Studio Ghibli likes to keep their old traditions (unlike Disney) and still paints almost all backdrops and people by hand - like in Mononoke Hime, however, they use modern machinery for effects and for shooting. Their latest work, Gake no Ue no Ponyo, is also mostly hand-drawn by Miyazaki. But their new project, titled "Ninokuni: THE ANOTHER WORLD," has more parts animated digitally, which makes sense because it's not an animated film, but a game.

Well, after mononoke they started using computers.

The drawings and the backgrounds are still being done by hand, they're just scanned and the scenes are composed in the computer.
