Guys - I am the inventor of the Hyboo. Just so you know, I was with the Dragons for at least 30 minutes during the shooting and they were very polite and helpful with their recommendations. However, you cannot change your pitch in the middle. Therefore I played the game. However, the production team created a montage that made me look like a stubborn guy who was insisting on doing everything himself... The “baby” comment was said as a joke at the end and they took it out of context

Too many brilliant men can't bare the thought of licencing a brilliant design and end up losing everything. Like the dragons said, its made people lose families, and everything else they've had. I disagree with the dragons often but they were bang on with this one.

@minnescanada Just remember what licencing and royalties are all about. The problem with this deal is that if the company that now owns the rights for lets say 10-15 years or permanently decides to not produce it for whatever the reason you get nothing or, depending on the contract, a fixed amount of money. Bearing in mind the negotiating power they got at the point of the drafting of the contract, the fixed amount will be insignificant. That' s why many good businessmen hate royalty agreements!

This reminds me of the Uno. It's the same scenerio, the inventor was okay with licencing the Uno and taking a 7% cut. The Dragon's really admired him for seeing the value for a fraction in one million units sold rather then trying to sell units directly to the Singapore, South Asian market.

The scenerio that guy should have thought about was, "would I rather like to own a business around my product, or rather seeing 300 000 Hyboo's on Canadian Hwys next year?"

I totally agree, licensing is a way to go.

Manufacturing will cost labor, raw material, management, and then finding retailers to sell. Then marketing efforts to retailers etc., warranty issues. Engineering issue. The GUY is CRAZY. The dragons are right. He go bankrupt sooner than he can make money.
