During the closing ceremony, the monks dismantle the Mandala, sweeping up the colored sands to symbolize the impermanence of all that exists. The mixed sand is distributed to the audience as blessings for personal health and healing.
Holy jealous crap! What I wouldn't give to see these guys brawl with some lazy "artists" like Warhol or Pollock or Kleiner. Assuming they were all still alive.
I'm doing a lesson plan on this right now (future teacher).
What blows my mind is that traditionally, after Tibetan monks complete one of these...they destroy them. They sweep them up and collect them into an urn which is then blessed in a healing ritual, taken to a body of water, and dispersed in the water.
They believe the effort and healing ritual put into the art is energy that the water will spread around the world.
OMG... I would really like to see them personally when they will make another one like this. I love their discipline. :)

Poor choice of words. They sweep up the design and place it's energy elsewhere.
