If Labor hadn't got rid of Kevin Rudd, they'll properbly win for years to come, out of every person I know that I talked to about politics, 99 out of 100 liked Rudd's leadership, one of my friend even cried on the day that Rudd resigned, now that I see that this kind of "dog" act by Julia Gillard, even though I quite liked the Labor government compared to the Howard government, I would vote for Tony this time.
Labor got rid of Kevin Rudd because public opinion/polls were telling them that if they kept him in as PM then they would NOT be winning for years to come. Gillard stepped because she was asked to, and was happy to do so. She didn't take anything from him. That said, the leader is not the issue, but rather the party they are leading. Even with new leadership, Labor has still failed (proven by the most recent polls putting Liberal ahead). I will be voting Liberal/Abbott too

The governor general appoints the Prime minister who has the confidence of the house but since parliament can't sit until a government is appointed it is a matter of convention that the party with the majority of votes will for government and their leader becomes the PM.
