I think the reason for there being no real war feature is to prevent players randomly declaring war on newly formed nations or declaring war on weaker nations for no reason. Also, this is supposed to be more of a political game, not so much an empire builder like Sid Meier's Civilization or something. But there again, NationState's cousin CyberNations is basically the same but with war and trade added, and ability to disable war so you'd like that. perhaps?

There used to be a NationStates with war, economics, and the other things you mentioned that the game should have (NationStates 2). It didn't work out so well, and the original NationStates was more popular and liked among players.

In the story, corporations now have much control and influence over much of the world, and almost everything is now privatized. Corporation have their employees idetified by a barcoding on them (thus the logo) and they use the company name as their surname. After the novel was written, NationStates was made so people could run their own country in anyway they like.
