  • My 2010 does not make this sound. Didn't they redesign the cam for VVT in the 2009 models?

  • does that thing have a belt tensor? mine went bad made same noise.

  • Mine ticks also. Js. But I still love the Hemi.

  • ya know this really sucks. The Challenger is such a good looking car. In my wildest dreams, i cant imagine why DODGE would not do something...anything to fix this ticking noice. I just searched GOOGLE, and...oh my. its all over the Dodge forums too. man, it just goes to show,, that they have been aware of the issue, and they still pump out 5.7's year after year, with no mods. I had to laugh, watching Mega Factories: Challenger. the chief guy in mexico, said they are made to such 'high standards'

  • @dannnylaws53 but the noise doesn't mean it is a problem. How many people said there engine was ruined from the tick? If its just a noise its ok. To me its like saying a drag car is broken because it idles rough. Ford explorers had a similar tick sound, and it was from the lifters. But it wasn't a problem, they were just loud. I wouldn't let a noise sway me from buying a car if i knew it wasn't a problem. GM makes crap trucks every year, but people buy them!

  • @hamtrak real Americans dont care about MPG!

  • Mine goes away after a while but yeah mine does the same thing.

  • There are annoying voice. And there is no sign of chek ingine!?! Told me people as possible from the reel bobring!?! Beep!?!

  • @FrenchValleyAirport, Ya I put a bottle of STP injector cleaner in once a month to keep em clean, as far as the tick goes that is the sound of the solenoid opening and closing to let the fuel into each cylinder.

  • Mine does it too, it is the injectors.

  • @hemiram1988 will injector cleaner fix it?

  • 2004 ram 5.7. warm or cold its not a quick rapid tick like that its more of an individual slower well defined tick. almost sounds like the serpentine belt going around. any idea?

  • the problem here is that you bought a ram without a cummins in it

  • Yeah, its not a Hemi thing, its a Dodge thing. My Dakota 4.8 does the same thing, but it doesnt really bother me though...

  • If your planning on a chip its a bad idea unless your super charged or turboed, If your not use a programmer, otherwise your throwing your money away.

  • @wittev09876 Like a Bully Dog?

  • @joshua6200 ya like a bully dog or superchips really anybrand that makes a chip they will have a programmer aswell,

  • Ever think in could be multi displacement? 5.7s are supposed to idle with 4 cylinders.

  • @jpmoney384 that's %100 wrong, it only cuts down when your cruising at a steady speed about 35-60 mph

  • i have an 08 hemi with 60,000 k and it just started to tick yes ive only had it 3 years and put 60,000 on it waiting for warenty to run out then exaust superchip coldair and a litttle more

  • pfffft @bizeliven I just cracked one in my 09 ram the other day.

  • not hemi, dodge tick. Had a 5.2l that sounded like marbles in the valve cover when cold. and my current 3.7l has it every once in a while too.

  • I have an '04 Durango with a Hemi and sometimes it ticks sometimes it doesn't, sometimes it's LOUD sometimes it's faint...wtf.

  • Never, ever gonna buy another dodge in my lifetime again. The motors are junk and as far as I know theres a class action suit involving cracked heads in the HEMI. Happened to me twice.

  • @bizelivin hemi's are the strongest gas motor you can buy, never heard of any cracked heads

  • @bizelivin

Cracked heads in a Mopar engine is nothing new. The older Magnum motors are infamous for that .. the 318 and 360's. But chrysler never did shit about it.

  • is this tick normal cause i have the 2010 ram truck and yeah you could hear that tick i first tought it was a defect but i guess i was wrong if theres anyone out there is this normal

  • @exonerone ya it's normal every 5.7 hemi has a tick

  • @exonerone I have a 2006 ram 1500 with the 5.7 hemi an yes it is normal all the hemi motors do this it is normal it is caused by the valves opening an closing the tick is nothing more then them not sealing 100% 9 chances out of 10 your fine but some have play in the walls that the valves sit in an it WILL cus them to drop if the sound increases an cuz it to run rough an loose power

  • Do u have any type of after market headers on your truck ? If so did it make the ticking noise louder ?

  • Mobil 1 ticks. Amsoil ticks after a while. Eneos ticks after 2000+ miles. Royal Purple has no tick until it's close to oil change and then it's only when you first start it. Put good oil in it. My 6.1 and 5.7 both show the same results.

  • Dodge V8's tend to get this sound, always have. They'll still run forever though.

  • what do you mean hemi tick its the dodge tick every dodge i ever heard has it

  • @812deerslayer .....YEP, SURE DOES! I HAVE 2002 RAM WITH THE 4.7 & IT HAS A SLIGHT TICK

  • @Kiddro22 yeah my dad has a 2004 4.7 dakota with a slight tick

  • what happened to the color of your truck....

  • what is that hydro or nitro intjection

  • thats not normal, mine had a tick at 80k and found two broken ex manifold studs

  • well at least the exhaust still sounds bad ass

  • cough* cough* dont buy dodges *cough* cough*

  • Nice nitrous setup haha, what shot you running?

  • im sure its a decent motor, but it sure looks ugly

  • did it start at so many miles or has it always had it?

  • it could be a bad value or rocker arm just take off the value cover and check each rocker arm and the lifters

  • nice nitrous system!! I wonder if it could have burned valves??? exhaust sound good what system is that??

  • @hoffer55 Pull valve covers pull each rocker shaft and inspect pushrods/rockers replace the worn ones with new. Pushrods run about $1 each and rocer shafts are about $45 In the USA In Canada prices are roughly double.

Just be sure to unbolt the rocker shafts incrementally so as not to distort them. it is fairly staright forward could swap all pushrods and 4 rocker shafts in an afternoon. The torque for the rocker shafts is: 22NM or 16 ft lbs Center, center-right, center-left, right, left.

  • My truck started with this exact same racket and I am not the type to accept it as normal. I tore the entire top end down and found on the drivers(left) side 2 worn intake pushrods and one worn exhaust rod. this of course wore out those rockers.

That is 100% the cause of my noise and you may want to pop valve covers remove the rocker shafts and take a look at your pushrods.

I replaced the entire top end anyhow. heads, cam, lifters, pushrods, timing chain and shafts

  • My truck is starting to do the same damn thing, so is this ok??

  • @Tim19861986 ohhh hell no

  • @7bloodred9 alos i have never heard about dodge rearends exploding nor their power stearing units leaking.

  • its not a valve clearance issue its a pushrod length issue, and it almost goes away completely if you put in 6.1 pushrods in it.

  • If you turn EGR of with a predator the tick goes away. Kinda nice...but lose a few MPG

  • Run 15-40 Shell Rotella or Mobil Delvac oil, I guarantee it will quiet it up a lot, might not go away completely, but it's a great oil for gas or diesel and it's cheap.

  • @Mcroostr Rotella has WAY to much detergnt for gas engines !!!!!

  • sounds just like mine and it had the tick since day one too.....it had 60 something miles on it when i first got it now has 91k and it still ticks i'm way past on the warranty already so i guess i'm out on taking it to the stealership

  • i have a 2004 ram 1500 rumblebee with the hemi..it ticks just like yours buddy..so annoying..i tried all of those so called quiet engine noise additives to no avail...strange sometimes as the tick varies in loudness..sometimes you can barely hear it then most of the time you can really hear it...i love the truck but this sound aggravates me

  • I have an 03 hemi ram that has ticked from day one with 54 miles on the truck. It now has 82k, still ticks no motor problems though.

  • Hey man, if I could add my $0.02:

    1. If it is a con-rod it will be more noticeable when the engine is dropping back to idle speed after a rev to 2500rpm.

    2. Fuel injectors. When I wrenched on Dodges I couldn't believe how much noise the injectors made.

    3. Accessory drive. I have seen a defective or worn out belt mimic some very expensive engine noises. Try squirting water on the idler pulley to wet the belt and see if the noise goes away.

  • They still haven't pinned it down for sure but a couple buddies of mine had theirs in for it and the dealer replaced both heads and said it was exhaust valves.

  • i was told that the sound is a loose exhaust pushrod on these motors i have one as well and that tick drives me nuts
