@tokenfrenchman he's right. the execution is great, but the musical content consists of atonal tech riffing with a few exceptions, which is the reason this never gets very far beyond kinda tight, but i guess that's just like... my opinion man.

@metalassdave The fundamental fallacy which underpins your comment is that you imply that the basis of all music is harmony, when in reality it is rhythm. Atonality is fine by my book as long as it's done with a sense of purpouse- as it clearly is in this case. The Faceless epitomise the current (artistically stagnant) paradigm of ultra polished, sterile death metal, that while competent, doesn't have the same complexity and depth as the music of Abhorrent.

@tokenfrenchman i didn't mean to imply that one is more important than the other, rather that this composition seems to fundamentally lack harmonic structure. don't get me wrong, i enjoy chaotic riffing, but i feel like the faceless do a lot more with their music than merely throw together a myriad of technical riffs. they are overproduced, yes, but they opt to maintain mainstream appeal, all the while taking an at least slightly creative approach to composition, which is meritorious in itself.

Although I personally fail to see how a bunch of dumb staccato riffs and wanky, gratuitous solos topped off with some nonsense about aliens surpasses the complex interweaving of rhythms, mature lyrical content and the contrast of tonal and atonal melodies (yes, there are a few tonal ideas present here) that Abhorrent bring to the table.
