Super 8 is the new 16mm. I've seen plenty of examples where you can barely tell the difference between the two.
Quite frankly, I am singularly unimpressed with HD. It looks way too artificial. I need film grain in my image--and I don't mean fake grain, I mean the real stuff.
As for this, I can see what you mean by the compression. I bet this must look divine projected :)
