Akshay Kumar is my favourite actor and by far the best action hero in Bollywood ever. Salman is also good and has his legion of fans. In 2007 Akshay had four releases which all were out and out blockbusters. In 2008 he had the biggest hit of the year - "Singh is Kinng". As far as comparing films with Salman goes, that's just a matter of opinion. I think Khakee was better than any Salman film but I don't expect anyone else to think the same.
regarding critical acclaim akshay did wonderful neagtive role in ajnabee which he got filmfare and iifa awards, khakee is better than any sallu films from last decade, acclaim in comic roles, family drama, akki's success record beats every actors from last decade ifyou take above average, average into account.

Akki was the best physical action hero and pure athlete but his athleticism got him nowhere near what sunny deol experienced with his dialogues and scorching screen presence, on the whole sunny deol had the better action films aswell. Ghayal, Ghatak, Ziddi etc are among the finest action films in bollywood.

@RockAustinDXtakerRk0 akki had flops but also he had a good run from 1994 till 1996, he gave 7 hits if u check the BO sites, Khiladi, Mohra, Main Khiladi Tu Anari, Sabse bada Khiladi, Khiladiyon ka khiladi, dil to pagal hai and Jaanwaar. most of these were solo starrers, but he didn't get the superstar tag. also he was the number 1 male actor to be in magazine cover, and faveourite pair for all the leading ladies for mag shoot.

@westminister09 yea no doubt akshay was good in the 90's but all im pointing out is that he wasn't as big of a star as the rest of his co-stars and colleagues his box office stature was cemented in 2007, before then he stil gave hits every now and then. Akki may have been on mag covers idk but salman was reknowned as best looking superstar of the 90's and his jodi with madhuri created craze like no other.
