  • This kid ain't that bad. Good camera presence.

What you need to do is brainstorm and try to find anyway that you as students & those in student government can find any type of leverage they have over School Admn ( who might cow-tow to CA bureaucrats) and CA legislators and then EXPLOIT-THAT leverage. It's a dirty game and you have to do whatever it takes, young men and women!!! How far are you willing to go?

  • I think we should all come together and tax alcohol, tobacco and oil companies furthermore! Allocate these funds for education in all levels!! High school was a joke!

Higher education is NOT A RIGHT and those who cannot achieve a raised 2.4 is it? I think they should raise it to a minimum 3.0!! They are too many hedonists in this campus and this needs to stop. These people should look into trade schools and leave the universities to those devoted to ppl serious about education and research!

  • I see these comments as a forum for good discussion. I'm Tyler Boden, and all I want is progress.

The idea that education is a privilege is interesting, and I agree to some extent - at the Higher Education level. Admission is limited, so we need to give it to those that earn it...

The problem is, K-12 education in many areas is not effective enough to prepare students for Higher Ed, so the CSU has taken a lot of steps in the past to recognize that fact and help the situation.

    ......

  • Case in Point: The problem of education doesn't stop at the Higher Ed level, it's everywhere. It won't be easy to fix the problems with all the deficits at the state level, but I think it's possible. And it's up to US - the people with yound minds and fresh perspectives - to figure out how it will be done. If it's left up to legislators, it won't happen.

    Thoughts?

  • Education is not a right. Education is merit based. If you are not intelligent enough to get into a school, then you don't belong there.

  • That is true. I do not support the budget cuts. But I do support merit based state colleges. To say the education is a right is a philosophically ungrounded statement though.

  • One more thing: I do agree that the furloughs suck, but really; Where is the money going to come from? California is taking it from everywhere, not just schools.

  • (ctd.) When I heard they raised the minimum GPA, I was happy. If you can't maintain a 2.4, you don't belong in a university because you aren't even trying. Heaven forbid you all attend a school that cares about the minds of the students it lets in. I wish they would be even MORE stringent so that I didn't have to navigate the sea of party obsessed morons every day on my way to class.

  • I agree!!!

  • I believe your comment only reinforces my point, but if you require an excuse from me, here: I moved across the country to live with the person that I'm now married to, so I was eager to transfer to a college that I was certain wouldn't turn me down and would fit into our budget since this state is so freaking expensive to live in. He's in the stationed here (military), so it's not like we could be picky about location. SDSU is also a good research school...

  • ...and since I intend to become a professor, it's a valuable resource. With this in mind, just imagine how awesome SDSU could be if it were comprised mainly of academically minded people! You suggest I go find a better university, but I'm suggesting that the univerisity I'm enrolled in become better for me. Selfish? A little. But this is a university, for crying out loud. Doesn't anyone care about what that's supposed to mean anymore? Medieval history, people.

  • FYI..SDSU is the most selective school among the CSU school system.

  • I don't know that that necessarily makes them selective per se; just more so than the other Cali state universities.

  • Yes, education is a right. That's why there are community colleges that require little more than a pulse for one to get into.

University education, however, is not and SHOULD NOT be a right. I should be able to be proud of the fact that I was accepted into a university due to my academic "excellence". I shouldn't have to attend classes that are full of people that are way behind where they should be and thus hindering my own education.

  • I completely agree! like the proverb says..".feed a man a fish feed him for a day, teach a man how to fish and you'll feed him for a life time! Education is important more than ever! I just wish more younger students could realize whats ahead of them and help them plan for the future! like a young adult workshops that teaches you how to budget, teaches you how to time manage, teach you how to be sociable without the need of getting drunk in the most important part of decision making of your life

  • Well said, Mr. Boden. Let's pull together as a community to get California higher education back on track.
