76,048 hits!? I'd abandoned this YouTube account because I couldn't be bothered to set up a Google account to continue using it. Now I'm back! Glad so many people think it's funny. SHVOOOOOOOOO!
I think it would have been even better if he'd walked off camera each time he turned his hat over and swapped characters... but that's not how he did it on stage.
@SecretSuetSlinger Actually to me, seeing him make the transformation in between characters is priceless. What a quick mind and command of motion he had!
This sketch was kidn of my introduction to comedy I was a little kid and a saw a Red Skelton impersonator and before the intermission did Guzzler's Gin and ltitle did I know then that it would change my life. At 19 years old I am one of only a handful of people in the world who want to dedicate thier life to this vintage style of humor
@MadsNoble The first few shows started broadcasting color in late 1964. In 1965, they started making all the new shows in color. If you've seen re-runs of "Bewitched", you will notice just the first year (1964) was in black & white.
It is inconceivable how anybody found this talentless fuck even remotely amusing. I'm sure the morons at Republican fundraisers fell about laughing at Red's 'hilarious' antics. I'd rather stick needles in my eyes than listen to any more of this utter, utter drivel.
@JohnnyContagious You are an idiot. You don't know good talent. You are such an idiot. This is a classic. It has survived the test of time. You are just a troglodyte.
@MadsNoble Thank you. I am laughing uproariously at someone who was under the impression that this woefully unfunny sketch was from a TV show calling me a troglodyte. Look at it... Does it even remotely resemble a 40s TV Show, you fucking moron? If Ziegfeld really was doing a retrospective show from his celestial home then this piece of shit would be consigned to the heavenly toilet. I do credit Skelton with one thing, though; he makes Keenan Wynn seem funny... and that's some achievement.
@tuxguys, Great description. My father turned me on to Vaudeville and the comedians and famous actors from their day. Physical humor like this or Dick Van Dyke, or many of the Vaudeville acts involved this. Thanks!
This may be Skelton's signature piece, and it's a masterpiece. Even Carson would cite it on occasion ('Smooooooooooooooth!"), and assume that everyone, or at least the very hip, would get the reference.
In addition, the "Garter" poem was rehashed by Benny Hill in his March 5, 1980 "Court Jester" sketch, with the second line changed a bit to "They cost me one-and-ten," and the last modified to "I shan' t see them again!"
Iv'e been looking for this clip for years I rember seeing Red do this skit on his live tv show when I was growing up, it's a classic by a genius, thanks for posting & me finding a good memory of comedy from my childhood days RIP Red we miss you
I had the luck to see Red do this bit in person during his 1980s appearance at Carnegie Hall - I will never forget that evening with a comedy genius and a sweet man.
This is, I believe, a vignette from a rather surreal movie called "The Ziegfeld Follies," wherein William Powell, reprising his title role from "The Great Ziegfeld," is up in heaven which, for him, is a really nice drawing room, and he speculates what a contemporary (i.e. 1944) Follies would be like.
Certainly, this routine was the inspiration for Lucy's writers to create the "Vitameatavegamin" sequence for her "I LOVE LUCY" episode in 1952. But Lucy brought her own sense of comedy genius [and timing] to the script; in fact, Ross Elliott, who played the "TV director" Lucy Ricardo was supposed to be rehearsing for, bit his lip to keep from laughing during filming when she started adding "extra bits" {including making "goo-goo eyes"} to see how he'd react.
Those were the good old days. I do my best to keep his memory alive by performing 4 nights a week 9pm at the Royal Resort Hotel 99 Convention Center Drive in Las Vegas.
I would like to invite everyone to check out the ONLY show in Las Vegas with a Red Skelton impersonator.
I have seen the one that he did for the queen, but not this version! Thank you for posting! My aunt got the privilege of meeting Red at Kmart before I was born. I wished I could have met him! He's soooo funny!
BTW, turn on automatic captions! You'll get: ((upsetting the nerve test)) ((conflict of interest drexel after-dinner)) (( judge garland knifes moves drink )) ((burglars were laying)) ((there's no backbase dot)) (( hydraulic twenty-five years of war)) ((luv drink)) (( function ))

@MadsNoble I don't know. But this is from a movie from the theater. So that's why it's in such good color.
