Ever since I was a student (in the '90's) I've watched this video. I've still never seen another dancer do manege with grand jete battu en tournent en dehors! Schaufuss was such an amazing innovator! Also, nobody else at that time was doing double cabrioles that big. A truly masterful performer, and WAY ahead of his time.
@JeremyNasmith I realise that this comment comes 10 months after your's, however are you sure that he is doing grand jete en tournant? If you stop/start the film, he appears to take off and land on his left leg - which would be a fouette battu. This is merely a technical question, for to perform either step with clarity is a rare achievement.
@rosandtwo It's not quite as complicated as that. For all the jumps in the manege except the last, it begins as if you're going into a coupe jete, pushing off the left leg, right leg 4th front, then a opening to arabesque before landing on the right. The last jump is as if you were going for a saut de basque in a manege, which is essentially what it is. Push off on right leg, except he again opens into arabesque to land, landing on the left leg. The last jump you see a lot, the other, not so much
@pediatrapaola as incredible as his dancing is in this video, it must be difficult to watch a live performance of him and remember to breath at the same time! The phrase "born to dance" comes to mind.
i know this mans daughter and he came in too watch my ballet class one day i had no idea who he was then looked him up and was like HOLY CRAP i just had that man watching me.
There is video of shrauffus when he was younger out there, I dont know what hes dancing but he is 13 or 14, you can see that he would become brilliant. I love his confidence and technique . He was ahead of his time and I think he is as good or better than misha. By the way ice skaters "spin" He pirouites.
dude, you guys are all missing the point, this dude was an innovator. just like Baryshnikov, he was doing crazy stuff thats all in our rep now. we all have to turn like that, and he also shows how important flexibility and fluidity have become since he was dancing. Schaufuss was awesome, cant deny that.
You don't pwn at anything u n00b. get a life, man. You diss people infront of the screen but you don't have the balls to say it face to face, krowicki.
ahhh, I'm dizzy, why can't the camera guy EVER keep the camera still? I want to see the dancing. Sometimes I think that someone who doesn't know much about the camera would make a better video than a professional who wants to put his "personal touch" into it...
@ilyaballet ilya why do you dislike completaly peter,l saw mani time him at his best since 79 to 83 in london where he used to guest with lfb now enb he was really a terrific virtuoso ,one of the stronger of his time, and not only,
@ilyaballet not a very smart comment - my comment. As a kid I was always amazed by his art.. Baryshnikov and Schaufuss - they are n.1 when I was a student!
@ilyaballet what do you mean? Don't you like his pirouettes? I think he got amazing pirouettes, and very good jumps :) He was my teacher for a while actually :)
mmmm....tough question.I'd maybe choose spinning as I like it very much, but a man without also jumps and beats is useless....so who knows!I'd work on both things.
At the starting of the variation he does: step step double-cabriole,step step grand pas de chat....can be named also grand jeté but in this case it'd be wrong,as he does the jump with developpé...instead grand jeté is when you jump without developpé,with straight legs.
Peter Schaufuss is my favorite dancer of all time!
