  • @MizzYungMacMar my sentiments exactly!

  • Comment removed

  • @MizzYungMacMar Sounds a lot different huh? People that say there's no talent involved in rap deserve to be shot, they've taken this instrumental and completely evolved it.

  • @JusticityTV yep also a lot of hard work involved & is an art form just like anything else

  • @MizzYungMacMar

actually their producers sample this but i know what you mean

  • Roc boys in da buildin!

  • Ooohw that drum break!!

    angry neighbours right now!! LOL

    pz

  • what a beautiful hearty track and im only minute n half in ...top stuff

  • Malice & Sandman ripped this so hard.

  • Doom rides over a beat that samples from this on that borat tape that dropped recently. But as in every sample credit goes to the originator. all hail menahan for lacin this shit for our pleasure

  • There is so much to sample on this. Its not about who you sample but what you sample. Remember,a good break is wher you find it. Look deep and LISTEN HARD

  • Hi Guys i found the name of it. Its I.B.E – Make the Road by Walkin’ ft. Toki Wright Check it out if you get time. The second rap is my favourite.

  • Thumbs up if you didn't know this from Jay Z !

  • i LOVE you guys! come out w/ more stuff....every film, rapper etc uses your beats...

  • Dope Boys of the year, Drinks is on the house

  • YES!

  • oh my gawd!!! love the claps in there.

  • There is another hip hop song apart from j zees that sampled this. Is it common or something? Please help!!

  • @kmp3000 Asher Roth- Roth Boys

  • @kmp3000 solo dolo by kid cudi

  • Yeahhhh

  • great afrobeat

  • Menahan Kills its. To bad Jay-z had to rob it and use it for his junk music. Be Orignal.

  • @jgm3100 they LET jay-z use it BEFORE they released it!

  • fissionchips303's yh Jay z obviously on roc boys, but he didnt sample it he replayed it with his band and made the snare sound louder. Psssh.. And if i'm not mistaken Kid Cudi sampled them aswell on another track from make the road by walking record.

  • Jay-Z is overrated

  • @swams0 Fuck off

He has a song for people like you its called "Hate"

  • So love this!!! It comes to a point that you can just appreciate music for music.

  • I fear if I play this song for my wife we just may have another baby.

    If so........

    .....Menahan will be his name.

  • The bass line in this rocks my socks off.

  • @jonnda i couldn't agree more

  • Why is everyone talking about Jay Z and Diddy? Did one of them sample or "base" from this?

  • @fissionchips303 you must live under a roc.... roc boy

  • @fissionchips303 The song "Make the Road by Walking" is named after a membership-based organization which is located around the corner from Menahan Street (on Grove Street) which promotes social and economic justice for community, through organizing, lawyering and numerous forms of advocacy. The tune was sampled by Jay-Z on the track "Roc Boys (and the Winner is…)" (from American Gangster), which was named by Rolling Stone to be the No. 1 single of 2007. ( according to wikipedia ) :D

  • TapeOp had a great review of this album. Apparently it was recorded authentically for the era it emulates using analog equipment direct to tape. No ProTools edits here!

  • @ getjasonbourne Menahan Street Band made this a great record, not Diddy. The beat is so close it should be called a cover, not a sample. If you want to hear talented producers listen to JayDee(Dilla) or DJ Premiere. These guys weave up to 5 samples to create an original song, not a copy. When u listen to a Dilla track then the original(s) you can see creativity and skill, not just stealing a hot sound. Biggup Menahan Street Band! Do your history youngins!

  • @chocheech The record I'm referring too that was made great was the Roc Boys record. The thing is, alot of people think they can judge what makes good production. If the producer just through a kick and a snare on there you'd complain about that. So now I'm saying all the processing in the world couldn't bring the horns out and Diddy threw some live horns on top of the sample which in turn gave the rap song some power.

  • @chocheech and by the way you're talking to someone who is VERY knowledgeable about production, and producers, and I can name a shitload of records where Premo, Dilla and countless other of the best producers of all time made beats with simple loops and created undeniable hip hop classics, so I never understood this new breed of critics who feel you need to chop records into a million pieces to make a ill beat. I've got thousands of vinyl in my collection so i think i know MY history.

  • @chocheech Mass Appeal, Nas Is Like, NY State of Mind, Mad Izm, Ice Cream, C.R.E.A.M., Bring the Pain, Public Service Announcement, Shook Ones, We Gonna Make It, 187 (Deep Cover), Today Was A Good Day, and Shadowboxin are some of the best beats of all time, and every single one of those were just plain short loops with no crazy chopping, and little more added than some bass and drums. You gonna tell me those aren't ill beats? 9th added bass and drums to the sample for "Lovin It," THAT's wack?

  • @Baybekdl He the GOAT man he past hot this dude got so many songs he got a different line up of songs for his concert in different cities!! who does that come on thats pure greatness!!

  • I'm not a huge Jay-Z fan at all but he went mad hard on this track, only if he had 20 more songs like this he would be hot

  • @BAYBEKDL Something must be wrong with your ears if you don't like jay.

  • @bkanimal I didn't say I don't like Jay-Z I said if he had more dope songs he would be real hot 3 or 4 songs on a album here and there don't make you hot

  • @BAYBEKDL He's got more hits and street classics on his belt than any other rapper in history, regardless of who anyone feels the best is, THAT fact is undeniable.

  • ROTH BOYS IN THE BUILDIN TONIGHT!!!

  • Listening to this just reminds you how talentless this generation is. This is basically verbatim. Jay-z spills his drug dealing foolishness upon it. Jay-z should pay royalties.

  • @southsidesman First of all, he DID pay royalties. Secondly, he WAS a drug dealer, and the song was a single for an album done for a movie ABOUT a real drug dealer, like himself. I suppose the song should've been about skateboarding or Apple Jacks cereal?

  • @getjasonborn Well you can give that skate board and big ol' bowl of cereal to that 40 year old kid Jay-z who's growth is stunted to the time he sold drugs as a teenager - on every album he's made!

    Toys''R''Us kid!

  • cool~track~

  • Evidently alot of yall don't know who did what.......First of all Diddy had little to do with the making of this beat. 2nd....Just Blaze had absolutley NOTHING to do with this beat.......The real producers names are L.V. and Sean C.....Grind Music Inc....they work for the Hitmen....which is why Diddy gets credit for it.....Know what you talkin bout b4 you start posting stuff....word!

  • @mad1590 Diddy was the one who recommended they included live horns. And in the end, that's what really brought the song out. So while all respect is due to the beatmakers, even if one person comes in and says "more cowbell" if that makes a significant change to the vibe of a record, they deserve their respect too since not anyone is gonna hear the record and be able to say "you know what? it could really use this." Pretty asinine to say that person had "little" to do with the record.

  • HOVIE'S HOME!!!!!

  • Love this song. Swagger music.

  • Nice track

  • jay doesn't produce ish the hitmen sampled the song on behalf of p.diddy who sold it to jay z

  • @sefpo Diddy don't do SHIT wow

  • @PatrickStreater he doesn't but they used it right

  • @aahhhshaddap are you fuckin stupid? Jay sampled the beat

  • @JussBlaaaaze Nah actually diddy was the one who did the sampling

  • @PatrickStreater Diddy Did It

  • @sillian1st ea thats what I said

  • @PatrickStreater well you know what I mean he used the beat by whoever the fuck sampled it

  • @JussBlaaaaze chea

  • @PatrickStreater Diddy didn't do the sampling. He got production credit for his input but the Hitmen (which are his guys anyway) really put it down

  • @getjasonborn Thats shady on diddys part

  • @PatrickStreater I wouldn't say that....people know they did the track, plus i'm pretty sure they got paid and all that.

  • @getjasonborn you right you right

  • "the song Make the Road by Walking was sampled by fellow Brooklynite Jay-Z for his smash hit from American Gangster, Roc Boys (and the Winner is) (later declared by Rolling Stone to be the No. 1 single of 2007)." -From their website at Dunham records

  • @aahhhshaddap: its right what lgmatshanee is saying.

  • why did they sample jay-z to make this song? jackers.

  • @aahhhshaddap - Actually it was Jay Z who sampled them. Do you really know your Hip-Hop? So many hip-hop artist sample nowadays?

  • Shit man, are you taking the piss? No one wants to be your bro and I don't blame them. Jay-Z has enormous respect for the Menahan Street Band, and he DID sample this song.

And Hip Hop is neither an art form nor an industry, it is a musical genre. Music is an industry, Hip Hop is not. The fucking shit you call "knowledgeable people", you dare speak for everyone else? You know shit, you speak shit, you ARE the shit I have to wipe off my shoe. Lick yourself off my shoe, you piece of shit.

  • @Scapetti hip hop is an art form u ass

  • @Scapetti i'm ashamed to be in a conversation with you all. you guys don't know shit. obviously you don't know hip hop and you don't know how sampling works. as for you scapetti, i should slap you like the filthy hooker that you are.

  • @aahhhshaddap How does sampling work? :)

  • @Scapetti do i really have to explain this? i guess i do because evidently none of you know shit about sampling. it's when you take a portion, or a "sample" from one song and use it as a sound bite or instrument in another song. e.g. menahan street band sampling jay-z's "roc boys"

  • @aahhhshaddap I don't understand, oh I give up. You seem to know shit about sampling but I don't know shit :)

  • @aahhhshaddap I hope that was a typo- Jay sampled the menahan street band not the other way around

  • @thesnowman21 was not a typo. you read it right. menahan street band sampled jay-z. i don't know how many times i have to tell you guys.

  • @aahhhshaddap no, thats wrong, Kanye sampled this beat, its just that American Gangster came out b4 because Jay-Z did that album in like a month and it took the band 3 years to finish their album.

  • @apokalypse4000 if im not mistaken,Kanye sampled this song on used it for Roc Boys, cause it sounds like some are sayin it the other way around?!

  • @apokalypse4000 Actually, Diddy sampled it, not Kanye. For real.

  • @aahhhshaddap you are an idiot

  • @Scapetti Hip-Hop is a lifestyle.....RAP is the music.

  • @getjasonborn exact but some people just don't get it but I won't let 'em upset me cuz they don't know better, they don't know what the fuck is like to be so fed up and fed so many uppers you're down and won't get up

  • This is not afro beat, fucking asshat.

  • @nealho lmfaooooooooo @ asshat

  • i as just saying... i think nealho thinks afro-beat isn't an actual genre.

  • actually it is. it even says it on wikipedia

  • @loupremo wiki says so, must be true

  • Comment removed

  • Don't gloat! Damn! :O(

  • jay-z roc boys

  • WOW.....They can still make that "soul" sound today.

  • Hotness

  • BULLET WOUNDS TO STOP YOUR BUFFOONERY

  • No. This is an original performance by the musicians who play on a lot of tracks from Daptone Records and its sub-labels.

  • Fail

  • as always...the originals are the best

  • when was this released? Are you allowed to sample stuff if its relatively new?

  • @TheSinghFIRE

There's not really rules to sampling.

    Just dont jack beats.

  • 2008

  • Like Darrick says, but you have to mash it up enough for it not to be sue-able. So for example, you can't just take a whole bar out of a stonephace track and loop it, but you can cut quarter notes an shit.

    Peace

  • Yea,cause that song where im form by jay-z on his 98 or 99 album was sampled by snoop dogg n dr.dre in 02,the diddy recently sampled it the mmakes his previous new song "angels"....and the song by drake "congratulations" came out in 08 and it sampled coldplays "viva la vida" which also came out in 08.....idk if that helps u

  • fool jayz sampled it too. Dont act like he was original with it.

  • i love this

    Dig Me??

  • jay z bought this song to use the sample

  • ya sure casue you dont need to buy the rights to a song to sample it

  • Listening to this music makes me hallucinate

    That's how awesome it is

  • jay-z sampled this to make roc boys

  • diddy actually produced it...jay bought the track of diddy...

  • yea i know diddy made the beat, him n kanye

  • Diddy + sean c and lv

  • This is sooo funky. Awesome track, makes me feel great!

  • This is hooottttt! I'm almost glad rappers sample cuz the old songs I don't know I can find out about via "liner notes" :)

  • but its a new song, not old

  • erm... this isn't old, just sounds old. Check the discogs website and also the-breaks and do some homework.

  • If you have a pulse, you're jammin' to this.

  • @mrjohnnynofear Well that's a relief.

  • I like

  • Love the Daptones Studio. I used to live down the street from them. I spin the 7-inch of this pretty often. Keep 'em coming boys!

  • a true original classic.

  • I like how it builds

  • This is just dope.

  • This is far greater than anything Jay Z or the "Roc boyz" ever turned out.

  • If I was a boxer, this song would be playin' on my way into the ring..!!

  • Everytime I hear this sh$t, it just blows my f$ckin mind ... Menahan's preachin' and teachin', but not with words ...

  • this beat was also used in the mixtape God's Gangster featuring Nas

  • THIS IS BLACK SUPERHERO MUSIC

  • Roc Boys is one of Jay-Z best songs in my opinion....one of the best beats he has ever used aswell.

and for everybody talking about the sampling, and cut and screwing business, Diddy, L.V. and his Diddy's other guys didnt do anything of the sort, they jus got a trumpet player, a trombone player and a saxophone player to re play it, then they used that. Mario Winans did the drums, and BINGO! you got Roc Boys.

  • Couldnt agree more!
