There are 2 things that still annoy me about Veron's time in Old Trafford. We bought a world superstar and asked him to play in a position requiring speed he didn't and would never have. He was made for 4-3-3. Then our supporters started to believe the "flop" tags written by lazy football journalists who needed something to say. He's a temperamental bloke and it really upset him when fans thought he was a flop. Utd supporters should stick up for their players.

@mattos000 I don't complain about Fletcher or Park who are superb but I complain about Carrick because he has got superb technical ability, yet seems to have as much confidence as you would expect had he been locked away by Fritzl himself for the past 5 years. Just looks devoid of confidence and character and his play reflects that.

Quite fun reading all the press coverage from the time nearly a decade on. So many pundits said there was no chance of failure (one guy on the BBC said Veron's style was "made for the Premiership") and United would easily romp to the title now they had the 'new Cantona'.

i agree he came at the wrong time. fergie replaced jaap stam with laurent blanc which was a bad move. united just couldnt defend. conceded 10 goals in first 6 games + fergie changed the entire team shape + he and scholes were too similar (gerrard/lampard?) scholes was in peak. keane was captain.

He just came to United at a bad time. In Giggs, Scholes, Keane and Becks; we had the best midfield in Europe. There was no room for Seba. In 00/01 we desperately needed a defender. Instead we bought an attacking midfielder. How could SAF drop a peaking Scholes for Veron? Instead he tried to shoehorn Seba into the midfield by playing Scholes out on the left/behind Ruud or put Veron on the right and drop Becks. It didn't work. But when Seba was played in the centre he was nearly always immense.

Your wrong about a few things.

First United fans weren't harsh on Seba. I've not met one United fan who doesn't wish it had have worked out. He should have spent the best years of his career at United

But - he struggled to adapt to the pace in the premiership AND he found it difficult playing with keane because they both need to dominate

Honestly, I was heartbroken when we sold him as he SHOULD have been Uniteds Zidane but we wish him well and remember him fondly

Veron is now in Estudiantes de La Plata, in 3 years he won the championship, the libertadores cup and now he is going to defeat barcelona in dubai, to be the world club champion!

The English media were unfair on Veron, but to say Man Utd fans didn't like him is wrong. He was loved by Utd fans, and we were all sad to see him leave. We could do with a player like Veron right now. He is simply one of the best there is.

Veron is the type of player that has only recently started to be appreciated in this country.

He wasn't a tough tackler like Keane or a 20 goal a season man like Scholes. He basiclly did a similar job as what Carrick does now i.e recive the ball from the defence look up and pass to the attackers.

Accrpss Europe thoes player are invaluable to their teams (Xavi and Pirlo are 2 that come to mind)

It's only in the past 2 or 3 season that thoese type of players have statred to get some praise.

i was gutted the day we sold Veron..the day before in a pre season game he had played one of the best passes i have ever seen. He needed another season but just wasnt compatible with the midfielders we had, especially Keane. He never really got the chance to shine and play his best position..dont understand why sir alex ever spent that sort of money on a player he never really gave a big chance

Veron scored some cracking goals for united, his passing was second to none. He was just to slow for the prem. Overall he did quite good. The 01-02 season was strange season for us, we had to contend with a different shape to the team, attacking wise we were brilliant that season. We couldn't defend though. In 02-03 fergie reverted back to the original shape with solsjaer and van nistelrooy and we won the league. Veron was south American player of the year last year at age 33!!

juan sebastian veron was a terrific player for manchester united. It was just that united at the time was not good enough especially roy keane, laurent blanc, and mikael silvestre. The main problem was united could not accomodate scholes and veron in the midfield.

Keane was one of the best box to box midfielders of his generation. He could have got more goals but none the less he was absolute quality.

Keane before he has that hip injury, you constantly see him up front during attacks, and back defending. Gerrard is a box-to-box. Scholes was at his prime, but now he lacks the stamina to do so.

Problem was that we had too many static/slow midfielders/players in general during that period. I mean with beckham (whom after his injury was not good cept for his free kicks), Ruud (couldnt do anything besides score goals), Blanc, etc; by adding Veron who lacked the physical strength to create the space necessary for his style to be successful, only spelt disaster for us during that time period.

Everytime I read an article on Juan Sebastian Veron and his time at Old Trafford it's always the same bullshit, he had brief moments of glory but never really lived up to expectations, struggled with adapting to the English style blah blah blah etc etc... But funnily enough, everytime I speak with a United fan or any English person for that matter, they hold Seba in such high regards. The general consensus is that Seba formed part of a near perfect team and simply did his job at Utd.

But United fans recognize class and that is why most fans won't say anything bad about it. Most are just disappointed it didn't work out. If it had, we would not have sold him obviously...
