LoL @2.02 I have Skullcandys on and that bee/wasp or fly flew round my head :D ,as for the beans I live in the east and going to plant winter beans this friday . and hope for an early harvest
Good video, one tip if you want the roots to grow out quicker than you should loosen the roots a little before you put it in the ground. Then the plant won't think that she is still in the ground.
@alsmed If I'm feeling energetic I'll dig a trench and fill it was veg peelings and the like. If I'm not I'll work a bit of manure in over the winter. Good old manure, it does wonders.
@ILuvCaroline The same still applies wherever you live, just the months are different for planting. Make sure you don't put your beans outside until all frost has gone in your area.
@Normanskie The "Just a Few" is slug pellets. I had to watch the film again to find out. I put slug pellets around them to stop the slugs having a midnight feast.
Way too many slug pellets unless you have a very bag mollusc problem?
I don't know if your are metaldehyde based but did you know that metaldehyde is appearing in drinking water supplies now? There is chatter to change our ways in using it. The alt is to have it withdrawn from our use.
@DeconstructiveArt There are loads of slugs and snails up the allotment. I most probably do put down too many, but I'm not having the little smiley molluscs having a midnight feast on my account. They'll ruin a couple of months work in 1 night. I'm growing from my family and I. They can have the special blue food I put down for them. I use bio pellets now.
Runner beans adore my cool , foggy summers. I also grow the purple podded snap beans as they seem to tolerate the cold better. I have had good success with "provider" bush beans. I am growing the dwarf runner bean "pickwick" this year to see what its like.:) Another great video , Claire :)
@Kevinleea1965 If we have a hot summer (yeah like that's ever going to happen again). They suggest you spray your beans with a hose on fine spray. This "sets" the flowers, so the beans will grow. If they get too hot the flowers fall off and the beans won't be produced. Sounds like yours have the perfect weather for this.
I send the comment too fast! I ment the 4th3rd of England..anyway...I wanted to say that your runner beans looked awsome! ;) oh and I broke my crooked glases today =(
@clairesallotment Hey a question? No body left me a responde in my vid....have you tried drying runner beans? I wonder if they're good as baked beans?
Baked Beans are Haricot beans with a sauce that makes me very windy. I love them though. If you want to make them a bit more powerful add a teaspoon of curry paste to them. The heat you require is up to you.
Make sure they go out after the last frost. Frost will kill them. I find they work better if you start them off inside first. If you plant the seeds straight outside they tend to get nibbled by slugs just as they pop through the soil. They need a fair amount of water in the summer if the weather is dry.
this is my favourite out of all your videos Claire. out of all the different types of vegetables, beans are my favourite to grow but i'm not a bean fan so i don't much like eating them. sounds silly doesn't it :)
I usually use paper pots to start off my runner beans, but last season I tried out rootrainers which I bought from B&Q (buy one get on free). I found that I had better results by using them.
A friend of mine uses paper pots. The root trainers that you can buy are great, but the amount I'd need would cost be a fortune. Loo rolls and kitchen towel rolls are great for me.
@neild1 Planting sweet corn is video 22. If you live in Newcastle you can plant it. Just make sure that you adjust the planting out time so it's after the last frost date for your area.
With lettuces next time try getting a packed of mixed leaves, sow about 2 pinches worth and then when they are ready just pick the leaves that you need. That way you get a very colourful salad. I've never pinched the tops out of my peas, but if you pinch out the growing tip on other plants they tend to bush out.
hey im growing about 100 beans in the patch now. i started as seed. they r starting some flowers now and are getting realy tall. i put about 5-6 peppers infront of them and some tomato plants infront of them. got loads of pepper plants.
Thank you for this. I was going to put my runners in the ground tomorrow. Thanks to this vid i now know it is too early and they are still too small. Could you give me any advise concerning protection from bugs or insects etc, if required? Thank you.
Frost will kill them, so find out when your area has it's last frost date, this can usually be found on the internet. Runner beans only seem to attract green and black fly. When they appear get a spray bottle with a bit of washing up liquid and water in and spray. The bugs will slip off and die, and be very clean at the same time. This way is cheap and environmentally friendly.
Started all from seed. If you are starting in the greenhouse, plant mid to late April. If planting seeds straight outside leave until mid to late May. This year I'll being doing both to see which works best.
Hello. Having just put in my first early pots into a 1m2 raised bed I'm planning to put runner beans in to follow once the pots have been harvested. Is this a mad idea?
Not at all. When I was short of space one year I did potatoes with runner beans either side and they worked beautifully. Last year when the 1st earlies had finished I then put in cougettes. Why waste perfectly good space.
Thanks for the reply. I'll give that a go then. A friend of mine said they used to grow salad crops amongst their pots before they really got going. My first sowing of lettuce has germinated already so maybe i'll try to squeeze in a third crop!
i find if you plant beans direct(not in pots) in may they grow much better than transplanted ones, put a handfull of horn shavings in the hole with the beans and top up with water ,scatter a few slug pellets to avoid dissapointment
Next year I'll try that with a few to compare, also I'll grow in old loo rolls, then there will be no disturbance of roots, and the cardboard will biodegrade. Thanks for the advise. Enjoy harvesting. Claire
Flowers have just started coming on the beans, so beans will appear soon. If they are being attacked by black fly, sprat with diluted washing up liquid. They slip off the leaves, any you give the plants a wash at the same time.

whenever you plant out its a good idea to chuck a couple of handfulls of compost in the hole before planting. it gives them a really good start.
