How about we give Sega another chance. They remake this game with better gameplay, and personally, I will not be offended if the call it Sonic Adventure 3. It's got good story, characters, and one of the best villains the series has ever seen hands down. Not to mention that you got to play as pretty much every character in the game.

Think about it this way, Ibilis is the flame and Mephiles is the smoke of said flame. Even if the flame was blown out it still existed at one point, thus it would have given off a little smoke. That smoke being the smallest fragment of Mephiles could merge with smoke from other flames and form a different but similar Mephiles over time. Thus he could return...Someday...

@Tortferngatr I don't know if Sega's going to do that. Mind you, Sonic 2006 is often regarded as one of THE worst Sonic the Hedgehog games in the series. Sega probably doesn't want a reminder that it ever made that game.

Plus, the game basically retconned itself and Solaris out of existence, so there's no point in making a character that doesn't exist the villain of what Sega probably hopes will be its magnum opus.

Although it would be awesome if Mephiles cameos or is a bonus boss..
