@MizzYungMacMar Sounds a lot different huh? People that say there's no talent involved in rap deserve to be shot, they've taken this instrumental and completely evolved it.
Doom rides over a beat that samples from this on that borat tape that dropped recently. But as in every sample credit goes to the originator. all hail menahan for lacin this shit for our pleasure
There is so much to sample on this. Its not about who you sample but what you sample. Remember,a good break is wher you find it. Look deep and LISTEN HARD
fissionchips303's yh Jay z obviously on roc boys, but he didnt sample it he replayed it with his band and made the snare sound louder. Psssh.. And if i'm not mistaken Kid Cudi sampled them aswell on another track from make the road by walking record.
@fissionchips303 The song "Make the Road by Walking" is named after a membership-based organization which is located around the corner from Menahan Street (on Grove Street) which promotes social and economic justice for community, through organizing, lawyering and numerous forms of advocacy. The tune was sampled by Jay-Z on the track "Roc Boys (and the Winner is…)" (from American Gangster), which was named by Rolling Stone to be the No. 1 single of 2007. ( according to wikipedia ) :D
TapeOp had a great review of this album. Apparently it was recorded authentically for the era it emulates using analog equipment direct to tape. No ProTools edits here!
@ getjasonbourne Menahan Street Band made this a great record, not Diddy. The beat is so close it should be called a cover, not a sample. If you want to hear talented producers listen to JayDee(Dilla) or DJ Premier. These guys weave up to 5 samples to create an original song, not a copy. When u listen to a Dilla track then the original(s) you can see creativity and skill, not just stealing a hot sound. Biggup Menahan Street Band! Do your history youngins!

@chocheech The record I'm referring too that was made great was the Roc Boys record. The thing is, alot of people think they can judge what makes good production. If the producer just through a kick and a snare on there you'd complain about that. So now I'm saying all the processing in the world couldn't bring the horns out and Diddy threw some live horns on top of the sample which in turn gave the rap song some power.
@chocheech and by the way you're talking to someone who is VERY knowledgeable about production, and producers, and I can name a shitload of records where Premo, Dilla and countless other of the best producers of all time made beats with simple loops and created undeniable hip hop classics, so I never understood this new breed of critics who feel you need to chop records into a million pieces to make a ill beat. I've got thousands of vinyl in my collection so i think i know MY history.
@chocheech Mass Appeal, Nas Is Like, NY State of Mind, Mad Izm, Ice Cream, C.R.E.A.M., Bring the Pain, Public Service Announcement, Shook Ones, We Gonna Make It, 187 (Deep Cover), Today Was A Good Day, and Shadowboxin are some of the best beats of all time, and every single one of those were just plain short loops with no crazy chopping, and little more added than some bass and drums. You gonna tell me those aren't ill beats? 9th added bass and drums to the sample for "Lovin It," THAT's wack?
@Baybekdl He the GOAT man he past hot this dude got so many songs he got a different line up of songs for his concert in different cities!! who does that come on thats pure greatness!!
@bkanimal I didn't say I don't like Jay-Z I said if he had more dope songs he would be real hot 3 or 4 songs on a album here and there don't make you hot
@BAYBEKDL He's got more hits and street classics on his belt than any other rapper in history, regardless of who anyone feels the best is, THAT fact is undeniable.
Listening to this just reminds you how talentless this generation is. This is basically verbatim. Jay-z spills his drug dealing foolishness upon it. Jay-z should pay royalties.
@southsidesman First of all, he DID pay royalties. Secondly, he WAS a drug dealer, and the song was a single for an album done for a movie ABOUT a real drug dealer, like himself. I suppose the song should've been about skateboarding or Apple Jacks cereal?
@getjasonborn Well you can give that skate board and big ol' bowl of cereal to that 40 year old kid Jay-z who's growth is stunted to the time he sold drugs as a teenager - on every album he's made!
Evidently alot of yall don't know who did what.......First of all Diddy had little to do with the making of this beat. 2nd....Just Blaze had absolutley NOTHING to do with this beat.......The real producers names are L.V. and Sean C.....Grind Music Inc....they work for the Hitmen....which is why Diddy gets credit for it.....Know what you talkin bout b4 you start posting stuff....word!
@mad1590 Diddy was the one who recommended they included live horns. And in the end, that's what really brought the song out. So while all respect is due to the beatmakers, even if one person comes in and says "more cowbell" if that makes a significant change to the vibe of a record, they deserve their respect too since not anyone is gonna hear the record and be able to say "you know what? it could really use this." Pretty asinine to say that person had "little" to do with the record.

bro. come on, bro. you obvi don't know that much about jay-z or hip hop as an art form or industry. jay-z had this made by puff diddy sean combs and his cronies, the hitmen. rolling stone named it the best song of 2007, and this is the reason these guys the so-called menahan street band decided to take the horns from jay-z's song and make it their own, except there are knowledgeable people out there like me who can recognize that it is, in fact, jay-z's song. ok, bro?
Shit man, are you taking the piss? No one wants to be your bro and I don't blame them. Jay-Z has enormous respect for the Menahan Street Band, and he DID sample this song.
And Hip Hop is neither an art form nor an industry, it is a musical genre. Music is an industry, Hip Hop is not. The fucking shit you call "knowledgeable people", you dare speak for everyone else? @Scapetti do i really have to explain this? i guess i do because evidently none of you know shit about sampling. it's when you take a portion, or a "sample" from one song and use it as a sound bite or instrument in another song. e.g. menahan street band sampling jay-z's "roc boys"
@aahhhshaddap no, thats wrong, Kanye sampled this beat, its just that American Gangster came out b4 because Jay-Z did that album in like a month and it took the band 3 years to finish their album.
@getjasonborn exact but some people just don't get it but I won't let 'em upset me cuz they don't know better, they don't know what the fuck is like to be so fed up and fed so many uppers you're down and won't get up
Like Darrick says, but you have to mash it up enough for it not to be sue-able. So for example, you can't just take a whole bar out of a stonephace track and loop it, but you can cut quarter notes an shit.

Roc Boys is one of Jay-Z best songs in my opinion....one of the best beats he has ever used aswell.
and for everybody talking about the sampling, and cut and screwing business, Diddy, L.V. and his Diddy's other guys didnt do anything of the sort, they jus got a trumpet player, a trombone player and a saxophone player to re play it, then they used that. Mario Winans did the drums, and BINGO! you got Roc Boys.

erm... this isn't old, just sounds old. Check the discogs website and also the-breaks and do some homework.

Love the Daptones Studio. I used to live down the street from them. I spin the 7-inch of this pretty often. Keep 'em coming boys!

This is far greater than anything Jay Z or the "Roc boyz" ever turned out.
