Nicely done video AND model...I have this kit and know what to expect now. Have you tried the HobbyBoss P-40E? Nice kit but be warned, windows aft of canopy should probably be cut off and glued on separately, they tend to 'fan' or spread out when you slide the canopy on. Thanks again.
@OLDSMARKARL I haven't built the HobbyBoss kit, but thanks for the warning.. HobbyBoss kits are kits that are designed to be assembled quickly and sold prepainted and ready made.. but somebody thought it was a good idea to sell the kits directly to modellers, as the 'easy range'.. :) That's why there's oversized canopies and simplified cockpits et.c.. :)
Great build thank you . Enjoying all your builds and very useful both for futiure buying and ease of build and in most cases pitfalls of the kit . Thanks again
@notjustadog Well, I used no particular ref for the wheel wells, but I think the pictures on the box showed a colour very similar to yellow zinc chromate, so that's probably why I did it.. I tend not to go by museum aircraft as they quite often have been restored to a colour that looks good, but not neccesarily correct.. I have also read that in the case of the P-47 Thunderbolt, it depended on where they were manufactured, what colour they had for some interior parts.. It's a jungle out there!!
i just realized something, you do skill level 2 moddelling ussaly which is basic, so its not advanced modelling...not ezy modelling but basicmodelling......................
@kf103 The clue, my friend, is in my channel name.. :) But I bought the Revell 1/72 Lancaster kit when on holiday, and I believe that is a level 5.. :) Personally I don't believe in the way Revell do their skill levels, as a kit with few parts can be more difficult to get to look good, than a kit with many bits in it.. it all depends.. :)
@tenka45623 Like I said I nearly bought a new one today as I plan to use a lot more of it in the future.. but I walked out with a lot of resin*, some etched brass**, a 1/72 A-10 A, a Russian armoured vehicle and 2 P-47 Thunderbolts.. plus a pot of Humbrol Barley Grey.. so the Tamiya pot went back in the rack it came from.. :)
* = mainly Tornado, F-14 & A-10 / F-16 seats ** = cockpit interior for the A-10 kit
@tenka45623 Sorry, my brain is mush today!! I nearly bought a brand new bottle of the stuff today as well, but a look at the old one reveals the following:
XF-4 (Yellow Green) Hope this helps you.. Sorry! :)
@tenka45623 Oh, I see.. Well, I have never really used the Tamiya range, more than some of their acrylics, which is very good.. so I can't help you.. I have no clue what the XF stands for.. :) Sorry...
Looks like a very nice kit..as almost all Academy kits. I have to get building the Hasegawa Intruder..or i will not get it done in time for the competition :/
@tenka45623 It's the Tamiya acrylic 'chromate yellow'.. If you mix a little light green with the Revell 16 you'll probably get a similar shade, but go careful.. :)
@tenka45623 I haven't had much time for modelling lately.. Hope I'll be getting my Marauder done in the week though, had hoped to have it done by today.. :)
@PivotAnimator2597 I assume you mean 1/76 or 1/72.. You will have trouble finding anything in 1/75!! :) Personally I like 1/72 scale kiots. but 1/35 are larger and you can detail them more... If you have limited space, then buy 1/72! But if you like larger kist and have space to store them, then build 1/35.. I can't really advice you, it's a very individual thing.. :)
@trainfart Yes, I made a few of the photos lighter, but not all.. :) Was in a bit of a rush.. :) Glad you liked it though.. Currently building a B-26 Marauder (Airfix) in 1/72 scale..
MY KITTY!! What a marvellous tribute! :D Yes, I agree that DAF cammo is one of the most eye-catching colour schemes; That´s one of the reasons why I find modern jets so boring, with that ("dead") grey paint... As for decals, I just cannot understand how, after all these years, Academy hasn´t improved the quality of their decals yet, so delicate and with such a bad fix.
@AlanMartinNala Ah, but Sir is wrong!! Academy HAS improved the decals on their latest kits, such as the IL-2, as they now have them printed by Techmod.. :) But yes, the earlier kit decals are still as bad as ever.. :P Still, Klear on it's own works well, and with a drop of MicroSol it works even better! I'm pleased you enjoyed the finished result as much as I enjoyed building it.. :)
@raythedodger One day I'd like to build a 1/48 Kittyhawk as well.. some planes appeal to me in 1/48 as well as 1/72, mainly because they still aren't overly big, even in that scale.. :) I have the Monogram 'Shooting Star' in 1/48.. amongst others! Quite like the Monogram kits, they offer some extra touches like open gunbays and such.. :)
@BasicModelling I am particularly partial to Monogram. I still seek those kits out at shows. Growing up, monogram seemed liked the greatest kits. Tons of fun detail and pilot figures. Even now, they hold their own against the wonder kits coming from the far east. I guess you feel the same away about Airfix. :)
@raythedodger Airfix, Matchbox (original) and Heller all have a special place for me.. and for lack of Matchbox originals, the Revell re-boxings are a very good substitute! They're finally re-issuing the old Matchbox Gloster Gladiator in the Revell guise later this year!! Can't wait.. :)
@BasicModelling There is a place where I live that has tons of old Matchbox kits complete, just without the boxes. They are on a clearance rack for 2 or 3 dollars a piece. They all have amazing fit and ease of building.
@MisplacedTexan4 Humbrol 29 for the 'Dark Earth', but I can't remember the number for the 'Mid Stone' shade.. :0) The RAF desert camo is one of my favourites to paint.. :)
@robertpina99 It's one of those planes that like most other US WWII fighters ended up in the shadow of the P-47 and P-51.. Yet when looked at properly you'll find that they served very well, and have a very good wartime record! I haven't yet seen one fly 'in the flesh', but I sure hope to.. There's a few about still! :)
@EmCSpiteri1 ..and nothing annoys me more than when the planes are cancelled at the local Air Show, due to bad weather.. Bad weather didn't stop them flying 70 odd years ago, so why now?? :)
@EmCSpiteri1 That is true.. and as you're a bit of an old relic yourself these days I guess you don't go out when it rains either.. :) :) Ha ha ha.. No, I rather they stayed grounded than to risk flying in bad conditions.. it's just not worth it!! Just a shame I've missed the BoB Memorial Flight 2 years running, for reason of bad weather though.. :P
You are right, I don't even go out to pick up the News Paper if I can help it. Am not a relic I have toy know you used the wrong word, it should be a "bit of a wreck" ☺☺
@supergodzillaman2 It used to be mine, for a long time.. but whereas it still is hih on the list of favs, planes like the P-47 Aand Hurricane now claim the top positions.. :) But yes, it IS a beautiful plane for sure.. :)
@syszone TWO years?? Don't think I've ever taken THAT long over a model.. Mind you, a couple of the started projects are getting close to a couple of years in progress, I guess.. :)
@kf103 Ha ha ha.. I used to have a nice desert backdrop, but since I started using the big paper sheet for a background I no longer have specific backdrops.. which in a way I miss, because it made the photos more interesting.. :)
@yesitsvish Thank you.. The break cables a re prominent on the P-40 landing gears, so I thought I'd show a good way of making some! The stripped wire from inside an electric cable also works well, but will need painting! :)
@petrwarry72 I think the Warhawk is the universal US name for ALL the P-40's, whereas the RAF called the early types 'Tomahawk', and the later versions 'Kittyhawk'.. which makes this a Kittyhawk! :)
I have 2 thoughts. When I decal,I do have a gloss coat on the kit before adding the decals. I also add a few drops of white glue (water soluable) to the decal water. I have never had a silvering problem.
Also, when you have a single piece lower wing, and seperate uppers, have you tried attaching the uppers to the fuselage first, eliminating any gap?
@Blargaldalien I forgot to mention it in the video, but I did a coat all over of Johnsons Klear and left it for 24 hours to cure, before I did the decalling.. Some 'early' Academy decals are notoriously difficult to settle, but the Klear / Mircosol combi worked for me.. :) Never heard of adding glue to the decal water, ever.. but will check at the club on Monday, if it is a common method.. :)
I haven't yet glued the top wings on to a model before the lower wing halves, but I know about the method, and when needed I will sure use it.. It makes sense, after all:)
@BasicModelling I do not think it is common, But I had seen in mentioned online, and I trie it. I am thinking some of the Academy decals are thick / stiff, and hard to snuggle down. I do use Micro Sol and/ or Microset.
Yet another tidy build there, Rob and nice cockpit detail too! I'm adapting some resin bits that were aimed at the Academy P-47 for the Revell kit and so far so good. I have the gunbays enroute and I really hope they will fit as I've already cut the panels out of the wings! Hey-ho, if not, it'll be a grand excercise in scratch-building! Although the Eduard PE cockpit was a tester. A control lever in 1/72 PE is borderline
@MakingModelsAgain Well, lets just say that the resin gunbays for the Academy kit doesn't even fit THAT kit.. :) Not without a lot of sanding and thinning of the resin parts.. I know because as a long term project I'm building a P-47 D Razorback (of Boxted fame) and it will have the resin cockpit, gunbays and a few other little bits.. :)
@spaceman300 Thank you.. the break wire actually shows on the finished model, so it was worth adding.. :) I just miss not being able to anything with the engine, as there is none.. :)
@GerbilEssences I haven't looked in to the Squadron in particular, I just wanted a classic RAF type P-40 in a desert camo.. and now I have one! I will build a P-40 E in Russian markings, and a 2-seater P-40 N, but other than that I will not build any more.. unless I get round to building the Airfix kit at some point, for pure nostalgic reasons.. :)
@BasicModelling Well that sounds like more than enough. By all accounts I heard the Airfix P-40 wan't even a specific mk. (i.e. B/C/E/F/...), not a great kit... or a modern one.
@GerbilEssences I think it is an 'E'.. but not sure.. either way I have built about 10 of the Airfix P-40 back in the day.. it used to be my very favourite.. :) But that was some 40 odd years ago..
@GerbilEssences The prop spun very nicely, but for some reason I reversed it, and after that it didn't spin as well.. :P I could have limited the filler with masking tape, but masking tape has shot up in price, so I have to go careful.. :)
@bttfspencer Thank you.. I had fun building this one, as always!! Apart from the unexpected amount of filler needed.. :( But it goes to show even modern kits have problems.. :) Looking forward to see any models of yours.. :)
Where would I find filler and is it called something else to beside filler?

@spaceman300 Thank you.. the break wire actually shows on the finished model, so it was worth adding.. :) I just miss not being able to anything with the engine, as there is none.. :)

it's really good, as usual, but why did the kit maker not allow for the Flying Tiger insignia? Unless of course this is a Chinese kit :)
granskare 1 year ago
@granskare The Flying Tiger insignia comes with the P-40 E kit.. so they DO have a FT version as well! Just not with THIS kit.. :)

I liked it:) Thanks!

@atomicdog32 Thank you.. I have always had a liking for the P-40 with a sharp shark mouth.. Need to build a US and a Russian version too.. :)

@joluqa Thank you.. :) :)

I like how they painted a mouth on the plane.
Jabbajawz4life 1 year ago
@Jabbajawz4life They actually got the idea with the Sharkmouth from the German Luftwaffe, believe it or not.. :)

Nice finish, I think Billy Drake led that squadron.
By the way I still have sheets of different P-40 decals I won't be using. US, AVG, RAF, Soviet etc.
GerbilEssences 1 year ago
@GerbilEssences I haven't looked in to the Squadron in particular, I just wanted a classic RAF type P-40 in a desert camo.. and now I have one! I will build a P-40 E in Russian markings, and a 2-seater P-40 N, but other than that I will not build any more.. unless I get round to building the Airfix kit at some point, for pure nostalgic reasons.. :)
BasicModelling 1 year ago
@BasicModelling Well that sounds like more than enough. By all accounts I heard the Airfix P-40 wan't even a specific mk. (i.e. B/C/E/F/...), not a great kit... or a modern one.
GerbilEssences 1 year ago
@GerbilEssences I think it is an 'E'.. but not sure.. either way I have built about 10 of the Airfix P-40 back in the day.. it used to be my very favourite.. :) But that was some 40 odd years ago..

@BasicModelling My only 'complete' plane of my youth was the academy zero, and it was only painted after completion :(
SmiertSpionem 1 year ago
@SmiertSpionem Ah yes, the Academy Zero.. I built it ages ago, and binned it a while ago.. :)
BasicModelling 1 year ago
@BasicModelling Made a total fudge of the landing gear, one up one down. I will bin it soon!

I had forgotten about that cosford footage ;) My dad must have filmed it.
Ah, the longer fuse is more elegant. Seems like everyone flew this plane, even the free french (with a nice stork logo).
That was a lot of filler!
TO make sure the prop spins, don't get ANY paint on the surfaces that will be touching, also some graphite powder should get things moving ;)
GerbilEssences 1 year ago
@GerbilEssences The prop spun very nicely, but for some reason I reversed it, and after that it didn't spin as well.. :P I could have limited the filler with masking tape, but masking tape has shot up in price, so I have to go careful.. :)
BasicModelling 1 year ago
@BasicModelling Even wilko masking tape :)
GerbilEssences 1 year ago
@GerbilEssences I'm not sure.. won't use anything but Tamiya, and even that's not perfect.. :P

I suppose it's the only choice for fine detail, expensive it is too!

@SmiertSpionem Nearly £5 now.. SIGH! :p

Your work is truly inspiring! I can't wait to bust out one of my Aircraft kits now. :)
Thankyou

bttfspencer 1 year ago
@bttfspencer Thank you.. I had fun building this one, as always!! Apart from the unexpected amount of filler needed.. :( But it goes to show even modern kits have problems.. :) Looking forward to see any models of yours.. :)
BasicModelling 1 year ago
@BasicModelling
I will be sure to make more model videos, as I complete them. :)
Filler is a real pain, but the results are worth it.

@bttfspencer Most of the time, yes.. :) :)
