We tye the Royal Coachman a lot. It is used here in our mountain streams. That is a beautiful fly. The whip finish is beautifully tyed. We tye the half hitch and whip finish knot by hand, but this was interesting. Thank you. Nice video.
Hi Davie, success i manged to tye this fly, it didn't look as neat as yours but practice makes perfect. i'm having a lot of problem with my thread snapping could you give me any tips its really frustrating, Regards Alan
The main reason the thread breaks is due to the tension from the bobbin holder, you must bend and adjust the arms so that the thread can flow freely from the bobbin holder but not too slack that it falls on the floor. It's one thing I need to show on a video as I do get asked a lot about this...
@skipperfox007 Hi, My thread used to break when I started to tie coz my thread kept touching the hook point..You'll notice Davie's thread never touches the hook point..The hook point wont cut the thread but it will fray & damage it enough for the thread to break under normal tension.. My problem was that I didn't get enough tension from my aging bobbins , so I stuck duct tape across the actual bobbin holes & that strategy gives me just enough tension.. Hope this helps?? @xonflame Hi Tony, many thanks for your advice i can see what you mean i think that is some of my problem and also tension on the bobbin like davie said, i appreciate the time you spent contacting me it 's great it makes you feel like your not on your own with a problem. I watch Davie tying all the time and think he is a master tyer, I've learnt a lot from watching his videos, trouble is a lot of the feathers he uses are not in my kit yet but theres time to build it up. Regards Alan UK
@xonflame Hi Tony, I've only just taken up fly fishing after being a coarse fisherman for 50 odd years in 2008 i became ill with cancer and wasn't able to do much of anything. over the last 12 months i started fly fishing and progressed to tying, i can't explain the satisfaction i get from tying and catching on one you tied , i find it so theraputic. I really appreciate your tips on alternative materials and if they work or not it gives me confidence to experiment. Thanks again. Alan UK
@skipperfox007 My pleasure Alan.Lately I've been using polyester sewing thread from the supermarket instead of purpose made tying thread. It's strong, comes in every colour ,in sizes of fine to thick ,doesn't absorb water & at $3.00 for 12 spools a bloody good bargain ! Hope you feel better soon,it's great talking to you here ! Let me know if there's anything else I can do for you? Kind Regards,Tony...
I tyed this for a friend that fishes lough Corrib and can be fished both ways . But to be honest I would think it would easily take fished on a river too.
Been fighting this fly all night so I looked it up on you tube. Thanks for the instruction. Also I was using a fine gold wire as a rib to help hold down the herl. Thanks again,
There's many flies that you will find useful throughout the season, if you look through the videos I have on Youtube especially the midge and caddis patterns you will find them worth tying. If you can find a local fishing club I'm sure there will be many a member willing to help you with the type of fly you will need..
Nice fly Dave. I have seen the Royal Coachman a few times and thought it might be nice to try and tye one so after watching this video I did. The next morning my g/f, dog, and I went down to the creek to try them. I cought 16 and my g/f 11. Thanks for the great memore, all the best. Rudy
I have been looking to tye a stone fly for you, the problem is the patterns which I have tyed before can take a bit of time to tye and explain. As you know you are only allowed ten minutes on youtube and I hate having parts in videos
Another flawless flie. Well done.

Good job with the video Davie. I live in the USA and was wondering how you tie your caddis flies across the big pond?
09vanjes 1 year ago
Hi 09vanjes,
I have a few caddis flies on youtube but it would be very hard to beat the many great patterns that come out of the States...
Have a look at them and let me know what you think.

do you think creating this pattern as woolly bugger (size 8-10) and fished as a streamer would be effective?

I never seen this version before. very different, but cool.

Great tie. The royal is my #1 go to fly when fishing for brook trout.

Hey Davie, nice one mate. This is a lake fly right? Is it fished on a sinking line or greased in the film?
