Thanks man !!!! I'm a lifelong ,over the top Beach boys, Jan & Dean fan. And I've never heard this version. I've seen the beach boys in concert more times then I can count. And I was blessed with seeing J & D in concert @ Valley Forge,PA in 1980 and again @ Ameristar Casino in KC, MO in 1999. I met Jan after the show & shook his hand. That was the highlight of my concert going history.
I have heard this version many years ago. I always assumed that it was the Beach Boys playing and singing. Sounds like Dennis' drum style of that era (remember, he played drums for the entire first album as well as 50 percent or more of the next few albums. Sound like Carl's guitar and background singing. I don't hear Mike, though, but he could be in there. David Marks was in the band at this time, too. Al Jardine may have been involved, possible bass playing and vocals.
As a lifelong fan of both the Beach Boys and J&D, I would concur that this is Brian Wilson and not Dean on vocals. To say that this version kills later J&D versions is a little strong, though. J&D's final production, "The New Girl in School" is a great piece of work, especially considering they had to rewrite it from two previous versions "Gonna Hustle You" and "Get a Chance With You." Remember, too, that Brian's first taste of studio production came from Jan Berry. He was a good student!
@Whipple236 How true! Brian would also go over to work with Jan and Dean, not only handing them songs (and hits - surprised Mike Love hasn't sued everyone ever involved with that!), but adding his falsetto to many of their recordings.
What does "hustle" mean here? Thanks

Yeah, this is definitely early period Wilson falsetto. Dean's sounded... thinner, whilst Wilson's was far fuller bodied and higher pitched.

Dean started his shows in the mid 2000s with this tune (as "New Girl in School")

Nice song, but Jan & Dean's version of The New Girl In School is better.

I think Jan and Dean's version sounds so much better.

I hear Brian doing the lead vocal AND I also hear him in the background vocals. Overdubbing?
