  • why is ellen page hating lolz

  • I envy her neat handwriting and being able to do without a PC. I have nerve damage in my dominant arm and only took to PC's because i can't write legibly, but can hunt and peck fairly fast on a keyboard. Sometimes I wish I could "unplug" and write with a pen and paper.....aside from that thought, she's so dreamy.....

  • Well put.

  • The internet is Americas new past-time. She just prefers an older one, reading. But she didn't point that out, she let the camera do it, because she's not an elitist, just more articulate and well read than the majority of people.

  • its funny or ironic that she is against technology and...we're using computer(garlic knot) to look at the videos

  • ROY. G. BIV. garlic knot... LOL :)

  • i like her shirt

    i am cuban

    i feel happy about that

  • the vapors or the bloody flux.

  • bob, save ya self , get more active friends

  • she is sliding dangerously close to elitism in her critique of the web, but have been accused of elitism on alot of things. what she is saying is mostly true, anyway. she has built a career on a special brand of elitism: good old fashioned alienation. which is not necessarily a bad thing.

  • we watch you on the internet lol

  • lol

  • I don't quite understand why she said "...makes me a damn fine american" at the end. What was that about?

  • It was a joke.

  • Yeah I get that it was a joke but I don't get it.

The story she was telling was an exaggeration of what she does but what does "makes me a damn fine american" at the end, what's it supposed to mean?

That she is still "American" even though she isn't a fan of the internet? in a sarcastic way?

  • Not rely. That being a good American has nothing to do with using/not using the web IS the joke. As she draws near the end of her piece she becomes increasingly whimsical and non-literal and ends it with a mock-passionate display of political conviction-AS IF it were a deep point. If I had to guess, I'd say the last few sentences were not pre-conceived but improvised. In other words, the last phrase is not a cryptic punch line that we are meant to unravel the meaning of. It's a non sequitur.

  • yeah i dont think it was a non sequitir. the way i saw it is strip off the sarcastic (whimsical/non-literal) things of what she said and you get what she really does at night. so the old fashioned/fine american line at the end makes it weird.

If the whole thing was pure sarcasm then man, that sucked.

  • The non-sarcastic point of the video (whats left after stripping away the jokes) is that technology and the internet in particular, although theoretically holding out a lot of promise, often dose not have the advantage over the traditional print medium in practice because of the inevitable distractions. Also that text messaging is the epitome of technology-caused discourse lowering. So no, the whole thing is not sarcastic and the last line IS meant to be a joke in the way I tried to explain.

  • when i said strip the sarcastic things she said. I meant it for 2:44 till the end since the very end seems to refer to everything she said from this point on.

I get the whole internet/email/txt thing cause that rant has been milked enough over the last 7 years.

what i dont get and bothers me is the last line. if it was in fact a non sequitur then everything from 2:44 was sarcastic meaningless bs.

  • The only thing i can think off was that she was being making fun of the ideology that everyone should be hooked on the internet and if you arent then you are a strange one.

But that still isn't very insightful and funny. I guess I just expected something better.

  • ...but how do you get your emails?... I don't!

    LOL

    Best disquisition ever...

  • I think she plays on her rep as a bitter cynic in her "Disquisition" pieces; at least, I hope she's not so prickly in "real life."

  • I dont want to presume with my 'goddess'... I like janeane a lot...she belongs to the non telepath realm we're over run by...shut the fuck up! She's lovely. Before I retire...

  • Jeneane...I just...all I can say is that if there were more women like you out there, I may actually stop preferring to sleep alone. Keep it up (even though I know you will never read this).

  • I agree, Janeane. I don't like texting myself. I think it's actually quite stupid.

  • I love this women

  • This is one of the few things that I disagree with Janeane on... I love the internet. And as for texting, I never type LOL after anything I say. Basically I text like I'm typing right now--in proper English.

I like the message at 2:14 (you need to pause to read it): "The nail would have gone here... but I think Dinello or Anderson swiped my hammer... Perhaps I never had one in the first place..."

  • I distinctly recall her telling her father to email her on her radio show. I think she's being a bit disingenuous here.

  • She was recently on Real Time with Bill Maher (on Sept 21, if you have HBO On Demand you can watch it, it's episode 109), and she said, and I quote, "I don't have email anymore..." I think the "anymore" is important, as it implies that she did, indeed, have email at one point but got rid of it at some point after making that statement to her father on-air (which I admittedly never heard, as I actually didn't listen to her show, for the sole reason that I kept forgetting it was on).

  • I didn't hear her say that, but I watched the episode here (not doubting what you said), and I could have very well missed it.

It's a bit silly not having email in this day and age...

  • The bloggosphere (which is unabashedly left wing) are very important right now, and they serve as a balance to the right wing lean of the MSM. Janeane has a rather anachoristic, tired view of the Net that everyone who uses it uses it for porn and gossip sites. Some obviously do, but many do use the Net for other, important things like news. The Net is quickly becoming the main source of news for people who are tired of the MSM, and Janeane's bashing of it is rather short sighted...

  • Okay, this is really stupid, but what does MSM stand for?

(I just know that eight seconds after I post this, it's going to pop into my head.)

  • Mainstream media...

  • Ah. Okay, thanks. (I kept thinking "Microsoft... something?")

  • No problem. One of those Internet expressions that Janeane would probably have a problem with. What'd you think about my initial comment (about Janeane's anachoristic opinion about the Internet, and that her bashing is short sighted)....

  • You know, it's weird, I tried to reply to that comment twice and it only said "Posting comment" but never "Comment posted!" Anyway, yes, I do agree with that. Yes, it's true that I don't spend 100% of my time on nytimes dot com or msnbc dot com, but then again, who does? Personally my main objective for being on the 'net is to be entertained. (I prefer humor and music sites.)

  • I did read, though, a while back that Janeane likes (liked?) buzzflash dot com (in fact I know they interviewed her) and I think also The Onion. (the above comment was too long so I had to add this as a reply)

  • She did an interview in Venus where she praised the Internet. And you're right, buzzflash did an interview with her (she mentioned the website in the Venus interview).

  • I like cinema sites myself, but I do go to political sites (though not as much as I used to). Janeane should know how important the bloggosphere is to politics. She has said as much in other interviews (like the one on buzzflash you mentioned in another post).

  • the vapors...

  • She really needed to say that in a Southern accent.

  • Yea Janeane! Thanks Robert for posting it.

  • your Welcome..
