!

  • thats the 2008 model the 2009 models is much better

  • hi i'd like to know the name of those aplications that you used in this video right on the top of the screen to calculate heat battery volts performace. I'll aprecciate if you could share that with us.

  • yeah me too.. it looks very useful and friendly...

interesting post by the way (i mean the video)

  • i love the old macbook pro..it's classic hardcore portable computer..

  • Is the temperature in F or C?

  • The aluminum is better at conducting heat you pleeb

  • nice is the unibody one the 17 inch?

  • Comment removed

  • no it not

  • Well he has 2

the 1st is called smc fan control(it also controls your cooling fans)

the other one is called iStat menus it opens in system preferences.

  • I guess someone making a million dollars a year won't have any problems buying one of these

  • fuk you,i earn 25000 pounds a year and i bought it

  • showing your face ruined the video

  • It's McLovin'!

  • HAHAH, thought the same thing!

    but nice comparison tho!

  • @Zeldafreak5

    hahahahahaha

  • @Zeldafreak5 lol xD

  • the reason that the MacBook Pro unibody is cooler is because it the unibody serves as an effective heat-sink

  • I need some help making a decision about upgrading a macbook pro. hope you guys can help..

    I have a 2006 macbook pro 1.83 ghz, 2GB 667 MHz DDr2 SDRAM, 80GB hardrive.

I know I have to upgrade real soon, but should i do it now or wait till next year for the next macbook pro?

And how much do you think I could sell mine for now compared to later? Any help is appreciated, and great video by the way

  • there shouldnt be a new one....go ahead and do it...apple just released the newer ones. i would wait on an iMac if you were going to get that. but hurry on the macbook pro before its to late.

  • all u bitches saying he's biased just can't take any kind of crticism.

he made both positive and negative comments for both.

this video was exactly what i needed to hear. i still think the newer 1 is better but i'm going 2 buy the penryn.

anyone out there use the penryn for video editing? how is it?

    Great Review by the way!

  • First, I had the Penryn and now I have the Unibody. I am about to trade in the Unibody for another Penryn. What I like about the Penryn: typing, matte screen, latch to open, key illumination, speakers.

What I like about the Unibody: it doesn't get as hot. I love the penryn so much more and I would recommend it to anybody over the Unibody. New does not always mean better... GOOD JOB on getting the Penryn. I think that you will be more satisfied... CAUTION: It does get hot enough to cook eggs..

  • u can get a refurb unibody for around 1600 plus

  • wow hes jelous of his friend couse he dosent have the unibody

  • he is just jelous that his freind has a better and newer mac book pro than him and that is why he says there the same what a freak and did u guys see his face uggghhhhh hes gay

  • how did u get those heat stats on the top of your mac?

  • with a freeware called istat pro

  • you said kingston lock its kensington lock

great video i accidently rated it one star but its 5/5 :P

  • Nice video man,

Personaly I have a white macbook and i'm saving money for a Macbook pro but honestly I love these two macbook pro, i'm not sure wich one to buy, well if I buy the old one it will probably be on ebay or refurbished from apple because they don't sell them anymore.

Well the 13 inch macbook pro looks really nice to me too.

  • Nice video therevivedone

    5/5

  • nice review body!!

  • I have to say that the Penryn version is the way to go. The glossy screen looks great if you're just using it for email and web stuff, but it reflects way too much if you're a pro using Final Cut, Aperture or any other photo or video app. Matte screens are much better for that on a laptop. The new track pad, DDR3 and slightly faster processor are nice but not enough to justify an upgrade to a unibody MBP.

  • really awesome review man!

  • Considering how young you are, I was very impressed by your review...

Also, a personal note: I also have to agree that the early 08 MBP's tend to run a little hot at times (though never at 70 degrees I don't think), and I whip out smc_fancontrol and crank up the rpm's so I cool down the computer quickly.

If I didn't get my MBP for cheaper due to it being the last generation model, I love the look of the new MBP's.

  • Mine gets above 70 all the time. SMC Fan Control is just going to kill your fans faster if you run them high all the time. Save the life of your fans and let the MacBook Pro's aluminum conduct the heat.

  • I pretty much do that without complaints, but once or twice when I'm booted into Windows and playing a game (Killing Floor, to be specific), my MacBook has gotten so hot the game begins throwing out models to try and give the CPU a break, and eventually the game becomes unplayable. I crank my RPM's to about 5000 when I play Killing Floor to avoid this. When in OSX (though granted, the only game I play in OSX is either CS Source or 1.6) its rarely a problem and I let the computer do its thing.

  • lol mine heats up in OS X, in fact, the only way I can tell is in OS X with iStat Menus, I have no idea how to check the temperature in Windows besides feeling and based on experience. In OS X, I play COD4 and some other racing games and they all heat up the system. Watching HD videos on Youtube kicks it past 70 as well. It's mostly the Nvidia Geforce 8600M GT doing the heating. The Geforce 9400M doesn't make much heat, like in this video. But the 9600M does.

  • Something about photoshop performance?

  • there is prejudice in your video

  • You know, if your older MBP is indeed older, accumulated dust on fans and the heatsink could easily be the answer to the difference in heat. It matters a lot.

  • I bought the early 2008 macbook pro version in Hong kong in july 2008 (!!) and I don't regret it at all!!

I love the old version!!! (this is/ was a hardcore windows user speaking)

    The new ones are UGLY!

  • The new ones are UGLY? Are you joking? The old ones look so plain and dull compared to the new ones.

  • Well, that's a matter of taste if the new ones are ugly or not. But I must say, besides my opinion that they are UGLY, that the trackpad is extremely unhandy (again: personal opinion).

  • Would have been much more impressive (and less biased) if you showed the progress bar up close on your old Macbook seeing as the new unibody macbook was shredding through the video at approx double the speed and using less power to do so.

  • You didn't mention the NVIDIA graphics - That must be a selling point

  • WOW it must've been really cool when you took this vid. On my Unibody Macbook Pro it gets to around 65 watching a HD movie. Mind you this is with the INTEGRATED GRAPHICS. So I would imagine that it would be even hotter with the discrete one.

  • you meant IR "port"

  • it looks like you are just a little bias towards the old macbook pro!

  • obviously because it is what he owns

aluminum macbook pro = better :D

  • Dude, this review was really nice.

Btw, you look JUST like a friend of mine.

  • macbook pro penryn rock!!! i would take it over unibody ANYDAY. the new macbook pro look like 15 inch macbooks. And i know the difference between pro and macbooks so i'm not a clueless consumer. Gray quiet keys and unique design from the macbook pro

  • we're picking a laptop by its looks now? the unibody macbook is much more improved. DD3! faster processor ... graphics card ... do i need to continue?

  • ugh the difference between ddr3 and ddr2 are barely noticeable i would actually profer ddr2 because its wayyyyyyyyyyy cheaper to upgrade

  • barely noticeable?!?! are you serious?

  • well yeah except for the insane prices ddr3

  • it's also faster ... and can hold more

  • I hear MBP's aren't gonna have removable batteries come this winter (like the 17"). They'll also have faster CPU's, USB 3.0, and Snow Leopard.

  • Great indepth review but you made one MAJOR mistake. It has to do with the settings the Unibody Macbook Pro was on (The discrete graphics were not enabled) which explain why it uses less power. Other than that great review, I think your jealous about your friend's laptop xD

  • good point.

but the older mb doesn't have that option.

so it's a good example anyways.

i'm on an early 2008 2.5 mb pro.

it's can get warm but not too bad.

but when i'm running vista through bootcamp it cooks.

  • well done...thanks makes me know that having the old one aint 2 bad

  • fantastic review, excellent job.

  • Thanks for watching!

  • First of all, I want to thank you for such a great video! its the best review about comparing

Im about to buy a macbook pro 17" nowadays. I have some financial issues, & if it really doesnt worth, I dont wanna pay so much extra money for the New one.

I do graphic design&web development. I can not upgrade laptop every year. Do you think I will not feel to upgrade the old macbook pro for 3 years from today? or better to go for new macbook pro today because of I plan to use 3 years from today?

  • If I were you, I would save some money and buy the previous generation macbook pro. I too plan to keep my laptop for three years, at least, and I trust my machine to keep up with my needs for that time frame.

  • Thanks a lot :) your this video and your comment have really important position for me to decide about which Macbook Pro I decide on. I will go for the previous generation :)

Ps, what do you think about refurbished?

    Thanks again!! :)

  • I'm glad I could help. As for refurbished macs, I think they are a great bargain. You get a lower cost mac while keeping the amazing support apple has come to posses. Right now if you go to the apple refurb store, you can find a nice 17in macbook pro for $1899 with the upgraded display. I'm sure that will be perfect for you.

Please keep me informed on how this process goes for you.

    Michael

  • What app is that? the one that measures your hardware temp and speed? Thanks.

  • iStatMenus :)
