  • Its a shame that most of Gary's historical buildings and area now look shitty as hell.. But Gary could once be a beautiful and prosperous city as it once was, once they get non-shitty ass mayors (cough cough Rudy Clay cough cough) because he really fucked things up. Crooked ass politician...

  • i remember gary and uss. it looks like a warzone now. great tibean chant.

I think ill go back and see where i was once upon a time. mec

  • This is what happens when republican racists take over and inequality rules.

  • I cry for my city. I cry for my grandfather, Lesili I Combs who came to Gary in 1906 and was instrumental in building many of the fine buildings of the day. I cry for my father who followed in his father's foot steps. I cry for my uncle who followed in his uncles footsteps. Don't ever tell me that the blacks were not responsible for the tragic downfall of the greatest city of the century. Their leader, Mayor Richard Hatcher lead my city to the state in which it is today.

  • @combsrobert Why did it get like this? :) I never knew about this till now and you sound like a person who could explain it well by me reading the ancestory of what you just said. Please tell me the real story? :)

  • Sad. That's all I can say. Once a beautiful, thriving city with the best schools in Indiana. Gary was a wonderful place to grow up in the 1950's. Don't blame the economy... don't blame the government.... don't blame the good people who lived there...and many still do. Blame those who ruin everything for the rest of us, law abiding citizens.

  • This is what happens when Liberal Democrats get their hands on anything.

  • Not really. This happened as a result of the collapse of the US Steel market starting in the 1960's

  • @northvilletunnels i lived there in the 1960,s stayed at the boulevard hotel on broadway anyone got info or pics of that time period any help i would appreciate.

  • @northvilletunnels And what caused that collapse? Not George Bush, not the "far right," not Sarah Palin's down syndrome baby. It was the unions supported by leftist labor laws. Mission accomplished.

  • @northvilletunnels That's what my mom said, well she said it was big in cars and all this stuff then it just collapsed.

  • @JMMoosey ur an idiot

  • @JMMoosey you just got roasted by Northvilletunnels, haha, just saying.

  • @JMMoosey

It doesn't matter now how it happened. Unbelievely sad

    The death of a friend

The city of Gary isn't coming back

  • This video reminds me of the "Life After People" series. Most of these buildings have been abandoned for more than 30 years. Some of the neighborhoods with single family homes still look pretty good.

  • @mgflorida yea thats where they shot it. my dude lives right there off of broadway and 6th

  • The part of the story that is never told about is the racism that was involved in the destruction of Gary. When Richard Hatcher was elected mayor of the city back in 1968, white flight took place. Homeowners as well as business owners moved out of the city drastically reducing the tax base of the once great city. Without the previous commerce, poverty and ruin put the city in a bad situation and the present conditions are the end result.

  • Yes your correct , I grew up right next door to ya " East Chicago " and racism was involved in the destruction of Gary but it was reverse racisim on the new Mayors part. When Richard Hatcher was elected mayor of the city back in 1968 I was only 8 years old but I do remember the grown up's saying that he publicly stated that he had no intention of cowering and knuckling under to Gary's old political white guard. So the crackers said fine , we're outta here , they took their money and left.

  • Thus leaving a predominately Black city with a Black Mayor to fend for itself at an economically bad time , and during a time period when most state governments didn't really give a damb about black people anyhow.

  • Depressing, and now you have a recession...........it will all be put of till a later date!!!

  • Gary was one of the first steel producing communities to fail. Most of the places in this video have been abandoned for more then 35 years. It was a sign of things to come. Its to bad nobody took notice.

  • Yeah, thanks tunnels. Our local newspaper ran an article on Gary about 10 or so years ago, (when Gary had the highest murder rate)the article also mentioned what a great city it was in the 20's and 30's (I think!) so it has always held a fascination for me.

Is their any industry left there?

Is Gary as bad as it was 10 years ago?

  • They are trying to redevelop parts of it. The city is broke. I first went there in 2004 and I was surprised at the lake of people. I guess its not as bad as it was. I have never had any problems ever being there. There is very little industry there.

  • @workthemeat gary has good neigborhoods and it has bad neighborhoods. but the good neigborhoods are hardly ideal.

  • wow this is really amazing... just think, so many suburbs will look like this in 50 years

  • I don't think it will take nearly that long.

  • The death of U.S Steel was the death of many a steel tahn like homestead, mckeesport and Duquesne PA lets keep buying cheap crap from mexico china ca nA Da and this is what all of America is going to look like

  • Cool vid. Thanks for the response!

  • I was born in gary and remember how well it was kept up in the 50`s but now they dont do anything there its so sad as gary at one time was so beautifull and a model city but now looks like the aftermath of an atomic war.I enjoyed your movie, thanks,Norman.
