I find it a little odd and worth mention that Zhivago doesn't rub ice off the window for a last glimpse... he finds he can't open it, and shatters the window with a rod instead... the acting and staging at this point in the movie, need no script.
The scoundrel Komarovsky is a type of facilitator who guides the new Russia into the next era of Russian history. Here he is symbolic of the corrupt vehicle which would propel the nation into a Marxist degeneracy of which they 'the Russians, personified as Laura " are unaware of; and as such the people themselves are oblivious to the events that are to overcome them. Komarovsky the future, departs with Laura, the present; Zhivago the past, is abandoned; he stays behind, forgotten.
In that case, Zhivago himself is equally a scoundrel. If he represents the past, it is the past which had become unreliable, hypocritical, and unwilling to retain its principles. Komarovsky simply preys on their idiocy (traits that were apparently present in the previous generation as well).
@deCaravagio Actually, adjusted for inflation, Doctor Zhivago made more money than Avatar, even though that doesn't matter when deciding which is better. Doctor Zhivago actually had a PLOT. Avatar's plot is weak, cliche, and its story has been told before (i. e. Dances with Wolves). Doctor Zhivago's cinematography is beautiful, it has gorgeous senery, and excellent acting. It doesn't have flashy special effects because, well, there's no need for any. Special effects don't make a film. What makes
@JPnintendofan a film is when story, acting, editing, directing, and sometimes music are combined together in perfect harmony. Avatar completely forgets what the art of film is all about. It's nothing but an emotionless action sci-fi flick. Now 3D is just a gimmick. It can't make a bad movie good. All 3D does is add depth perception, which isn't needed in a film. I won't even mention what critics say about Avatar because, critics are all different and I don't care about what they say. Besides,
@JPnintendofan ...!,000 % right about Avatar.Avatar is a film, Zhivago is a movie. Can`t hold a candle to Zhivago. Lean was an artist, Cameron is a hack.
@deCaravagio most critics will agree that Avatar had a weak plot (Whoops, I mentioned it). I've said it before, but if a film has a bad plot, it's not any good. A film must tell a story. It's not interesting when the plot is awful. So there you go. I am done with my three part rebuttal of your ludicrous opinions. Call me back when you learn some better English. The End.
@JPnintendofan My English improved dramatically after reading
your ramble. You are typing to much words without meaning .
Your ability to analyze cinematography is extremely poor.To be able to analyze anything , you have to be educated and you need to have your own opinion.
You are failing miserably in that matter, but keep trying ).
@deCaravagio Alright, asshole. Go on being an ignorant prick for all I care. Go on thinking that Avatar is a masterpiece of cinema. I don't even care anymore. That's your problem. Good day, sir.
Zhivago bids Lara goodbye and strains to see her disappear into the distance. He runs and claws at the window to see into the future, but cannot as it has escaped him
Lara, (the present), bids Zhivago (the past) goodbye. The mandolin is symbolic of the dreams of Mother Russia which Lara carries into the future as a memory of the past. Zhivago cannot go with Lara as he lives in the past and she, in the present. The future will not accept them both.
Lara (present Russia )leaves and goes into an uncertain future leaving Zhivago and the past behind ( old Russia). The mandolin is symbolic of the dreams of Mother Russia. Lara carries it into the future as a memory of the past.

"Whoever does not understand why Yuri went up the stairs that way and breaks the window to see Lara departing on the horizon is someone who has never been in love."
Una de las mejores películas. Nos mostraba la vida tal como es, el nacimiento, la pérdida del padre, el amor y la muerte. En la actualidad todo es demasiado virtual y no saboreamos nuestras vidas. Viva David Lynch! Viva!
Dr.Zhivago must be the ONLY movie that took three years to make, and it's based on a true story. Also, this must be the most beautiful theme song EVER! :)
violentoffender, I hope you are not TOO violent ! I agree that the beautiful novel by Boris Pasternak was not based on a true story, but it WAS INSPIRED by his own love affair with Olga Ivinskaya. He wrote of Lara with Olga in his mind always. He said so himself.
Oops, I hit the wrong hand by mistake and made the thumb point down. Sorry! Now, let me clarify my comment. Since Boris has based his novel on his own love affair and the hitorical events described in it have taken place, it seems to me that it's more of a true story than just a fictional novel. With the exception of a few details such as Boris' occupation, the rape of Lara, the shooting part and I'm not sure about the missing daughter, the rest of it is true. :)
Elala44, I haven't read the book, but have seen the film. I can't work out if Lara really was raped in the legal sense. Also, I'm not sure if Katya, her daughter, was supposed to be Komarovsky's or Pasha's- 1965 films didn't always spell out the facts of life!
part of the deal with kamarovsky was that lara was going to be his mistress. zhivago didn't want the humiliation of seeing lara give herself to another man
I agree with you. It was a wonderfull movie but I also don't understand it. Pearhapes because the possible arrived of the comunist soldiers but I'm not shure. Vanderley-Brazil.
He knew that Komarovsky never meant for him to be part of their "escape". By telling Lara that he was coming later, was the only way to be sure that she went with him. He knew Komarovsky was right and to stay would be certain death and as much as he loved her he let her go so she could live. Deep down, Lara knew this too but perhaps held out hope that he would come.
The character of Dr Zhivago is a man who has much difficulty making up his mind it seems. He has an affair with Lara while married to Tonya, but loves them both. After the departure of Lara and his own return to Moscow, he has an affair with Marina, the janitor's daughter, and he has two more daughters. This is not in the movie but in the book by Pasternak.
I'm unexpectedly living a version of this scenario. Once, I thought the film was an exercise in masculine irresposibility and selfishness. Now I'm confronting the dilemma you've so wisely expressed
I find it a little odd and worth mention that Zhivago doesn't rub ice off the window for a last glimpse... he finds he can't open it, and shatters the window with a rod instead... the acting and staging at this point in the movie, need no script.

@GeoTime09 ,
Your words are touching and clever, you made some points.
They live in the same country but were raced in diferent worlds, and future will not accept them, for very diferent reasons.
In the novel, Zhivago becomes an empty man, that is the sadest of all the story.
At least, we can claim that true love is inmortal...
