No doubt you have figured it out by now, but those holes on the front top piece are not for the antenna but for the face detection proximity sensor.
When you have the phone up to your face the screen turns off because your face blocks the light being received by those 3 sensors. So not poking out the holes would have caused all kinds of problems for you making calls I'm sure.
